Broad Tax-Cut Package Would Help Hoosiers Businesses

0

by STATE REPRESENTATIVE Wendy McNamara

Recently, I joined my fellow House lawmakers to pass a responsible and sweeping tax-cut package that could put over $1.3 billion back in Hoosiers’ pockets.

The state’s budget reserves are expected to hit a record $5 billion at the end of fiscal year 2022. If House Bill 1002 becomes law, it would be the largest tax cut in state history.

House Bill 1002, which I supported, would deliver direct relief to working Hoosiers by phasing down the state’s individual income tax. Hoosiers would also pay less on their monthly utility bills with the elimination of the Utility Receipts Tax.

To encourage new investments, the legislation would lower Indiana’s business personal property taxes while ensuring homeowners and schools aren’t negatively impacted by the reduction in revenue.

About 4.3 million Hoosier taxpayers are set to receive a $125 refund after they file their taxes in 2022 due to higher-than-expected state revenue numbers during the 2021 fiscal year. The bill would help streamline this process and ensure about another 900,000 taxpayers also receive a refund.

Indiana has paid down well over $1 billion in debt over the last year alone, and now we have an opportunity to do what’s right by taxpayers and pass this responsible tax-cut package. House Bill 1002 is now in the Senate for further consideration.

Board of School Trustees Of The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Meeting

0

The Board of School Trustees of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation will meet for the regularly scheduled Board meeting Monday, February 7, 2022 at 5:30 PM in the Board Room of the EVSC Administration Building located at 951 Walnut Street, Evansville, IN. Seating will be limited to allow for appropriate social distancing.

As always, Board meetings can also be observed by tuning to EVSC’s radio station, 90.7 WPSR or live streamed online at https://www.wpsrhd.com/.

Prior to the regularly scheduled Board meeting, three members of the Board, along with district administrators, will hold a Town Hall beginning at 5:00 PM. This Town Hall is for Vanderburgh County residents to speak directly with Board members in attendance about issues involving EVSC schools.

The Town Hall will be the process utilized to receive Public Comment. The Town Hall will be held in the Technology and Innovation Center located at 951 Walnut Street, Evansville, IN. Members of the public who would like to attend the Town Hall should register by completing the Town Hall Registration Form located on our website at district.evscschools.com.

FOOTNOTE: Starting in July the Town Hall conversation between District Administers and three (3) school members will cease to be practice of EVSC because the Indiana State Legislature just passed a new state law that will require EVSC to allow parents, teachers and other interested individuals to be able to publicly address the board directly in an open meeting.

We are also hearing that small group of individual will be requesting that the administration of the EVSC to provide advance written copies of the agenda of the impending school board meeting.

Otters Pitcher Scott Signed By Blue Jays

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters have announced that starting pitcher Braden Scott has been signed by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Scott, from Clinton, Ind., and a former Indiana University product, signed and joined the Otters for his first professional baseball season in 2021.

“Last year was the first year that I had gotten to start since I was in junior college, so being able to find that part of my game again was very big for me, and I was able to show how successful I can be in that setting,” Scott said. “I plan to take the experiences that I learned from the season and from all the help that I got from guys in our starting rotation, in the bullpen, from the rest of our roster, and coaching staff to try to be as successful as I can be with the Blue Jays.”

“All I’ve ever wanted was an opportunity to prove that I belong in this game, and that’s what I plan to do when I get down there, show exactly what I can do and what I can bring to an organization.”

The left-hander went 8-4 with a 2.72 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 14 starts and 89.1 innings pitched in 2021 for the Otters.

“The first time I saw Braden pitch, I knew he had a chance to do great things,” Otters pitching coach Max Peterson said. “One of the most competitive pitchers I’ve ever watched, didn’t matter how he felt or what kind of stuff he had that day, he was going to give you everything he had. We couldn’t be happier for him, he earned it.”

Scott finished the 2021 season winning his last two starts, combining to go 14 innings with 21 strikeouts, and allowing only one earned run.

He had four starts with 10 or more strikeouts – two with 10 and two with 12.

“We are very happy for Braden getting this opportunity with the Blue Jays,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “He certainly deserves it, and we wish him the best of luck with the Blue Jays organization.”

In his career with the Indiana Hoosiers, Scott posted a 3.25 ERA in 55.1 innings and 39 appearances, racking up 81 strikeouts.

Otters hitting coach Bobby Segal, also an alumnus of the Indiana University baseball program, stated, “Braden was awesome for us this past summer in Evansville. I had no doubts the former IU lefty was going to get a call from an affiliated club, just a matter of time.”

“I’d like to thank Andy, Max, my teammates, everyone within the Otters organization, and the Otters fans for their help and support throughout all of last season,” Scott added.

Scott is the second Otters player from the 2021 season to be signed to an affiliated organization. Left-handed starting pitcher Dalton Stambaugh was signed by the Chicago Cubs organization in June 2021.

Scott is the first Otter to sign with the Blue Jays organization since shortstop Scott Heying in 1998.

The Otters have sent 83 players to affiliated organizations out of Evansville.

The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.

The Otters play all home games at historic Bosse Field, located at 23 Don Mattingly Way in Evansville, Ind. Stay up to date with the Evansville Otters by visiting evansvilleotters.com, or follow the Otters on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

UE Women’s Golf Team Receives MVC Championship Rings

UE Women’s Golf Team Receives MVC Championship Rings

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – One of the most impressive accomplishments in recent University of Evansville athletics history was brought to the forefront on Saturday afternoon when the Purple Aces women’s golf team received their rings to commemorate their 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Championship.  The ceremony took place at halftime of the UE men’s basketball game at the Ford Center

Each member of the team took part in the design of the ring over the course of a process that took a few months to complete.  The final design of the ring is something the team is proud of and is one that will give them a keepsake to commemorate the accomplishment for the rest of their lives.

Over the course of the design process, the Aces players did not leave any stone unturned.  From examining all design options and possibilities to studying rings that were designed in previous years, the UE team put in the effort and the result is stunning.

Incorporating a snowflake into the design was a must for the girls.  On the final day of the MVC Championship, snow was falling throughout most of the day at Bogey Hills Country Club in Saint Charles, Missouri.  It was falling just as hard as it was at any other point when the teams finished the final round of play.  Evansville and UNI needed one final hole to decide the championship with the Aces coming home victorious – with the snow continuing to come down.

As a way to incorporate the snowflake into the sport, the side of the ring features a snowflake with golf clubs interlocked into the design.  That side of the ring features the name of each player/coach on the top and the Missouri Valley Conference logo on the bottom.

Utilizing both UE logos was another important aspect of the design.  With the Aces script logo being prevalent on most of the equipment and uniforms for the team, the mark was featured on the top of the ring with stones surrounding it.  The interlocking UE logo is featured on the other side of the ring along with the slogan “History Made”.  Evansville’s school colors were incorporated into the top of the ring with purple and orange stones circling it.

Members of the team were excited about the design as it encompassed the team aspect of the accomplishment.  It was not about any individual numbers or scores, it commemorated a team accomplishment and a moment that will be remembered not just at the University of Evansville, but around the entire MVC for many years to come.

At Saturday’s ceremony, the team was on hand including championship medalist Sophia Rohleder, Allison Enchelmayer, Carly Frazier, Taylor Keating, Alyssa McMinn, Caitlin O’Donnell and Mallory Russell.  Head coach John Andrews along with former head coach Jim Hamilton and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Fernando Garcia-Villegas also received rings.  Andrews was named the MVC Coach of the Year and would pass the honor along to Coach Hamilton.

Eagles Cruise Past Cardinals For Fifth Straight Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball cruised to an 86-51 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over visiting William Jewell College Saturday afternoon at Screaming Eagles Arena.

The No. 22 Screaming Eagles (17-3, 11-1 GLVC), winners of their last five games, used a 17-3 run to close the first period with a 28-10 lead and never looked back.
