With extreme summer temperatures expected in Indiana over the next several days, cooling centers will be open across the state for those in need of a safe and cool place to stay. Indiana 211 is your community’s resource for updated locations and hours of cooling centers in your area. To see a list of current cooling centers CLICK HERE.

Please partner with Indiana 211, a division of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, to make sure Hoosiers know they can call 2-1-1 or 866-211-9966 to find their nearest cooling center. We ask you to share the information below on your social media channels to make sure the public is aware that help is available. Please like our social media pages to stay aware of happenings and repost from IN211’s official social channels.

Congressman Baird Statement on U.S. Airstrikes on Iran’s Nuclear Sites

Washington, D.C. – Today,​ Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) released the following statement on the U.S. airstrikes which destroyed three of Iran’s nuclear sites:

“The president has been consistent and clear: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. President Trump gave Iran every opportunity to make a deal, but Iran failed to come to an agreement and has terrorized Israel and Americans for decades. Thanks to President Trump’s decisive action, three of Iran’s key nuclear enrichment sites have been decimated. May God bless our brave, heroic troops for successfully completing this mission, and I thank them for their outstanding service to our country. God bless America.”

Otters can’t hang on to early lead in series finale

JOLIET, Ill. – A late rally from the Joliet Slammers (21-18) pushed them past the Evansville Otters (17-21), 4-3. Evansville surrendered three runs in the final two frames after leading 3-1.

Braden Scott made his eighth start and after a rocky first couple of batters, settled in well. He retired the next three batters, allowing one run to score.

Ellis Schwartz exploded with a leadoff triple in the third, and was brought in by a sacrifice fly from Graham Brown. In the fifth inning, Schwartz launched a solo home run to give Evansville the lead 2-1. Scott kept dealing and grabbed eight strikeouts across the next few innings.

JJ Cruz led the seventh with a 443-foot home run to extend the Otters lead to 3-1. Scott entered the seventh, but after two leadoff walks and a sac bunt, Nick McAuliffe was called on to slam the door. After a fly ball to center kept the runners put and a slow roller to short, it looked like he had done just that. But a bang-bang play at first didn’t go the Otters way and a run scored, finishing Scott’s day with two earned runs.

Two runners reached with one out in the eighth and Evansville went to Alex Valdez. He got a force out at second but after a wild pitch allowed the runner from first to get to second, a two-strike single gave Joliet a 4-3 lead.

The Otters couldn’t get a hit in the ninth, even though they had two balls come off the bat at over 100 miles per hour, and fell 4-3 in the rubber match to Joliet.

Evansville has an off day Monday before travelling to Gateway to take on the Grizzlies for their midweek series. The series opener on Tuesday will start at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Braun says he has ‘no interest’ in presidential run

Gov. Mike Braun said Thursday he has no idea who came up with the swirling rumor that he is interested in a presidential run.

“That’s had nothing to do with anything I’ve said,” Braun told the Indiana Capital Chronicle. “I’m concentrating on being governor, and have no interest in that.”

Politico’s Adam Wren first reported that the Indiana GOP governor was privately discussing the idea of mounting a presidential run in 2028, citing three unnamed sources.

“Don’t know who came up with that,” Braun said.

Prior to his inauguration in January, Braun was one of Indiana’s two senators in Washington D.C. But the one-term congressman seemed to have little interest in returning to the nation’s capital.

The Capital Chronicle asked Braun about the idea after he spoke to Future Farmers of America students at a state convention in West Lafayette.

“I get asked that often by people that are good supporters, especially from the time I spent out in the Senate. But when I came back here and gave up another term there, this was about a job that looks like you’re going to get a lot more done with the time that you’re spending at it.”

In a press availability Thursday afternoon Braun doubled down, questioning the source of the rumor.

“I’m focused on being the most entrepreneurial governor we’ve got in this country … I’m focusing on this job and I think we’ve got a lot done,” Braun said. “… we’ve been doing things bolder than what most states would do and going after tough issues like health care, education (and) workforce. Doing things that others aren’t doing and that’s what I’m going to focus on.”

The 71-year-old is Indiana’s oldest governor and a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, who is term limited. He spent much of his time in the U.S. Senate criticizing the nation’s deficit. The wealthy businessman has spent his first months in office as governor trimming the state budget, trying to reform property taxes and focusing on health care regulations and laws.

When Hoosiers are making important decisions about their medical needs, one of the most important influences should be a licensed medical practitioner — not an employee within a health insurance company.

Unfortunately, in recent years, too many decisions about a patient’s health care needs have been made by their insurance company through a process known as prior authorization, which health insurance companies use to determine if their plan will cover medical procedures or medication.

This year, I was proud to co-author Senate Enrolled Act 480, which requires medical decisions be made by a licensed medical practitioner.

This legislation also:

  • Prevents prior authorization from being used as an excuse to deny reasonable insurance claims;
  • Speeds up timelines for prior authorization determination and appeals; and
  • Requires health plans to be more transparent about their prior authorization procedures.

SEA 480 received widespread bipartisan support in the Indiana General Assembly this year and was ceremonially signed into law by the governor on June 18.
