Beware Of Fad Diets And Fast Weight Loss Promises

0
VINCENNES, Ind., July 26, 2021 – Call it the “Quarantine 15” or “COVID-19”, many people are reporting that the buttons on their clothing have been social distancing.
Sixty-one percent of adults reported experiencing undesired weight changes since the start of the pandemic, according to a February 2021 American Psychological Association survey. Forty-two percent, more than two in five survey participants, said they gained more weight than they intended.
Factors such as stress, isolation, lockdown orders, boredom, lack of access to gyms or recreational facilities, more time spent indoors, may have contributed to weight gain.
College students will soon return to campus for the fall semester. Some possibly with unwanted pounds. College students are often the target of ad messages promoting fad diets and various weight loss plans, which may not be healthy options and which Vincennes University health experts warn against.
As the world attempts to emerge from this pandemic, getting back on track to a healthy lifestyle and following healthy habits is of great concern or priority, especially as many people are preparing to go back to school or return to the office.
Vincennes University Professor and Nutrition and Dietetics Program Chair Lou Ann Lindsey, R.D.N., M.S., emphasizes that “Two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese, so many of us could benefit from positive dietary changes. Healthy eating and exercise habits may directly aid with weight control and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Lowered blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and moderated blood sugars are often the result of weight loss. In addition, healthy lifestyles make us feel better about ourselves and improve our mental outlook and lower our stress levels. Rather than focus too much on the scales, I would suggest focusing on the healthy eating and exercise habits, and then the weight takes care of itself.”
Lindsey suggests people should steer clear of fad diets and fraudulent products or supplements that claim to help with weight loss.
“People who might want professional help with planning a healthy weight loss diet would benefit from the services of a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist,” Lindsey said. “Most often, a dietitian consultant can be found through a local hospital on an outpatient basis. They may need a referral from their physician. Of course, there are many self-help programs and activities that can be useful in improving one’s diet and activity level.”
Lindsey recommends going to the www.MyPlate.gov website to get more information.
“There is also a handy app to download from that website that will help them be able to track food intake as well as activity levels,” Lindsey said. “There is also a lot of helpful information there on planning a diet to meet their nutritional needs as well as to help with weight loss.”
Students interested in learning more about nutrition and healthy eating can enroll in VU’s Fundamentals of Nutrition course. One of the most important concepts the class covers is how to identify sources of good nutrition information.
Physical fitness and being active are critical components in overall health and wellness.
According to VU College of Health Sciences and Human Performance Dean Michelle Cummins, “Exercise is more than losing weight. There are countless proven upsides to incorporating fitness and being active into a daily routine. Regular exercise and moving your body have many physical, emotional, and mental benefits for the whole being.”
Kinesiology studies the mechanics of human movement and how they impact health and wellbeing. VU’s Kinesiology and Sport, Wellness and Exercise degree prepares students for potential careers in fitness/wellness centers and health clubs in addition to community, employee, and institutional exercise programs.
Being healthy, fit, and well is a lifelong venture.
Vincennes University supports total wellness and health for the mind, body, and spirit.
Students, faculty, and staff have access to a myriad of resources and services, including the following.

They offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor options, including a fitness center, a state-of-the-art pool adaptable for either leisure or competition, and training with water lounge seating, a vortex, a spa, and more.
  • Intramural sports: The perfect way for students to fire up their competitive spirit and interact with their peers is to take part in intramural sports. VU has introduced a new simple process for students who want to participate in sports like basketball, flag football, dodgeball, and volleyball to sign up through the IMLeagues app or website.
  • Kimmell Park: Situated along the Wabash River, VU offers many outdoor opportunities, including the 8.5-acre park. Located near the Construction Technology Building and Track House, Kimmell park is a popular spot for fishing and panoramic views of the river. It also features a riverfront walking, jogging, and bicycle path that connects the park to downtown and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park.

Evansville Regional Economic Partnership Announces Key Promotion In Its Early Months

0

The Evansville Regional Economic Partnership (E-REP), a unified organization advancing the interests of businesses while fueling economic and community growth, is pleased to announce the promotion of Audrie Burkett to Senior Vice President of Strategy and Operations. Burkett is well-known throughout the Evansville Region for her work as part of the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana where she most recently served as the Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. Joining the Coalition in 2015, she provided administrative oversight and led two significant initiatives: Southwest Indiana’s Regional Cities Initiative dispersing $42 million for quality of place initiatives and the Coalition’s public policy work championing increased internet access for those living in rural areas.

In her new role with E-REP, she will continue to apply her command of economic and community development strategy to position the Evansville Region for success. Serving on the E-REP leadership team, with co-CEO’s Tara Barney and Greg Wathen, Burkett will guide the team of 26 subject matter professionals providing counsel and technical assistance in talent development, innovation, entrepreneurship, public policy, and the complex alignment of public and private horse-power that is delivering the quality of place energy transforming the Evansville Region.

Making the announcement, Burkett’s long-time mentor and boss, Greg Wathen said, “We’re excited to fully recognize the talent that Audrie brings to E-REP as she is a thoughtful strategic thinker and her value has been demonstrated in countless ways over the past year.  It also reflects our strong desire to identify and promote talent within the organization.”

Most recently, Burkett has been a key contributor to the successful alignment of the three organizations that comprise E-REP and has added responsibilities for overseeing all aspects of the merger, both internal and external.  Her new role leading strategy and operations will position E-REP to fulfill its commitment to regional stakeholders to deliver impactful and measurable services to businesses and communities while also building a stronger Evansville region.

“I am lucky that my everyday professional life revolves around strengthening my hometown community, said Burkett. “Thinking about the future vision for our region in its simplest terms, when our children are able to make the choice where to live, we should be working hard now to make that decision an easy one.”

Burkett is a Purdue Boilermaker with a B.S. in Agricultural Communications and honed her project management and peer leadership skills with a four-year stint at Angie’s List where she worked alongside the co-founder and CMO during a period of extraordinary growth.  In 2020, she was recognized as a Mitch Daniels Leadership Fellow, a prestigious two-year program designed to catalyze passionate Hoosiers to invest in Indiana.

“It has been my honor to get to know Audrie Burkett over these past three years.  Her promotion is well-earned and is the beginning of a bright future for E-REP, our stakeholders, and members.  I have every confidence that under her leadership the Evansville Region and Indiana are in great hands. Her personal commitment will strengthen the Evansville region’s innovation resources, create new opportunities for companies to scale, and accelerate our journey to advance regional prosperity and global relevance,” said Tara Barney, E-REP co-CEO.

A Posey County native, Burkett boomeranged back to Southwest Indiana in 2015 and resides in the Evansville region with her husband and daughter. Outside of E-REP, Burkett is an integral part of her family’s small business, a dental practice located on Evansville’s Westside. Burkett has served on the board of directors for the Art’s Council of Southwest Indiana and Vanderburgh County Fair.

Otters’ Scott named Frontier League Pitcher of the Week

0

The Frontier League has named Evansville Otters pitcher Braden Scott the Pitcher of the Week.

Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation, chooses the weekly award.

In earning the award, Scott pitched a stellar outing on Saturday against the Gateway Grizzlies on the road.

Scott earned the win after throwing 7.2 shutout innings in the start.

The former Indiana Hoosier allowed only three hits and struck out seven batters.

Scott earned his third win of the season, and his 7.2 innings matched a team-high with pitcher Ryan O’Reilly back on July 14 against Florence.

The left-hander is in his first season with the Otters, signing with the club in late June.

He is currently 3-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched this year in the Frontier League. He has also allowed just eleven walks in his six starts this season.

Scott’s honor is the second Frontier League individual honor of the 2021 season for the Otters, as infielder Riley Krane was awarded Player of the Week following the opening week of the Frontier League season.

The Otters return to action Tuesday evening from Bosse Field against the Florence Y’alls at 6:35 p.m.

Apple, Pieroni Claim Gold on Sunday Night Indiana Runs Gold Medal Count to 57

0

Four Hoosiers entered the waters in the opening days of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. Former Hoosier All-Americans Zach Apple and Blake Pieroni secured gold for the United States in the 400m Freestyle Relay on Sunday night, while Lilly King punched her ticket into the final of the 100m Breaststroke.

The Hoosiers have now won 57 gold medals at the Olympics. IU athletes have also produced 17 silvers and 32 bronze medals.

MEN’S 400m FREESTYLE RELAY

The United States dominated the field in the 400m Freestyle Relay with a gold medal-winning time of 3:08.97. Caeleb Dressel opened the race for the US with a split of 47.26 before giving way to Blake Pieroni. He used a massive back half to hold onto the American lead with a split of 47.58. Bowe Becker was third in the water for the US. He opened a 0.23 second lead with a 47.44 split. Finally, Zach Apple carried the team home with a dominant anchor leg at 46.69 to claim gold for the United States.

The time marked the fastest time swam in the event since the US won gold in the Olympic Games 2008 Beijing. The Americans (3:08.24) bested the French (3:08.32) by only 0.08 seconds in the ’08 race.

The gold is the 10th (out of 13 games) in the event for the US and the second in as many Olympic Games. The race marked the first time since 1972 (John Murphy and Mark Spitz) in which a pair of Hoosiers teamed up to win gold at the Olympics in the event. Pieroni (2016, 20) joins Spitz (1968, 72) as the only Hoosiers to repeat as Olympic champions in the event in back-to-back games.

WOMEN’S 100m BREASTSTROKE

Defending Olympic champion Lilly King will be seeded second in Monday night’s final of the women’s 100m Breaststroke after finishing second overall in the semifinals of the event with a time of 1:05.40.

If she is able to repeat her gold medal effort from the Rio games, King will have to defeat Tatjana Schoenmaker (South Africa), a feat she has not been able to accomplish through two sessions of the event today.

King and Schoenmaker will be joined by Lydia Jacoby (United States), Sophie Hansson (Sweeden), Yuliya Efimova (Russia), Evgeniia Chikunova (Russia), Martina Carraro (Italy), and Mona McSharry (Ireland) in a race for gold on Monday night.

MEN’S 400m FREESTYLE

Former Hoosier Marwan Elkamash kicked off the swimming events in the Olympics for Indiana in the heats of the men’s 400m Freestyle. He narrowly missed a spot in the semifinals after placing 14th in the event with a time of 3:46.94 while representing Team Egypt on Saturday morning.

FINAL RESULTS

WOMEN’S 100m BREASTSTROKE

  1. Lilly King – 1:05.40*

MEN’S 400m FREESTYLE

  1. Marwan Elkamash – 3:46.94 (Saturday morning)

MEN’S 400m FREESTYLE RELAY

  1. Caeleb Dressel, Blake Pieroni, Bowe Becker, Zach Apple – 3:08.97 (GOLD)

*Advanced to Final

The Hoosiers will next be represented by heats of the women’s 200m IM on Monday morning at 6:54 a.m. ET with former Hoosier Bailey Andison. King will race for gold at 10:17 p.m. ET in the final of the women’s 100m Breaststroke later in the evening.
