Gift Will Support Scholarships For Nursing Students In Need

EVANSVILLE, IN (10/19/2021) The University of Evansville (UE) has been provided a $3.6 million gift from the John B. and Lucille S. Kelly Trust. The funds will support and grow the Lucy Kelly Nursing Scholarship, which assists Dunigan Family School of Nursing students who demonstrate financial need and strong academic abilities.

After her marriage to Dr. John B. Kelly, Lucy relocated from St. Louis to Evansville. At age 42 she decided to enroll at UE for a nursing degree. In 1970, she graduated at 46. Looking back on her time at the University, she considered her four years of studies some of the most fulfilling and happiest of her life. Lucy worked as a nurse at Welborn Baptist Hospital for many years, while her husband was a urologist for Welborn Clinic. She eventually moved to a retirement community in Sun City, Arizona, where she lived until her passing at the age of 97.

“We are tremendously grateful for the Kellys’ generosity and foresight in developing a philanthropic plan that will both make the UE Nursing degree more accessible to students and expand the pipeline of professionals in this critical need field,” said Abigail Werling, vice president for university advancement at UE. “Mrs. Kelly was very proud of her UE degree, and today, we are proud of the Kellys’ decision to invest in the University of Evansville’s future with such a beautiful gift of scholarship.”

Concerned about the nursing shortage and accessibility to education, Lucy established the Lucy Kelly Nursing Scholarship at UE. It was her hope that students in need could pursue their passion for nursing and join the field after graduation. Applicants for the scholarship must be in the top twenty percent of their class and hold a B grade average.

UE was the first institution in the state of Indiana to receive accreditation for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Now celebrating over 60 years of continuous accreditation, the program offers a scientific and creative learning environment in which students work closely with talented, experienced faculty. UE offers direct entry into the program for eligible freshmen, meaning those who meet required standards are guaranteed a spot in the program once they deposit. Direct entry students also receive a nursing scholarship valued at $20,000 per year.

“Nursing careers, especially in the tri-state region, are currently in high demand,” said Jerrilee Lamar, PhD, RN, CNE, the Dunigan Family School of Nursing chair. “We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift from the John B. and Lucille S. Kelly Trust, which will support nursing students for years to come.”

Students interested in pursuing a nursing degree can apply for free at evansville.edu/apply.

McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries To Host Two Exhibitions

The McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries is excited to present two exhibitions to complete the Fall Semester, -RHIZA, an installation of experimental works by alumna Katherine Watts, and the 2021 Senior Seminar Exhibition.

Katherine Watts ’07 is an alumna of USI who recently received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Louisville. -RHIZA, a collection of artworks that focuses on an immersive experience of local ecology as well as the dichotomous relationship of humanity and nature, is presented through the eyes of the artist, eco-philosophy, eco-feminism, mycology and metaphor.

At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 21, Watts will give an artist talk about her work and the exhibition. The lecture will be held in the USI Performance Center, adjacent to University Center East.

2021 Senior Seminar Exhibition

The 2021 Senior Seminar Exhibition features the creative work of 10 studio art, graphic design, interactive media, and illustration students. The senior art and design seminars are capstone courses for Art and Art Education majors and combine discussion of current aesthetics issues in the visual arts with practical knowledge in career or graduate school preparation. The capstone courses are also an evaluation of the student’s artistic growth and potential. This group exhibit is the culmination of these courses and a high point in the art majors’ careers at USI.

Participants in the show include senior students Laisha Diaz De Leon, Kassiti Fink, Jade Hatcher, Ally Hinton, Mitchell Marcrum, Jerrith Morrison, Kelsey Parker, Faith Spahr-Munoz, Elizabeth Vanada and Joely Will.

The exhibition will be displayed from October 18 through December 10. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. The McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries is located in the lower level of the Liberal Arts Center. For more details, visit the gallery website.

Face coverings are required while in the gallery and all campus buildings. The physical distancing of three feet or more is also expected at all times. If you plan to bring a group of 10 or more people to the exhibition, consider contacting the gallery in advance.

In coming on board with the “On the Road” dinner, Ivy Tech Chancellor Daniela Vidal sees the event as an opportunity to begin to re-imagine what the Hospitality and Culinary programs at Ivy Tech could and should be, and to demonstrate the school’s ongoing commitment to the culinary community in Evansville and the surrounding communities in Southwest Indiana.

Chancellor Vidal will provide a brief overview of the school’s plans for delivering education, training, and support services to the culinary industry which has been forced to change drastically due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting changes in consumer behavior.

“We are thrilled with the timing of this event as it coincides quite well with our current planning activities for delivering our customized education, training and service products to the culinary community,” Vidal said.  “Re-imagining the programs is important for our community and I am looking forward to sharing an ‘appetizer’ of our plans at next Tuesday’s dinner.”

Culinary Crossroads spokesman Larry Dickerson, said “Having Ivy Tech involved in our initial dinner and ongoing activities in Evansville and the surrounding area of Southwest Indiana will provide a tremendous foundation for success.  We look forward to the ongoing collaborative efforts with Ivy Tech, chefs, restaurateurs, product and service providers, financial institutions, public officials and business owners, all of which have a vested interest in building and nurturing a vibrant culinary community.

Vincennes University Theatre Arts Program Is welcoming Back Live Audiences With “Clue: The Musical”

0
VINCENNES, Ind., October 20, 2021 – Seeing the light reflect off of someone’s glasses, hearing a gasp of air leave someone’s breath, always aware the audience is there but never seeing them fully, as the light blinds your view of them.
When performing on a stage, the nerves are certainly real. Trying to memorize the script and perform on stage can be stressful. According to Vincennes University Theater Arts major Styx Adams, it is all worth it.
“I have stage fright, and it can all be stressful at times, but it is completely worth it when you see the audience’s expressions or hear their laughter,” says Adams, who is from Gleeson, Indiana. “Knowing that you are bringing out these emotions in people, whether it’s anger, joy, sadness, or shock, it’s why I do theater. I’m always wanting to make someone’s day better.”
Productions were virtual last academic year. Actors and actresses didn’t perform in front of a live audience. It took a creative toll on performers as the crowd’s energy is key to performing on stage.
The exciting news is live audiences are returning to VU’s student productions.
