Surviving the Holiday Blues: Dealing with Stress and Depression During the Festive Season

Johnny Kincaid December 1, 2024

The holidays are supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year.” Yet, for many people, they feel like anything but. Between juggling family commitments, shopping for gifts, managing finances, and dealing with the general hustle and bustle, the holidays can bring on a level of stress that rivals even the busiest workdays. For others, feelings of loneliness, grief, or seasonal depression can take center stage, making this time feel particularly isolating. If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone—and there’s hope.

Experts agree that while holiday stress and depression are common, there are ways to navigate this tricky time of year with more ease and emotional well-being.

This year, we have to take politics into consideration

Dave Bowersox, a pastor at The Hills Church in Evansville, says that differing beliefs can cause a lot of friction at family get-togethers. “I’m doing a lot of work with folks to just help bridge the gap between whether you disagree politically or even just with life choices.” Bowersox said, “Like, can we put those aside?”

According to Bowersox, some notable voices are suggesting that isolation is a good way to deal with these differences. “I’m really saddened by the conversation going on out there,” he said. “Respected professionals are saying, hey, it’s OK to just isolate this season. I don’t remember a time when I’ve seen somebody say it’s a good thing to isolate this year because you’re upset with somebody or you disagree with them.”

Understanding the Roots of Holiday Stress

Why are the holidays so stressful? Dr. Carla Manly, a clinical psychologist and author of Joy from Fear, says that much of the pressure stems from unrealistic expectations. “We often idealize the holidays,” she explains, “but life isn’t perfect, and neither are the holidays. When we expect everything to go smoothly—perfect meals, happy family gatherings, flawless gift exchanges—we set ourselves up for disappointment.”

The holidays also come with a significant financial burden. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), 62% of Americans report that money is a source of stress during this season. Whether it’s the pressure to buy expensive gifts, travel, or host parties, the financial toll can leave people feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

And then there’s the emotional side. For those who have lost loved ones, this time of year can be a painful reminder of who’s missing. Similarly, people who are estranged from family or living far from friends may feel especially lonely.

Recognizing Signs of Holiday Depression

While stress during the holidays is common, for some, it goes deeper. Depression can show up as persistent sadness, lack of energy, changes in appetite or sleep, and loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy. For those who already struggle with depression, the holidays may exacerbate these symptoms.

“Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is also something to be mindful of,” says Dr. Norman Rosenthal, the psychiatrist who first described SAD in the 1980s. “The shorter days and reduced sunlight in winter can trigger depressive symptoms in vulnerable individuals.”

Understanding that these feelings are valid—and that you’re not alone in experiencing them—can be the first step toward finding relief.

Practical Tips for Managing Holiday Stress

Set Realistic Expectations
Let go of the need for a Pinterest-perfect holiday. Focus on what really matters to you and your loved ones. “Ask yourself: What do I want to feel during the holidays?” advises Dr. Manly. “Once you identify that—whether it’s peace, joy, or connection—you can make decisions that align with those values.”

Create a Budget (and Stick to It)
Financial stress can be a major contributor to holiday blues. Set a spending limit and stick to it. Remember, meaningful gifts don’t have to be expensive. Sometimes, a heartfelt note or a handmade present can mean more than something bought from a store.

Prioritize Self-Care
It’s easy to neglect yourself when you’re busy with holiday obligations, but taking care of your physical and mental health is crucial. Try to get enough sleep, eat nourishing foods, and make time for exercise—even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block. “Exercise is a powerful mood booster,” says Dr. Rosenthal. “It helps combat stress and depression by releasing endorphins.”

Learn to Say No
You don’t have to attend every holiday party or participate in every Secret Santa exchange. Saying no to obligations that don’t serve your well-being is not only okay—it’s necessary.

Delegate Responsibilities
You don’t have to do it all. Ask family members to pitch in with cooking, decorating, or shopping. Sharing the workload can help ease your stress and make everyone feel more involved.

Navigating Emotional Challenges

Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s okay to feel sad, lonely, or overwhelmed during the holidays. Suppressing those emotions will only make them worse. Allow yourself to grieve if you’ve lost someone or feel disappointed if the season isn’t shaping up as you’d hoped.

Reach Out for Support
Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist can help you process your emotions. Sometimes, just sharing your feelings with someone who listens can be incredibly healing.

Create New Traditions
If old traditions bring more pain than joy, consider starting new ones. Whether it’s volunteering at a local shelter, hosting a game night with friends, or taking a solo trip, creating a fresh approach to the holidays can help shift your perspective.

Practice Gratitude
It’s easy to focus on what’s missing during the holidays, but shifting your attention to what you do have can be a powerful antidote to sadness. Keeping a gratitude journal or simply taking a moment each day to reflect on something you’re thankful for can improve your mood.

Tackling Loneliness During the Holidays

For those spending the holidays alone, finding ways to connect with others—even in small ways—can make a big difference. Consider reaching out to community groups, attending local events, or volunteering. Helping others often provides a sense of purpose and connection.

Dr. Manly also suggests planning ahead to create a holiday experience that feels meaningful to you. “Being alone doesn’t have to mean being lonely,” she says. “Use the time to reflect, recharge, and engage in activities that bring you joy.”

When to Seek Professional Help

If you’re feeling overwhelmed to the point where it’s interfering with your daily life, or if you’re experiencing thoughts of self-harm or hopelessness, it’s important to seek professional help. Therapists and counselors can provide tools and strategies for managing your emotions, and sometimes medication may be helpful.

Dr. Rosenthal emphasizes that reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness. “The holidays are hard for many people,” he says. “There’s no shame in seeking support to help you get through them.”

Conclusion

The holidays may never be perfect, but they don’t have to be a source of dread, either. By setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and leaning on support systems, you can navigate the season with more resilience and joy. Remember: It’s okay to put yourself first and redefine what the holidays mean to you.

So take a deep breath, let go of unrealistic expectations, and embrace the season for what it is—messy, imperfect, but also full of opportunities to connect, reflect, and grow. You’ve got this.

Lady Trailblazers drop home showdown with Mineral Area College

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers hit the hardwood for the first time after the Thanksgiving holiday break Saturday afternoon for their third meeting with the Lady Cardinals of Mineral Area College.

The Lady Blazers fought hard but ultimately fell to the Lady Cardinals 83-58 inside the Physical Education Complex.

The game got off to a slow start after the holiday break with defense shining the most in the opening quarter.

Vincennes was able to jump in front with a 12-2 scoring run and hold a 14-11 lead over Mineral Area after the opening 10 minutes of action.

The Lady Cardinals came back firing in the second quarter however, using a 9-0 scoring run and a 10-0 scoring run in the second quarter to grab the lead back and head into the locker room break with a 37-25 advantage over the Lady Blazers.

Coming out of the halftime break Vincennes looked to cut into the Mineral Area lead and were able to build some momentum with six straight points midway through the third period before the Lady Cardinals closed out the third quarter strong to take a 56-41 lead into the final 10 minutes.

The Lady Cardinals were able to maintain their lead throughout the fourth quarter, pulling away late and cruising down the stretch as Mineral Area capped off an 83-58 victory over the Lady Trailblazers.

“The first quarter was promising,” VU Interim Head Coach Ingrida Hartsfield said. “The rest of the game was just poor effort. It all goes back to rebounding, boxing out and defense and again that all goes back to effort. You have to be able to box out, fight for the ball and play defense.”

VU was led offensively by another big double-double by freshman Delora Pricop (Satu Mare, Romania) who finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, securing her fourth double-double of the season.

Freshman Netala Dixon (Dyersburg, Tenn.) had a strong second half, finishing her night with 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Freshman Ahmya Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the third Lady Blazer scorer in double figures, finishing the game with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Freshman Jazmyn Robey (Sellersburg, Ind.) made her Lady Blazer debut, coming away with seven points and two rebounds in her first collegiate game.

“I think Ahmya Thomas was probably about the only one who gave good effort on both sides of the floor,” Hartsfield added. “Delora did have a double-double but there were a lot of missed layups and a lot of rebounds given up that allowed her matchup to score more than she should have tonight.”

The Lady Trailblazers will look to regroup and rebound when they hit the floor next week for another tough showdown, this time against the No. 4-ranked Lady Raiders of Three Rivers Community College.

VU will take on the Lady Raiders Wednesday, Dec. 4, with tip-off scheduled for 5 p.m. eastern and will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at the P.E. Complex.

“I hope that we can come together and all together have heart in what we are doing,” Hartsfield said. “Defense and rebounding and effort as well as just playing together on offense with more execution. The game we played at Three Rivers, it again all came down to effort and rebounds and for some reason we just cannot get that down.”

Second-half comeback falls just short for UE women’s basketball
The Purple Aces increased their second-half shooting percentage by almost 20%
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Evansville women’s basketball team ended its time at the Big Easy Classic with a 65-54 loss to the Delaware Blue Hens.
The Purple Aces offense struggled to find its rhythm during the first half of their final game during Feast Week. UE only shot 14% in the first 20 minutes but was able to turn things around in the final 20. Yet Evansville couldn’t catch up to Delaware after they opened up a 23-point lead near the end of the first half. Freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) exploded in the second half with 16 points to lead the Aces on offense, scoring 22 points after 40 minutes against the Blue Hens.
UE opened the game’s scoring with a second-chance layup from sophomore guard Maggie Hartwig (Sauk City / Sauk Prairie HS). A free throw by senior guard Júlia Palomo (La Seu D’Urgell, Spain) a minute after Delaware went to the line put Evansville back up by one. But the Aces offense would go cold for the next six minutes as the Blue Hens built an 18-point lead. UE didn’t score another bucket from the floor until the quarter’s final minute as senior forward Anica Skrivan (Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina) made a jump shot.
Evansville’s offensive struggles from the floor continued in the second quarter. Freshman guard Camryn Runner (Cicero, Ind. / Hamilton Heights HS) made two free throws early, but the Aces’ first field goal came over four minutes into the quarter. Hartwig broke an over two-minute stretch with no points from either team with a driving layup. Runner went back to the line soon after to cut UE’s deficit to 17 points. Evansville only scored two more field goals in the first half as they headed into halftime down by 21 points to Delaware.
The Aces got things going quickly to start the second half with five straight points. It was a back-and-forth game for most of the third quarter. UE had one other brief run with three minutes to go in the third to bring the deficit down to 16. The Blue Hens were able to get their lead back to 19 as neither team scored in the final two minutes of the quarter.
Evansville had a big start to the final frame at the Big Easy Classic with a seven-point run in the first three minutes. The Aces held Delaware from making any runs until the final minute of the game, bringing the Blue Hens shooting percentage down to 18.2%. During the middle of the fourth quarter, it was a back-and-forth game. UE got within 12 points of Delaware on three separate occasions in the fourth. But Evansville wasn’t able to catch up with the Blue Hens in the 65-54 loss.
Along with Runner, Hartwig ended the night in double digits with 11 points after only scoring four in the first half. Runner made 12 of her 22 points at the charity stripe for the Aces for her second-best game at the line. While not scoring in double digits, Palomo was a big part of the Aces offensive turnaround in the second half, leading the team with three steals.
UE returns home to Meeks Family Fieldhouse for a single game next weekend. Evansville will welcome SIUE to the River City on Sunday, December 8th. Tip-off against the Cougars is set for 1 p.m. at Meeks.

THUNDERBOLTS RALLY TO GAIN POINT, FALL 4-3 IN SHOOUTOUT

Knoxville, Tn.:  The Thunderbolts fought for a well-earned point, rallying from two one-goal deficits to force overtime and then a shootout, however the Ice Bears prevailed 4-3 on Saturday in Knoxville.  The Thunderbolts’ next home game will be on Saturday, December 7th against the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05pm CT.
Evansville grabbed the first lead of the game, as Tyson Gilmour scored his team-leading 6th goal of the season at 5:53 of the first period, assisted by Bronson Adams.  The Ice Bears tied the game at 13:59 with a power play goal from Eric Olson.  Late in the period, Olson challenged Jordan Simoneau after taking a penalty and did very poorly as Simoneau pounded Olson to the ice twice in a very one-sided fight, that Simoneau initially started on the defensive.  Seconds later, Matthew Hobbs took on Jimmy Soper in a captain-versus-captain scrap in the neutral zone, with Hobbs scoring the takedown towards the end.  6:17 into the second period, Carson Vance scored a power play goal to give Knoxville a 2-1 lead.
The Thunderbolts rallied later in the second period, as Brendan Harrogate tied the game at 2-2 with a rebound goal off the rush, assisted by Scott Kirton and Gilmour at 14:34.  However, the Ice Bears regained the lead at 19:25 on a goal from Dalton Skelly.  The Thunderbolts dominated the third period, and Logan vande Meerakker tied the game at 10:38 off a rush up the far wing, assisted by Myles Abbate.  Evansville and Knoxville traded several scoring chances in overtime, but the game would not be finished until the shootout, where the Ice Bears emerged victorious 3-2 in the shootout, and the game 4-3.  Kirton and Harrogate provided Evansville’s shootout goals in the second and fourth rounds, respectively.
Gilmour finished with a goal and assist, while Harrogate and vande Meerakker each scored one goal.  In goal for Evansville, Ty Taylor finished with 24 saves on 27 shots.  The Thunderbolts and Ice Bears meet once again on Saturday, December 21st at Knoxville Civic Coliseum.
