Aces Face Rice In Opening Game

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A stretch of four games in five days continues on Monday when the University of Evansville men’s basketball team opens the Gulf Coast Showcase against Rice at 10 a.m. CT.  The game will be carried live on Flo Sports and the Purple Aces Radio Network.

Last Time Out

– On Saturday, UE fell by a final of 75-69 to UCF at the Ford Center

– A turning point came in the final minute of the first half – the Knights held a 4-point lead before a 5-0 spurt sent them to the half up by nine

– UCF led by as many as 21 in the second half before winning by 16

– Shamar Givance was 4-for-7 from outside on his way to a team-high 14 points…he added six assists and a steal

– Noah Frederking was 5-of-7 from the field and scored 12 points while Jawaun Newton completed the game with 10

Doing Just About Everything

– Every time he takes the floor, Shamar Givance is a threat to record a triple-double and he has continued on that path through four games this season

– Following a 7-point, 5-assist, 4-rebound effort at Cincinnati, Givance led the Aces in points (16), rebounds (7) and steals (3) in the victory against IUPUI

– At Belmont, Givance had his season-high of 17 points, which led all scorers…he was 5-for-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from outside, tying his career-high in long-range makes before totaling 11 points, 7 helpers and 5 boards against DePauw

– Grievance added six more assists and 14 points versus UCF while hitting 4 of his 7 attempts from long range…after starting the season 1-for-6 from outside, he has knocked down 8 of his last 16

Making the Adjustment

– Junior Antoine Smith Jr. has gotten off to a nice start to his UE career…in the regular season opener, he played close to 29 minutes while recording 3 points and 2 rebounds before seeing 20:31 of work against IUPUI

– His first regular-season start came at Belmont where he grabbed two rebounds

– Smith had his top UE performance against UCF, scoring 7 points on 3-of-6 shooting

Back in Form

– Noah Frederking missed the Belmont game due to a mild injury, but rebounded nicely in the last two games

– Frederking recorded his first double-figure game of the season versus DePauw, scoring 11 points while hitting 3 of his 4 outside tries before adding 12 against UCF

– The 5th year senior averaged 3.0 PPG over the first two games but has notched 11.5 PPG in the last two

– He has hit 7 of his 12 3-point attempts on the season and started the weekend in the top five in the MVC

Looking Back

– The last trip to the Gulf Coast Showcase for UE came in 2014

– Following a 58-52 win over Fresno State in the opener, UE dropped a close 64-62 game to Green Bay

– The finale saw the Aces defeat San Francisco by a 79-72 final

Scouting the Opponent

– Rice stands at 3-1 following its first four games of the season

– Prior to heading to Florida, the Owls defeated New Orleans by a final of 83-78

– The lone defeat for the Owls came against crosstown rival Houston – 79-46 – on Nov. 12

– Three Rice players average double figures led by Travis Evee

– Even paces the team with 17.8 points per game while draining 46.9% of his 3-point tries

– Carl Pierre checks in with 12 points per game while Max Fielder is averaging 10 points and a team-high 10.8 caroms per contest

YEAR-END RESILIENCE PLANNING

Year-End Resilience Planning

By Jesse Kauffman, Lead Consultant, Everyday Business Resilience Group

We’re closing in on the end of year two of a worldwide change in the way organizations of all types and sizes operate.  With year-end activities in full swing, both typical business activities along with unique activities due to the ongoing pandemic response around the globe, now’s a great time to take some basic steps to ensure your own organization is more resilient for 2022.

Let’s look at some actions you and your organization can take over the next few weeks to minimize the potential for negative impacts from potential business disruptions.

Action 1:  Ask your key partners, vendors, and suppliers to share their business continuity and crisis management plans with you.

The last thing your organization needs during a crisis is for a critical supplier to also suffer a crisis at the same time!  While you’re trying to guide your organization through an interruption, you want to know that the companies and people you depend on are able to continue to provide the goods and services that you need to maintain your own operations.

Take some time to review the business continuity and crisis management plans of your critical vendors to ensure that they have the plans and processes in place to manage their own interruptions and crisis, and that their ability to support you as a client is included in those plans.  And if they don’t have any plans in place?  Give them my contact info!

Action 2:  Document (if you haven’t yet) and review the lessons your organization has learned this year.

With all of the change that’s happened in the last year, on top of all of the change that happened the previous year, chances are you’ve been swamped just keeping everything going.  The next few weeks are a great time to document what you’ve learned, to review it, and to incorporate into your own planning.  It can be easy to lose track of lessons learned as the pressures of daily operations pick up.

The lessons from the challenges you’ve worked through need to be captured so that you can incorporate them into both emergency planning and into making your daily operations more efficient.  The focus on critical processes that emergencies drive likely enabled you to see ways to improve your business that you otherwise would have missed.  Take advantage of those observations and make them work for your benefit!

Action 3:  Plan a test of your own business continuity or crisis management plan focusing on a risk that hasn’t happened over the last two years.

If your organization is still in operations at this point in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, then your focus has likely been completely on risks associated with the pandemic, specifically around illness, emergency regulations from government agencies, and labor shortages.  But as we’ve seen with the supply chain impacts around the world, there are ripple effects from the initial impacts that can take months to become visible.

Chances are, you know your organization has a risk, or risks, that are still present, and that you haven’t had a chance to mitigate due to the efforts required to deal with COVID impacts.  If you plan an exercise, even a basic table-top exercise, you can take the first step to mitigating risk to your business by getting a realistic idea of what the impact of an untested risk can be to your business.  And as we’ve seen with the global supply chain struggles, there’s an excellent chance that what you learn from running an exercise will help you mitigate those risks no matter when or where they happen.

In conclusion, these next few weeks are the perfect time to prepare your business, and yourself, for the upcoming year.  Hopefully these 3 actions will help you have a successful 2022, not only ensuring the resilience of your business during a crisis, but ensuring that resilience is present for your business everyday.

Taylor’s Two Steakhouse “An Oakland City Gem”

Taylor’s Two Steakhouse “An Oakland City Gem”

by Jim Staley

City-County Observer Entertainment Writer

There is an old saying “From a small acorn grows a might oak”.  Well, there is a “Might Acorn” in “OAK” land City.  And that “Mighty Acorn” is Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse.  Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse is a “Hidden Gem”, a “Diamond in the Rough”…but when you get down to it, it’s a great place to have an excellent meal at an affordable price.

New owner Paul Green is a native of Gibson County and resident of Evansville purchased Taylor’s Two Steakhouse located in Oakland City, Ind. from the original owner’s Betty and Neal Newton in July of this year. One of the reasons Paul bought Taylor’s 2 is that it had a very good reputation.  Paul plans to continue to improve the reputation while adding some of his personal touches to the place.

Since he bought the restaurant he has made very few changes to the menu and the building.  However, he has added a new bar plus a few tasty additions to the menu like Pepper Jack Cheese Balls and Tater Kegs (will get to those shortly).

The dinner menu is limited but has basically everything you might want to eat.  If you’re looking for a monster steak we recommend that you try the 18-20 oz. scrumptious ribeye.  There are also huge 1 1/2-inch Pork Chops, Ham Steak, and Jumbo Shrimp on the menu.  They all come with salad and a choice of potato.

The dinner menu may be a little limited but the choice of sandwiches is not. They have everything from the half-pound Hoosier Burger to grilled cheese and let’s not forget the thick German fried bologna sandwich.  Paul also changed the Steakhouse’s fish sandwich from a battered cod to an 8 oz. fish filet rolled in cornmeal and spices.  Add one of the great sides and you have a tasty sandwich plate. Speaking of sides, I mentioned the Tater Kegs.

Paul said “They are similar to tater tots only huge.  It is a combination of potato, cheese, and bacon, deep-fried. It is kind of like a double-baked potato.” And of course, Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse has a full-service bar.

Not long ago a group of my friends and me traveled to Oakland City to check Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse out.  We started out with the Tater Kegs which everyone completely enjoyed.  For an entree, pretty much everyone had either the Ribeye or the Pork Chops.  I had the scrumptious 18-20 ounce Ribeye. It was grilled to perfection, medium-rare, and was wonderful. I had the loaded baked potato and a specially prepared Onion Vinaigrette dressing on my salad.  I can eat a big meal in one sitting but I had to take about a third of my steak home.

The other popular choice of our group was the 1 1/2 inch Pork Chop.  Along with salad and potato, they got two “HUGE” and I mean huge Pork Chops that were grilled to perfection. Our entire group thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.

According to Paul Green, “previous owners Betty and Neal Newton built the reputation of what Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse is today”.  Paul plans on keeping and improving that good reputation.

Taylor’s 2 Steakhouse is located at 518 E Morton St. in Oakland City and is open 7 days a week. With I-69 it makes it a quick trip from Evansville and its surrounding communities to Oakland City.

We considered Taylor Two Steakhouse the best-kept culinary secret in our region!

The Week in Indiana History

mansion

1921     Governor Warren McCray and his family moved into the new Governor’s Mansion on East 27th Street in Indianapolis.  The home, designed as an English country house, was built in 1908.  It was presented to the state as a gift from the city.  The General Assembly provided $20,000 for furnishings, which included a set of ivory willow patio furniture made by inmates as the state prison in Michigan City.  The home was the first official residence for an Indiana Governor since the Civil War.

Cornell1928     Anne Cornell, a professor of Greek and Latin at Franklin College, completed her first solo air flight at the Hoosier Airfield.  One of the first women in Indiana to take flying lessons, she was reported to be “fearless with excellent judgment in flying.”  A local newspaper rerporter said that her achievement gave new meaning to “higher education.”

Statehouse

1933     A stream of county and city officials passed through the Indiana Statehouse Civil Works Office.  Over 100 more projects were approved, giving jobs to nearly 6,000 more unemployed Hoosiers.  This raised the total to 294 projects employing nearly 21,000 who had lost their jobs due to the Depression.  The work included park and street improvements, sidewalk installations, flood prevention jobs, repairs on sewage systems, and many other projects that could be rushed into action.

USS Indiana1941     A crowd of over 10,000 witnessed the launching of the new battleship USSIndiana at Newport News, Virginia.  The ceremony included speeches by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox and Indiana Governor Henry Schricker.  Music was provided by the Shortridge High School band.  The USS Indiana saw extensive action in the Pacific Theater in World War II.

JFK1963     Indiana Governor Matthew E. Welsh proclaimed a 30-day mourning period following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.  The Governor and his wife Mary attended the President’s funeral in Washington.  In Indianapolis, 3,400 soldiers took part in a somber ceremony at the Indiana World War Memorial.  Lieutenant Governor Richard Ristine placed a wreath of white chrysanthemums and carnations high on the north steps of the monument.

1996     Hilliard Gates died in his hometown of Fort Wayne.   A legend in Indiana sports, he was voted Sportscaster of the Year seven times.  Starting in 1940, he was on the air on radio station WOWO.  He later helped launch television station WKJG.  For many years, he did play-by-play for the state basketball finals, including the famous 1954 contest between Milan High School and Muncie Central High School.  In 1985, he reenacted a version of that broadcast for the movie Hoosiers.

There have been four naval vessels named for Indiana.  The first USS Indiana (BB 1) was one of the first battleships.   It served during the Spanish-American War in the 1890s.  The second USS Indiana (BB 50) was never finished.  It was cancelled during construction in the 1920s.  The third ship, USS Indiana (BB 58,) was launched in 1941 and saw heavy action in World War II.  It earned nine battle stars.  The newest USS Indiana (SSN 789) is a nuclear-powered submarine, which was commissioned in 2018.

Increasing Patrols to Promote Safe Thanksgiving Travel

0

This Thanksgiving, travel is expected to rebound to nearly pre-pandemic levels. According to AAA, it’s predicted that 48.3 million people will be taking to the roads for the holiday, an 8 percent increase from last year. Unfortunately, heavier traffic, combined with declining seat belt use and the prevalence of impaired driving, makes this travel period particularly dangerous for road users.

In response, the Indiana State Police is joining hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the state for the Safe Family Travel campaign. Over the next six weeks, officers will be out in greater numbers to discourage impaired driving and ensure drivers and passengers are properly buckled.

The high-visibility patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and will concentrate around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s.

“Driving impaired, not wearing a seat belt and speeding are always concerns around this time of year,” said Lt. Corey Culler, District Commander for the Fort Wayne Post.  “That’s why we’re increasing patrols and encouraging those traveling to buckle up, drive sober and slow down. It’s better to be late and reach your destination safely, than not at all.”

In Indiana and nationwide, reckless driving incidents remain higher than during pre-pandemic times. As of early October, 683 people have been killed in crashes statewide, which is an 8 percent increase from the same time in 2019 and on pace with 2020 – one of the deadliest years in the past decade.

With one of the busiest travel periods still ahead, officers will be working to reverse this trend by focusing on impaired and unrestrained driving, two of the main causes behind the rise in fatalities.

Of the total number of vehicle occupants killed in crashes so far this year, more than 40 percent were not wearing seat belts. Moreover, seat belt use in Indiana declined for the first time in five years from 94.9 percent before the pandemic to 92.9 percent.

“Whether you’re driving for 10 minutes or 10 hours, we’re asking everyone to plan ahead and make safety their top priority,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI Executive Director. “Don’t be the reason there’s an empty seat at your table or someone else’s this Thanksgiving.”

The Indiana State Police wants to remind motorists that most traffic fatalities can be prevented by taking some simple precautions: never drive impaired, always wear a seat belt, follow posted speed limits and avoid distractions.

Before consuming alcohol, plan a sober ride home, such as a designated driver or using a ride service or public transportation. Motorists are encouraged to call 911 if they encounter an impaired or unsafe driver on the road.

However, impaired driving isn’t the only concern during the holiday season. Winter weather also poses challenges for motorists, and it’s important to be prepared.

Always have an emergency kit in the vehicle with food, water, a phone charger, sand or cat litter, flares or bright LED alternatives, a flashlight, and blankets. Keep the vehicle full of gas, and make sure the battery is strong, fluids are at the correct levels and the spare tire is properly inflated.

No. 6/12 Indiana Completes Solid Week at Fall Invite

0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana swimming and diving completed a strong showing at the Ohio State Fall Invitational, highlighted by a first-place finish in the men’s competition Saturday (Nov. 20) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

A wire-to-wire win, Indiana dominated the meet with 2,830 total points over the three-day event, 547 points better than the next-best team, host Ohio State (2283).

“The men won this competition convincingly, but we have a lot of work to do on relays as well,” Indiana head swimming coach Ray Looze said. “When one man goes down, another needs to step up and get the job done. This team has superior depth but needs to have a better idea what a championship mentality really entails. We must demand excellence of ourselves at all times.”

Indiana’s women’s team (2023 points) kept the margins close all three days but settled for a third-place finish behind Ohio State (2258) and Kentucky (2198).

“We got a good taste of what it will be like in a three-team battle at the Big Ten Championships in February,” Looze said. “Although we came out on the short end of the stick, our women gained valuable experience which we will use to take the next steps as a program. An important goal in our next several dual meets will be winning relays. We came close this weekend but need to breakthrough in this valuable area.”

On the weekend, Indiana diving won all three men’s events and sophomore diver Anne Fowler finished second in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.

“It was a great weekend for Hoosier diving,” IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. “The entire team had strong performances. It was a nice return for Andrew Capobianco in all three events, and Carson Tyler had a standout performance in the platform today.

“Anne Fowler continued to position herself as a top performer in the Big Ten and nationally against some of the best women’s programs in the country. We were also excited to see Kristen Hayden in her first showing as a Hoosier.”
