as one of the five 2021 CMT Artists of the Year. For more information visit www.gabbybarrett.com.
John Morgan brings a blue-collar toughness to Country that’s pulled straight from the only life he
knows. Hailing from a tiny town called Sylva, deep in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina,
John Morgan grew up immersed in Bluegrass tradition and even toured the festival circuit each summer
in a family band, before diving into songwriting, inspired by six-string legends from Tony Rice to John
Mayer. More than a year after selling everything he had to follow his dream, an only-in-Nashville story
involving Uber drivers and impressive demos led to a writing session with Kurt Allison and Tully
Kennedy—two incredible songwriters and longtime bandmates of Aldean. That session led to the
superstar cutting eight songs written by John, including “If I Didn’t Love Youâ€. Aldean signed John to
Night Train Records, his imprint with BBR Music Group and his debut track, COLDEST BEER IN
TOWN was released in 2021. For more information visit www.johnmorganmusic.com.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Vincennes sophomore Connor VanLannen (Clinton, Ind.) took the mound for Sunday’s game of the Trailblazers three-game weekend set with the Cougars of Cleveland State Community College and did not allow a hit in his five innings of work.
The Trailblazers were led by their starting pitching and got some big at-bats at the plate but were ultimately swept in the third-game series 7-4, 4-1, 6-5.
The weekend series began Saturday with a doubleheader and VU wasted little time at the plate, with leadoff hitter Ethan Burdette (Linton, Ind.) beginning the season with a single.
Burdette would later score on a two RBI double by freshman Nick Williams (Alexandria, Ind.), giving VU the early 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Ryan Bartley (Tuscola, Ill.) had an RBI single in the fourth the brought home sophomore Colin Long (Evansville, Ind.) to increase the VU lead to 3-1.
Cleveland State would answer to grab the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run.
Vincennes evened the score in the fifth on a Kaden Elliott (New Albany, Ind.) RBI single that drove in Colton Evans (Henderson, Ky.) but the Cougars responded with a run in the fifth and a two in the sixth to take game one 7-4.
Sophomore Braedon Nichols (Sullivan, Ind.) got the game one start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on two hits and striking out two.
Sophomore Luke Osborn (Perryville, Ind.) pitching 2.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs on three hits, with one punch out.
The VU bats cooled off in game two Saturday, with the Blazers coming away with only three hits in the first four innings, including a pair of doubles by sophomore and Northern Kentucky signee Peyton Lane (New Paris, Ohio).
Lane would eventually drive in the Trailblazers only run of the game in the seventh on a sac fly that drove in freshman Kobe Bartlett (Rockport, Ind.)
Vincennes did get a really good pitching performance out of starter Kestler Harbuck (Brooksville, Fla.) who had a no-hitter through 3.2 innings. Harbuck was pulled from the game after giving up a pair of home runs, but only allowed two runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
Freshmen Eli Steimel (Sullivan, Ind.) and Dawson Blaylock (Eaton, Ohio) pitched the remaining 2.1 innings of relief. Combining to allow two runs on four hits with Steimel striking out two.
Game three Sunday began as a back-and-forth pitchers duel between VU’s Connor VanLannen and Cleveland State’s Bryce Jenkins.
Neither team had managed to score through the first five innings, with VanLannen not allowing a hit and only three Cougars to reach base.
Vincennes struck first in the sixth with back-to-back singles by Burdette and Long.
Kaden Elliott would later drive in a pair of runs on a single of his own and Kobe Bartlett gave Vincennes a 4-0 lead with an RBI double.
Cleveland State responded on their home field in the bottom half of the sixth, leading off the inning with a home run.
The Cougars would send 10 batter to the plate in the sixth and climb all the way back to take a 5-4 lead over the Trailblazers.
Vincennes would even the score in the eighth on a solo home run by Colton Evans but the Cougars would score in the bottom of the eighth and come away with the 6-5 win.
VanLannen ended his first game on the mound this season after throwing five innings, allowing no hits and striking out five.
Freshman Jake Stuteville (Rockport, Ind.) pitched well in relief, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.
“The biggest story of the weekend was our starters, who did a good job,†VU Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “We had a couple guys pitch well in relief. Another big story for us was our hitters swung the bats well against some tough quality pitching.â€
“Our three starters were really big for us this weekend,†Barney added. “They have got to sustain that all year to keep us in the game and if they do that it gives us a chance to win a lot of games this year.â€
“We were in all of the games and we just beat ourselves a little bit Saturday,†Barney said. “Today we struggled a little bit out of the bullpen. But our guys battled and fought in every game. We stuck with it and I told them after the game today if we can do that every game, then we will be fine.â€
“Our situational hitting was the difference in the games yesterday. In game one we were 3 for 9 with runners in scoring position and in game two we were 0 for 7 with a sac fly and an RBI. That’s the difference in those games and that’s the difference between winning and having a 7-4 game where we did come up with three big hits, but we had other opportunities where we could have scored runs.â€
“We expect big things out of our top of the lineup guys and they did this weekend. That’s what those guys are supposed to do, is step up and unfortunately we’ve got to step up a little bit more in key situations. But they were really good for us. We out hit Cleveland State in all three games and weren’t able to come away with a win. That doesn’t happen often.â€
“We’ve got to play good defense. Cleveland State capitalized on our mistakes when we gave them an extra out or two in an inning. They really made us pay for it, so defense and hitting with runners in scoring position were the two big differences in the games yesterday.â€
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. and INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Vincennes University Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams took part in a pair of meets over the weekend, in hopes to continue to improve and get closer to the qualifying mark in several events.
The weekend started with the Hoosier Hills Classic hosted by Indiana University on Friday.
The No. 23-ranked VU Men’s team was led Friday by the Distance Medley Relay team of Manamanya Opiew (Indianapolis, Ind.), Trenton Faulkner (Vincennes, Ind.), Ernest Momodu (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Mathew Keitany (Kenya), who placed third with a time of 10:50.41.
Freshman Jalen Bowman (Evansville, Ind.) came away with a podium spot, placing sixth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.96 seconds.
Sophomore Kyle Stewart (Evansville, Ind.) also came away with a top-eight finish, placing seventh in the long jump with a distance of 6.78 meters.
Freshman Yamar Lyons (Kalamazoo, Mich.) just missed the podium but came away with a ninth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 52.72 seconds.
The Vincennes women’s DMR team also held their own against some tough competition Friday.
The team of Kaitlyn Koenig, Chloe Knepp (Montgomery, Ind.), Brittany Page (Bicknell, Ind.) and Kyra Young (South Bend, Ind.) placed third with a time of 14:20.14.
Page would also come away with an eighth place finish in the 800 meters at 2:39.85 and Knepp placed ninth in the 400 meters at 1:01.05.
The VU athletes got to compete against some familiar faces Friday in Bloomington as former Trailblazers Ryan Golliher (Indiana State) and Anthony Campbell (UW-Milwaukee) were also in attendance.
Golliher placed fourth in the weight throw and Campbell placed fifth in the long jump for their respective schools.
“The highlight of the day Friday was Chloe and Yamar both setting personal bests in the 400 by over two seconds,†VU Track and Field Coach Marty Rogier said. “Jalen made the finals in the 60 and posted a quick time of 6.96. Kyle struggled to get on the board in the long jump. He felt he had a disappointing seventh place finish in an event he felt he should have won.â€
Saturday some of the VU athletes took the trip up to Indianapolis to take part in the Gerry England Invitational.
Vincennes dominated the men’s 800 meter race with three of the top four finishers.
Mathew Keitany paced the field to take the top spot at 2:00.34, just a fraction of a second ahead of teammate Manamanya Opiew at 2:00.58.
Trenton Faulkner would take fourth a second later at 2:02.16.
Keitany would also come away with a second-place finish in the men’s mile, ending with a time of 4:25.74.
“The distance runner had a very good day Saturday,†Rogier added. “Mathew set a new PR and was 0.2 seconds off qualifying for Nationals in the mile.â€
“Mathew, Manny and Trenton went 1-2-4 in the 800 and ran a very smooth race,†Rogier said. “Hope Laughlin (Olney, Ill.) ran a very competitive race in the 800 and Reed Lawless (Valparaiso, Ind.) capped off the day with a well planned race in the 3000. He finished 19th in a very fast paced race. Mason Harmes (Borden, Ind.) set a new PR again in both the weight throw and the shot put. He keeps improving every week.â€
submitted by State Repersemtive Cindy Ledbetter
One of our top priorities at the Statehouse is to protect Indiana’s children, and I’ve co-authored and supported legislation this session to further that goal. Â
According to the latest data from the Indiana Department of Child Services, out of 281 child deaths in 2020, 50 resulted from maltreatment by a caregiver, and 13 of these children had prior DCS involvement. I co-authored legislation to expand the state’s reporting on child deaths, which could be used to help children in need sooner and prevent tragedies. The bill would require additional data to be collected, including whether the child had any history with DCS, and whether abuse or neglect was substantiated. Collecting more information would allow us to identify risks sooner rather than later, ultimately saving young lives.
Any Hoosier who suspects a child is being abused or neglected is required by law to report it by calling the Indiana Department of Child Services’ Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-800-5556. Reports can be made anonymously 24/7.
To protect Hoosier mothers and their unborn, the Indiana House advanced legislation, which I co-authored, to expand Medicaid access for pregnant women. The bill would increase the ceiling on income requirements and extend the time frame for which they can receive coverage from 60 days to a full year. Multiple studies show that high-quality prenatal care has a profound effect on a child’s health for many years after birth. By expanding access to life-saving medical care to mothers, both before and after their pregnancies, we can better ensure newborn children are healthy.
For questions about prenatal care, the Mom’s Helpline connects Hoosiers to helpful resources at 1-844-MCH-MOMS (1-844-624-6667) or MCHMOMSHelpline@isdh.in.gov.
House lawmakers also advanced legislation, which I supported, to expand screening requirements for newborns. Every newborn in Indiana is screened for over 50 health disorders before leaving the hospital or within five days of home birth, which can help catch medical issues early on. Currently, adding new screenings requires legislative action, adding unnecessary delays to the process. Under this bill, a panel of medical experts could vet and add disorders to the state’s list, speeding up response times and potentially saving the lives of Hoosier newborns. Early treatment of these disorders can make all the difference for a newborn’s health.
To learn more about Indiana’s Newborn Screening Program, visit in.gov/health/gnbs.
These bills are currently being reviewed by the Senate. To watch as it moves through the legislative process, go to iga.in.gov.
There’s nothing more important than the health and safety of our state’s children, and I will continue to make this a top priority.
