Hoosiers Need To Exercise Good Judgement To Avoid Scams Before And During Travel

Attorney General Todd Rokita cautions Hoosiers to be smart and safe as they prepare for spring break. For many, it is a time to relax, recharge, and take a break from school. But an essential part of enjoying spring break is ensuring everyone stays safe.

“If you’re planning a vacation over spring break, do your homework,” said Attorney General Rokita. “When planning a trip, be sure to keep an eye out for potential scams related to resorts or heavily discounted amusement park tickets. Once you are there, use good judgment when sharing details online about your trip.”

Whether it be avoiding a scam or staying safe while at your destination, here are a few tips to follow:

  • Avoid high-pressure sales pitches before you book a trip.
  • Read the fine print in the contract before you sign it. It will tell you about the conditions under which the operator can change or cancel the trip and the rules and penalties for cancellation.
  • Remember when considering spring break offers that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Pay by credit card. It gives you more protection than cash or checks.
  • Lock your valuables in your trunk or hotel safe.
  • Watch the weather. Storms can move in fast, so go to a safe place if you see lightning, hear thunder, or experience strong winds.
  • Use good judgment when checking in on Facebook and other social media sites and consider changing your privacy settings on your trip.

USI Volleyball adds former GLVC standout Robinson to staff

0
EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball Head Coach Randi Raff announced Tuesday that former Great Lakes Valley Conference standout setter Cheneta Robinson has been hired as an assistant coach for the Screaming Eagles.

“I am elated to add Cheneta to our staff and welcome her and her family back to the Evansville community,” Raff said. “Cheneta’s depth of knowledge and experience will be an incredible asset as we attack the transition to Division I this fall.

“Having been an athlete in the GLVC as well as a Division I assistant coach, she understands where we are coming from and where we are heading,” Raff continued. “Cheneta is an excellent coach and even better person, and I have no doubt she will be an incredible mentor and role model for our team.”

Robinson comes to USI from NCAA Division III Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, where she has served as the Golden Eagles’ Head Coach since 2018.

Under Robinson’s guidance, Spalding reached back-to-back St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournaments, including a berth in the semifinals in 2021.

Robinson, a two-time AVCA All-American at the University of Indianapolis, received the Diversity Award from the AVCA in 2019 and has coordinated Spalding’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during her time with the Golden Eagles.

Prior to Spalding, Robinson was the top assistant at the University of Evansville, where she assisted in coaching, recruiting and academic planning. On the court, Robinson helped recruit and develop multiple All-Missouri Valley Conference selections. In the classroom, the Purple Aces achieved the AVCA Team Academic Award in 2016-17 for achieving a 3.3 team GPA, with 50 percent of players making the dean’s list and a 100 percent graduation rate.

Robinson began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was under the tutelage of former UIndy Head Coach Jody Rogers. In her time at VCU, Robinson assisted in recruiting, practice and individual training, video analysis, travel and operations.

A member of four NCAA II Tournament teams at UIndy as well as the 2009 NCAA II Midwest Region championship squad, Robinson earned bachelor’s degree in criminal justice (2011) and human biology (2014) from UIndy as well as a master’s degree in sports leadership in 2015 from VCU.

Robinson and her husband, Justin, have a daughter, Jaley.

Nine-run third inning delivers 10th win for Aces

0
EVANSVILLE – Buoyed by a nine-run third inning, the University of Evansville baseball team captured a 10-5 midweek victory over Austin Peay on Tuesday evening at German American Bank Field in Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.
“It was nice to be back home and get a win,” said Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll. “Mark Shallenberger had a monster day as he continues to stay hot. We grinded out some at bats to have a big nine-run inning. Pitchers did enough to fight off a comeback with Kieren Hall making some big pitches. We need to have a couple days of good practices to clean up some things and get ready for Michigan State.”

The early advantage was secured by Austin Peay, who scored one in the top of the first, recording three hits and grabbing the early lead. In the first two innings, as Evansville attempted to answer quickly, the Aces earned a walk in each, but were unable to get a hit or push a run across.

Evansville’s breakthrough came in a big way in the third inning to the tune of nine runs. A pair of walks and a base hit from Shallenberger loaded the bases with no outs and a run scored as Simon Scherry reached on a fielder’s choice. A single from Brent Widder pushed Evansville in front in the next at bat, scoring Shallenberger. After a pitching change, Evan Berkey and Danny Borgstrom combined to cushion the Aces lead with three combined RBI, lifting UE to a 5-1 lead. Batting around, Ty Rumsey drew his second walk of the inning, loading the bases for Shallenberger. The St. Louis native stepped to the plate and promptly drove the ball to right center field, evading a leaping attempt by the Governors right fielder and clearing the wall for a grand slam, pushing the Aces in front, 9-1.

Austin Peay attempted to cut into its deficit with two runs in the fourth, but Evansville answered as Widder lasered a solo homer down the left field line to keep a seven-run lead for UE.

Later in the contest, the Governors would again plate two runs, doing so in the eighth inning, but Evansville reliever Kieren Hall slammed the door on any further comeback as the Aces captured the 10-5 win.

On his big day at the plate, Shallenberger moved above .400 on the season, now batting .404, and recording the first grand slam for Evansville since Eric Roberts did so against South Dakota State on April 4, 2021. Widder also recorded an impressive day at the dish, going two-for-four on the evening with two runs and two RBI. On the mound, lefty Tyler Denu earned the victory, pitching 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two hits and one run, while striking-out a pair.

Evansville’s homestand continues this weekend with a three-game set against Michigan State, beginning on Friday night at 6 PM at German American Bank Field in Evansville.

Eagles shut down by Saints, 15-8

0

ST. Louis, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball could not dig itself out of an early hole and lost to Maryville University, 15-8, Tuesday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. The Screaming Eagles are 11-11, this spring, while Maryville is 13-10 in 2022.

The Eagles found themselves in a large hole after five inning as the Saints built a 12-0 margin that included a nine-run fifth. USI started a comeback in the sixth with a five-run frame that included a grand slam by sophomore designated hitter Gavin McLarty (Buckner, Kentucky) as the Eagles shrank the gap to 12-5. The grand slam was McLarty’s first hit and home run of the season.

USI tried to close the gap with three more runs, including a solo home run by sophomore rightfielder Trent Robinson (Louisville, Indiana) in the eighth and a two-run double by junior second baseman Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana) in the ninth that cut the deficit to 15-8. The seven run deficit would be as close as the Eagles would come as the Saints closed out the win and the regular season sweep.

Up Next for the Eagles:

USI opens the GLVC 2022 conference slate this weekend when it hosts a four-game series at the USI Baseball Field April 1-3. The series starts Friday with a 6 p.m. single game.

The Eagles trail all-time series with the Hawks, 48-41, after splitting six games last spring. USI lost three of four with Quincy at home during the regular season, but bounced back to win both meetings in the GLVC Tournament at Lindenwood University.

Quincy is 12-10 overall this spring, 3-1 in the GLVC, after taking three of four from the University of Illinois Springfield at home last weekend. The Hawks are 5-5 in their last 10 outings.
