Otters even series with home run derby win against Y’alls
The Evansville Otters pulled back into a first place tie with the Florence Y’alls Wednesday night, as the Otters broke a 1-1 tied game through ten innings by outslugging the Y’alls 6-1 in a home run derby.
Wednesday’s win for the Otters evens the midweek series one game apiece.
Otters’ right-hander Ryan O’Reilly and Y’alls southpaw Jonaiker Villalobos traded seven scoreless innings, opening the ballgame with an impressive pitcher’s duel.
The Otters scratched out the first tally of the ballgame in the top of the eighth.
Riley Krane drove Miles Gordon home from third on an infield single to the right side, before Harrison DiNicola ended the inning on the same play by cutting Andy DeJesus down at the plate.
The Y’alls answered right back in the bottom of the eighth, after Samson Abernathy replaced O’Reilly, whose final line would read 7.2 innings of one-run ball on four hits, seven strikeouts and three walks.
Abernathy entered with two men aboard and two out, when he was met by Trevor Craport who laced a ball to the left field corner bringing home the tying run.
The go-ahead run was racing around third, however, in the form of Chad Sedio; he was cut down on a picture perfect relay from left fielder Andrew Penner to cut-off man Andy DeJesus and catcher Justin Felix to end the inning and keep the ballgame tied.
Abernathy pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth after the Y’alls held Evansville at bay in the top half of the inning.
Joe Dougherty entered from the Y’alls’ bullpen to keep the Otters’ international tie-breaker runner from scoring in the top of inning number ten.
Logan Sawyer entered with the game on the line, opening the bottom of the tenth, with a runner in scoring position and nobody out. Sawyer struck out the first batter he faced, got the lead-off man in the order, Axel Johnson, to ground out to second, before the Otters’Â closer managed to get Luis Pintor swinging and send the ballgame to a home run derby finale.
As the third batter in the derby, Andretty Cordero opened the homer tally with five towering drives to left field, one even clearing the Y’alls scoreboard in left center. Cordero’s performance put the Otters up 5-0.
Though Connor Crane managed to club a homer for the Y’alls as their second batter (fourth overall), newly minted Otter Jose Pujols smashed one of his own to left, sending the derby to its final ledger, six bombs to one.
Evansville will look to take the series rubber match Thursday, July 15. Fans can follow along with an audio broadcast on the Evansville Otters YouTube channel, with first pitch scheduled for 5:34 p.m. CT.

CenterPoint Energy has proactively notified Woodland Park Apartments’ tenants in Evansville of possible disconnection.Â
The account associated with Woodland Park Apartments is significantly past due and has been for a sustained period. CenterPoint Energy has been in communication with the Woodland Park Apartments’ landlord and management since 2019, making multiple attempts to collect the past due amount. Auditor Klutz Announces $3.9 Billion State Reserve
State Cash Reserves Jump Despite Pandemic Challenges And Economic Downturn
STATEHOUSE – State Auditor Tera Klutz, CPA announced  that Indiana closed the 2021 fiscal year with reserves of $3.9 billion.
“Indiana once again exceeded expectations and soared through the recession with one of the fastest recoveries on record to end with a cash reserve of $3.9 billion at the end of June,†said Auditor Klutz. “Indiana is poised to make an excess reserve transfer of $1.1 billion, which will be split between retirement funding and a refundable income tax credit for Hoosier taxpayers.â€
The annual report, prepared by the State Budget Agency, highlights the state’s fiscal year ending on June 30, 2021.
Auditor Klutz credits strong fiscal leadership and teamwork for how Indiana was able to financially navigate through the national pandemic and economic uncertainty while ensuring a reasonable state reserve.
“Indiana’s economic future and fiscal responsibility are directly linked. Maintaining sustainable finances creates a better, stronger, more prosperous Hoosier state for the next generation,†added Auditor Klutz.
Cris Johnston, Office of Management and Budget Director, echoed Auditor Klutz’s statements and added “Years of fiscal discipline, sound tax policy, a resilient Indiana economy, and federal pandemic financial assistance are all reflected in these impressive year-end results which have presented the opportunity to make strategic investments which will benefit Hoosiers in the years to come.â€
“The official revenue forecast on April 15th added $463 million to our projections for FY 2021,†said Zac Jackson, State Budget Director. “In the last 75 days of the fiscal year, we exceeded those projections by an additional $1.222 billion. It’s unprecedented for the General Fund reserve balances to increase by nearly $1.7 billion in less than three months.â€

“Indiana continues to be a leader in fiscal responsibility and, with the recent upgrades to the Indiana Transparency Portal, a leader in financial transparency as well,†noted Auditor Klutz. In May, the Auditor updated the Indiana Transparency Portal with local government distribution data as part of the in-depth reports on the state’s revenues and expenditures.

ON PAYING FOR INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT:
“Everyone knows our roads and bridges and even broader infrastructure – throw in rural broadband – needs attention. For the two and a half years I’ve been here no one has been serious about the question that requires political will: how do you pay for it without gimmicks?â€
ON GOING ALONG WITH INFRASTRUCTURE DEAL WITHOUT HARD PAY-FORS WHEN DEMOCRATS PLAN FOR $3.5 TRILLION RECONCILIATION PACKAGE:
“To me, this is like paving the road to socialism. Even though you’re trying to talk about hard infrastructure, that is what worries me. We were $18 trillion in debt when I got here 2 years ago; we’re approaching $30 trillion now, and it gets shrugged off like nothing when you’re adding another $3.5 trillion. On top of the $1.9 trillion package the federal government passed earlier this year, that’s a lot of money to borrow.â€
