USI Volleyball begins post-season play Friday night

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball opens the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament Friday at 8:30 p.m. when it takes on the No. 3-seeded Rockhurst University Hawks at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.

The Screaming Eagles are the No. 6 seed after finishing the 2021 regular season with a 17-12 overall record and an 11-7 mark in GLVC play.

Friday’s contest is a rematch of USI’s five-set loss to Rockhurst last month in Kansas City, Missouri. USI won the first and fourth sets, 25-23 and 26-24, respectively, but Rockhurst earned a two-point win in the second frame before grabbing three-point wins in both the third and fifth sets to pull out the win.

Junior middle hitter Taylor Litteken (Foristell, Missouri, had 17 kills and five blocks to lead the Eagles, who enter this weekend’s tournament as the defending champion after capturing the 2020-21 GLVC Tournament title last spring in East Peoria. Senior outside hitter Averi Vomastic had 13 kills and 19 digs to pace Rockhurst, which finished the regular-season 20-10 overall and 13-5 in GLVC play.

If USI gets by Rockhurst in the opening round, the Eagles will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between No. 2-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis and No. 7-seeded University of Illinois Springfield Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The GLVC Championship match is Sunday at noon.

The Eagles, who are 6-5 against the GLVC Tournament field this year, went a combined 4-0 against Missouri-St. Louis and Illinois Springfield during the regular-season. Of USI’s five losses to teams in the GLVC Tournament field, three of the losses came in five sets while the other two losses were in four sets.

If the Eagles get to the NCAA II Tournament, they’ll likely have to do it via the league title and automatic qualifier as they slipped out of the latest NCAA II Midwest Region rankings. USI is looking to capture its fourth conference title since 2002 and back-to-back titles for the first time in program history.

Other first-round match-ups include top-seeded Lewis University taking on No. 8-seeded University of Indianapolis and No. 4-seeded Missouri University of Science & Technology playing No. 5-seeded Quincy University. The GLVC East Division saw four teams make it to the GLVC Tournament, while two teams from both the GLVC West and Central Divisions also qualified.

Three Hoosier Olympians, Michael Brinegar, Andrew Capobianco and Tomer Frankel, are on the roster for the 2021-22 campaign. Capobianco earned silver in the 3M Synchro Springboard.

Six swimmers with Indiana ties have been named to the 2021-22 U.S. National Team roster: Zach Apple, Blake Pieroni, Lilly King, Annie Lazor and current Hoosiers Michael Brinegar and Mariah Denigan.

USA Diving announced that IU freshman divers Carson Tyler and Quinn Henninger will represent Team USA at the upcoming 2021 Junior Pan American Championships, November 25-December 5 in Cali, Colombia. Tyler will compete in the Platform dive, while Henninger is set for the 3-Meter dive.

LAST TIME OUT: MEN SWEEP, WOMEN SPLIT IN IUSD’s WINNING WEEKEND

Indiana swimming and diving won four of five matchups after completing a two-day double dual meet October 29-30 at Ohio State. The No. 5 Hoosier men earned three wins over the weekend to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season. The No. 11 IU women’s swimming and diving squad split the weekend, beating No. 18 Virginia Tech, 225-128, but falling to the hosts, 190-163, to move to 4-1 on the season.

Brendan Burns dominated the weekend to earn the Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week award, contributing four wins and six total top three finishes to the men’s score. Four of his times were NCAA B cut qualifying times and all six of his times ranked top 10 in the nation and top five in the Big Ten. Burns won the 200 Backstroke and 200 Butterfly and was part of IU’s victorious 400 and 200 Medley Relay squads.

Freshman Carson Tyler swept the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dive competitions to earn Big Ten men’s Diver of the Week honors. In both events, Tyler earned NCAA Zone Qualifying scores and has collected qualifying marks in all four events he’s competed in this season. In the 3M, Tyler scored a 440.65 and in the 1M a 362.00.

50 GOP Senators File Challenge To Biden’s Vaccine Mandate For Businesses

0

WASHINGTON – The formal challenge against President Biden’s vaccine mandate under the Congressional Review Act will be filed by Republican Senators led by Senator Mike Braun (Ranking Member of the HELP Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and their 47 Senate Republican colleagues: Sen. Dan Sullivan, Sen. Bill Hagerty, Sen. Roger Marshall, Sen. Mike Lee, Sen. James Lankford, Sen. Rick Scott, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Cynthia Lummis, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. John Barrasso, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, Sen. John Thune, Sen. Jerry Moran, Sen. Roger Wicker, Sen. Richard Burr, Sen. Mike Rounds, Sen. John Hoeven, Sen. Pat Toomey, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, Sen. James Risch, Sen. Mike Crapo, Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Tom Cotton, Sen. Joni Ernst, Sen. Kevin Cramer, Sen. Josh Hawley, Sen. John Boozman, Sen. Jim Inhofe, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Todd Young, Sen. John Kennedy, Sen. Ron Johnson, Sen. Ben Sasse. Sen. Steve Daines, Sen. Deb Fischer, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Sen. Thom Tillis, Sen. John Cornyn, Sen. Tim Scott, Sen. Bill Cassidy, Sen. Roy Blunt, Sen. Richard Shelby, Sen. Rob Portman, Sen. Susan Collins, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and Sen. Mitt Romney.  Congressman Fred Keller (PA-12) (Ranking Member, Subcommittee on Workforce Protections) and other members in the U.S. House of Representatives introduced the same bill.

The Congressional Review Act is the official process for Congress to eliminate an executive branch rule. The resolution has been received by the Senate and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP).

This move to overturn President Biden’s vaccine or test mandate for private employers is guaranteed a vote on the Senate floor. The rule was transmitted to the Senate on November 16th, setting up a Floor vote as soon as early December.

“Today, Senate Republicans will formally challenge the overreach of federal power that is President Biden’s vaccine-or-test mandate for private businesses, and I urge the Senate to vote in favor of this disapproval resolution when it comes to the Floor for a filibuster-proof, simple-majority vote as soon as early December. Republicans are united against President Biden’s vaccine-or-test mandate for businesses, but this federal overreach is not a partisan issue, and the consequences of this mandate are affecting Americans in all 50 states.” - Senator Mike Braun.

Applications Now Open For Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship

0

Future Indiana Teachers Are Encouraged To Apply By Jan. 31

STATEHOUSE (Nov.16, 2021) – Vanderburgh County lawmakers encourage local students planning to pursue a career in education to apply for the state’s teaching scholarship.

State Rep. Tim O’Brien (R-Evansville) said applications are now being accepted for the 2022-2023 Next Generation Hoosier Educator Scholarship, which pays $7,500 per year for up to four years to students earning a teaching degree and who commit to teaching in Indiana for at least five years. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31.

“Investing in our teachers is integral to achieving the best education for our students,” O’Brien said. “Hoosiers with a passion for teaching should consider applying for this scholarship.”

The scholarship is available to 200 high-achieving high school and college students each year who either graduate in the top 20 percent of their class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. To continue earning the scholarship in college, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid each year, earn a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least 30 credit hours per year. Current college students who apply must be able to use the scholarship for at least two full academic years.

“Indiana must continue to recruit high-achieving students to pursue a career in teaching,” said State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville). “Scholarship recipients must commit to teaching in a Hoosier classroom for at least five years, which helps Indiana retain top-notch educators.”

In 2020, 439 students applied for the scholarship, with applications from 231 high schools in 84 counties. Nearly three-quarters of applicants were Indiana high school seniors with the remainder comprised of current college students.

“Hundreds of Hoosier students have benefited from this scholarship since its launch in 2017,” said State. Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka). “Past recipients are already making a positive impact on our state’s education system.”

Last year, Vanderburgh County’s recipients were Taylor Gerth, of Mater Dei High School, Grace Martin, of Reitz Memorial High School and Abigail Woebkenberg, of Central High School.
