Volleyball travels to Belmont and Murray State

Aces in action Friday and Saturday

 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Two road matches are on tap this weekend when the University of Evansville volleyball team travels to Belmont and Murray State. UE faces the Bruins at 6 p.m. Friday before taking on the Racers on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Recapping the Weekend

– On Oct. 14 UE recorded a 3-1 victory at Indiana State as Hinsley Everett reset her career mark with 24 kills while Chloe Cline finished the contest with 10

– Evansville welcomed UNI on Saturday with the Panthers winning by a 3-0 final

– Everett paced the squad with 11 kills

Top Mark in the MVC

– Finishing the road match at Indiana State with 24 kills, Hinsley Everett reset her career mark while helping UE secure the win

– Her tally is tied for the most by an MVC player this season

– Her previous high of 17 kills came against MTSU and her total tied for the most by a UE player this season

losing in on the top ten

– Ainoah Cruz continues to move up the national digs rankings as her season average of 5.08 per set is 12th in the NCAA and remains second in the MVC

– Cruz eclipsed the 1,000-dig mark earlier this season against UAB and is on the cusp of moving into the top 10 in program history

Scouting the Opposition

– Belmont stands at 13-5 overall and is 4-4 in conference play

– The Bruins lost both road matches at UIC and Valparaiso last weekend

– Brooke Gilleland paces the team with 3.51 kills per set

– Murray State enters the weekend at 3-14 overall and 1-7 in the Valley

– Ella Vogel holds the team lead with 3.65 kills per game

 

Vincennes University to hold annual Veterans Day program on Nov. 11

VINCENNES, Ind., October 22, 2025 – Vincennes University will again host a Veterans Day Program honoring all of the brave men and women who have served in the United States military. The special tribute will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. (ET) in the Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.

 

Sponsored by the VU Support Staff Council, the program will honor the sacrifices and contributions of service members. VU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members are encouraged to attend.

 

This year’s guest speaker is Major General (Retired) Richard L. Stevens. The Vincennes native completed over 35 years of service in the U.S. Army, culminating as the Deputy Chief of Engineers/Deputy Commanding General for the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

 

The VU Pep Band and Choir will also perform.

USI’s Hall earns another weekly honor

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Cross Country junior Ellie Hall has been named co-Ohio Valley Conference Runner of the Week honors in an announcement by the league office Wednesday morning.
 
Hall is earning her second weekly honor for the second time following her sixth-place finish at the Angel Mounds Invitational this past Friday. Hall finished the six-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 16.2 seconds as the Screaming Eagles finished fifth out of 19 teams.
 
The weekly honor marks the fourth time this season that a USI women’s student athlete has earned OVC Runner of the Week honors. Sophomore Hadessah Austin earned the honor twice before Hall garnered her first accolade three weeks ago.
 
USI returns to action October 31 when it defends its conference title at the OVC Championships in Charleston, Illinois. The men’s 8k is scheduled for 9 a.m., while the women’s 6k is slated to begin at 10 a.m.

No. 2/9 Hoosiers Handle Kentucky

 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite missing several athletes to World Aquatics Swimming World Cup action, Indiana swimming and diving showed its depth with decisive victories over Kentucky Wednesday inside the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington.

Seven freshmen registered an event win or contributed to a relay victory. Veteran swimmers Kristina Paegle, Toby Barnett and Raekwon Noel as well as experienced divers Ella Roselli and Maxwell Weinrich led the way.

Barnett and Noel each tallied three individual victories, Barnett sweeping the men’s breaststroke events and Noel the backstroke races. Roselli swept the diving boards, and Indiana diving totaled 12 NCAA zone qualifying scores.

Cuts to the state’s child care system have created the perfect storm. Indiana must fix it.

Indiana’s child care system serves as critical support for the state’s economy. It is also under enormous strain.

Wait lists, caps on enrollment for vulnerable children, an end to child care referral supports, and cuts to reimbursement rates further erode the shoreline on which Hoosiers’ economic house is built.

If, as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has estimated, Indiana misses out on over $4 billion annually in economic activity due to our child care deficiencies, we are poised to lose more in the coming years.

A recent survey from Early Learning Indiana found that providers are reporting enrollment declines, and more than three-fourths of providers have seen funding cuts for Child Care and Development Fund vouchers, the state’s largest child care subsidy for low-income households.

Let’s be clear: These enrollment declines are not about reduced demand. They reflect a lack of support for families who need child care to work as well as wage growth that continues to lag inflation. Families still need care, and in many parts of our state demand exceeds supply. But affordability remains a crisis point for Indiana’s working families at all income levels.

Not investing in our state’s child care system – and in fact disinvesting in that system – comes at a cost.

Nearly a quarter of child care providers surveyed by Early Learning Indiana said they plan to cut services because of financial insecurity: from closing one classroom to shuttering their entire program.

These cuts create a perfect storm that jeopardizes care for all, not only those families who receive a voucher. Indiana’s families cannot afford these losses, and Indiana’s employers cannot afford to lose workers who will be sidelined because they can’t get child care.

Child care providers — and the families they serve — will feel the impact come October, when the state’s reimbursement rate cuts go into effect.

We acknowledge the real economic headwinds facing the state and do not envy the choices that have to be made to balance budgets or make sure public programs remain viable. But we also believe the state has an obligation and an opportunity to lead in ensuring Hoosiers have the resources they need to survive and thrive.

We need more voices at the table in setting child care policy; more ways to end waitlists for child care vouchers; and to create provider reimbursement rates that reflect the true costs of care and the genuine ability of families to pay. Families need, and deserve, these investments.

Families and employers count on child care to support economic opportunities and community stability. We need government partners to renew their commitments to the child care sector and the children it serves.
