Eagles Show Promise In Loss To Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball displayed promise for the 2021-22 season in a tough exhibition loss at Auburn University, 68-54, Friday evening in Auburn, Alabama.

The Screaming Eagles flew out of the gate, starting with a 9-0 run behind four points from junior forward Jacob Polakovich (Grand Rapids, Michigan); a three-pointer by junior guard/forward Jelani Simmons (Columbus, Ohio), and a bucket by freshman guard Elijah Jones (Chicago Heights, Illinois). USI would hold onto the lead until Auburn went on a 10-0 run to lead 23-21 with 5:17 left in the opening half.

The Eagles and the Tigers would trade leads for the final five of the first half until Auburn took a 34-32 advantage into the intermission. After the first 20 minutes, freshman guard Isaiah Swope (Newburgh, Indiana) was the first Eagle to reach double digits with 13 points.

USI opened the final half with a quick surge and regained the lead 38-37 on a dunk by Jones at 17:44. The Tigers would use a 4-0 run to regain the advantage, 41-38, before the Eagles exploded on a 16-5 run to get the lead back, 54-46.

During the run, USI was six-of-10 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and two-of-three from the line. Simmons led the charge with five of the 16 points, including a three-pointer that capped off the run with 9:02 to play.

Auburn responded with an 11-0 run to retake command of the contest and the lead for good with 6:22 remaining, 57-54. The Tigers extended the run to 22-0 in finishing out the 68-54 final, holding the Eagles scoreless for nine minutes.

In the final box, Swope would lead the Eagles in scoring with 15 points on six-of-14 from the field, including three three-pointers. Simmons joined Swope in double-figures with 10 points.

Polakovich and Jones led the Eagles on the glass with 10 rebounds each. USI lost the overall battle on the board, 39-36, despite being undersized.

COMING UP FOR USI:
USI starts the 2021-22 regular season on November 18 when it hosts Oakland City University at Screaming Eagles Arena. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

The Eagles hold a 37-10 all-time series lead over the Mighty Oaks, dating back to USI’s first collegiate season in 1970. USI has won the last 14 meetings with Oakland City since a season split in the 1991-92 season.

The Mighty Oaks, who were 5-18 last season in the NAIA, started their 2021-22 campaign with a 74-64 win over Grace College. Oakland City has four more regular-season games to be played before coming to Evansville to visit the Eagles.

Gov. Holcomb Announces $1.7 Million Investment To Curb Drug Epidemic

1

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Eric J. Holcomb today announced the state will fund a $1.7 million implementation of statewide Harm Reduction Street Outreach (HRSO) teams to reach Hoosiers at-risk of drug overdose. The initiative is a combined effort of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration and the Indiana Department of Health.

“Substance use is aggressively attacking Hoosier lives, families, and communities,” Gov. Holcomb said. “These teams will meet Hoosiers with substance use disorder where they’re at through street outreach efforts and provide them with the safety tools and resources necessary to keep them alive.”

Indiana reported a 33% increase in fatal overdoses in 2020, according to provisional data released in July by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

HRSO teams are comprised of one supervisor and two outreach workers who provide harm reduction strategies and resources such as naloxone and pamphlets to members of the community. Organizations employing HRSO teams must have a connection to the local community, with knowledge of areas where illicit substance use is high. Organizations are also connected to the community through harm reduction, substance use, recovery, or homeless services.

Funds were made available by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Prevention and Treatment Block Grants for COVID-19 relief, received by the FSSA Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA).

DMHA requested a proposal from interested candidates including a project narrative and budget. Proposals also included details regarding the extent of need in the community, how this project meets those needs, plans for staffing, previous harm reduction experience, and budget-related details.

The Awardees Include:

  • The Artistic Recovery; Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties
  • Recovery Café Fulton County (We Bloom, Inc.)
  • Recovery Café Indy (We Bloom, Inc.); Marion County
  • The Never Alone Project; Marion County
  • Fayette County Connection Café
  • Open Door Health Services and Addictions Coalition of Delaware County
  • Gateway to Hope and Meridian Health Services; Tippecanoe County
  • Indiana Recovery Alliance; Monroe County
  • Project ME FW, Inc.; Allen County
  • AIDS Ministries/AIDS Assist of North Indiana; Elkhart and St. Joseph counties

DMHA received 25 proposals, with the ability to fund 10 teams. Of these applicants, 22 agencies were not current vendors with DMHA.

“Given the impact of COVID-19 on Indiana’s overdose rate and the rise in fentanyl use, it’s important that we make these critical tools and resources accessible to those in need,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director for drug prevention, treatment, and enforcement for the state of Indiana. “Hoosiers are answering the call. They are on the front lines of the drug epidemic, reducing the chance of overdose and promoting treatment and recovery.”

All teams will receive harm reduction-specific training organized by DMHA before engaging participants.

Redbirds defeat Aces in weekend opener

UE faces Bradley on Saturday

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State opened the night with a 25-13 win and kept up the intensity on their way to a 3-0 win over the University of Evansville volleyball team on Friday night in Redbird Arena.

Evansville (17-7, 7-6 MVC) was led by Giulia Cardona’s 12 kills with Alondra Vazquez adding eight.  Melanie Feliciano had a team-high nine digs while Cecilia Thon added 18 assists.  Tamara Otene paced the Redbirds (15-11, 11-3 MVC) with 13 kills while Kaity Weimerskirch had 11 digs.

Set 1 – ISU 25, UE 13

The Redbirds set the early tone in the opening frame, opening up a 7-2 lead with Nora Janka capping it off with an ace.  After a kill by Cardona, ISU continued to add to its lead, extending it to double figures with another run that made it a 17-6 score.  From there, the Redbirds took a 25-13 decision to take the first set.

Set 2 – ISU 26, UE 24

An early kill by Melanie Feliciano saw the Purple Aces tie things up at 4-4.  Illinois State responded by posting the next seven points to take their largest lead of the frame.  Evansville showed its character, scrapping for each point.  Their work would pay off when consecutive service aces by Laura Ruiz tied the game back up at 16-16.  After falling behind by the 11-4 score, the Aces responded immediately with five in a row.  A Cardona kill got it started before Alondra Vazquez added another.  Feliciano also had an ace to chip into the deficit.

After the Aces tied it up, the Redbirds wrestled the lead away, going up 20-17.  Down to its final point trailing 24-22, UE stormed back when kills by Vazquez and Feliciano tied it up.  Illinois State regained control with the final two points, winning by a 26-24 final on their way to a 2-0 lead.

Set 3 – ISU 25, UE 10

In the third set, it was another early run by the Redbirds that gave them control.  Scoring the first six points of the set, ISU grabbed the momentum and would not give it up.  Evansville got within five, but the Redbirds answered each time, pulling away for a 25-10 win to clinch the match by a final of 3-0.

On Saturday, UE will look for a weekend split when they face Bradley in a 5 p.m. contest in Peoria.

DEATH IS SWALLOWED FOREVER (ISAIAH 25:8)

DEATH IS SWALLOWED FOREVER (ISAIAH 25:8)

GAVEL GAMUT By Jim Redwine

Barbara (Taylor) Pease passed away ten days after my brother Phil Redwine. Their Baptist Christian services were similar in several comforting ways. They were also differing as Phil’s funeral was in Norman, Oklahoma, and Barbara was honored as a member of the Osage Nation in Indian Camp in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Peg and I had attended Barbara’s mother, Judy Taylor’s, funeral in 2016 and were moved by the Osage graveside rites. Perhaps the coincidence of my appointment as a Special Judge in a recent Indian law case made Barbara’s services even more impressive to Peg and me. I know I was surprised about how little I knew of Osage traditions even though I was born and raised in Pawhuska.

As part of my legal research into an area of the law completely new to me, I went to my personal library and reviewed my autographed copy of John Joseph Mathews’ book, The Osages, Children of the Middle Waters. Mr. Mathews was well known to my parents and, at our mother’s request, Mathews signed a copy of his book “with special pleasure” to my brother Phil and me. Mathew’s extensive scholarship into Osage traditions brought out the beauty and solace of Osage burial rites.

Barbara’s services included former Osage Chief Johnny Red Eagle fanning over Barbara’s body with an eagle-tail fan. This impressive ritual reminded me of the following passage in Mathews’ book that described a burial of several Osage members of a hunting party who were killed by a lightning strike:

“The survivors came into the village carrying their comrades and singing their song of death. The Little Old Men looked at the sky in fear, then fanned away the evil spirit from the bodies with an eagle-tail fan…”

See Page 68

At Barbara’s services, Palee Redcorn sang beautiful, haunting and comforting acapella renditions of hymns in the Osage language and then transitioned seamlessly into English versions. One of those death songs was the traditional Christian hymn, “Amazing Grace”. At my brother’s funeral his youngest son, Ryan, who is an ordained Baptist minister, sang a deeply felt acapella version of “Amazing Grace” from the pulpit.

Of course, Ryan also gave a marvelous and inspiring message under the most difficult of emotions to honor his father much as Reverend Scott Kohnle of the Indian Camp Baptist Church spoke for Barbara. I do not know if Ryan’s mother’s Native American heritage influenced Ryan’s message for his Dad, but I do know Ryan and Scott both captured the essence of Barbara’s family and our grief and pride in our loved ones. Barbara and Phil were similar in their kindness and generosity and in their steadfast pride and support of their numerous grandchildren.

To lose two such priceless members of our small circle within ten days of one another was a lot to bear, but the thoughtful and heartfelt services helped. Peg and I now better understand the communal support of family and tribe.
