Attorney General Todd Rokita Slams Biden Administration For Orwellian Assault On Fee Speech

0

AG Rokita Demands the Cancellation Of The DHS Disinformation Governance Board, Which Threatens Hoosiers And All Americans

Attorney General Todd Rokita today demanded that the Biden administration disband a new U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unit that would focus on censoring communications deemed deceptive, false, or misleading.

The so-called Disinformation Governance Board poses a direct threat to First Amendment freedom of speech, Attorney General Rokita said.

“The leftists controlling our federal government are shameless when it comes to their cult-like devotion to destroying Americans’ liberties,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Fortunately, here in Indiana and across the country, patriots stand prepared to defend our God-given rights. As attorney general, I’ll always uphold my solemn oath to lead the cause of liberty.”

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Attorney General Rokita and peers from 19 other states declare that the federal government must pull the plug on its Orwellian endeavor.

“The existence of the Disinformation Governance Board will inevitably have a chilling effect on free speech,” the letter states. “Americans will hesitate before they voice their constitutionally protected opinions, knowing that the government’s censors may be watching, and some will decide it is safer to keep their opinions to themselves.”

The letter further notes that the DHS has chosen as the board’s leader an individual who criticized parents as “disinformers” after the parents objected to the indoctrination of their children with Critical Race Theory.

“Even for the Biden administration,” Attorney General Rokita said, “this attack on free speech is egregious. At long last, have they no sense of decency?”

LEMONADE

GAVEL GAMUT By Jim Redwine

Liberals are upset that the leak from the U.S. Supreme Court may signal that the case of Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), may be overturned or, as is more likely, modified. Conservatives are upset there was a leak from the Supreme Court that may allow public pressure from Liberals to influence the Court to not modify Roe’s holdings.

Neither Roe v. Wade nor the case that followed it, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 505 U.S. 833 (1992), is before the Supreme Court for decision. They could be referred to and overturned or reaffirmed by the Court within its decision of the pending case of Dobbs v. Jackson, No. 19-1392 which will be decided in 2022. As there has not yet been an official decision in Dobbs, it does not have an official public citation.

Liberals celebrate the leak and abhor the substance of the draft opinion authored by conservative Justice Samuel Alito. Conservatives celebrate the preliminary opinion and abhor the leak. Both Liberals and Conservatives find reasons to attack the institution of the Third Branch of our democracy as they clamor for it to be fundamentally changed. Liberals want to “pack” the Court so as to dilute its current conservative majority. Conservatives want a vigorous investigation into the leak with the hope the public will be outraged if some left-leaning leaker is identified as the culprit.

I agree with Shakespeare’s character, Mercutio, in Act III, scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet when his imminent death results due to an irrational feud between the families of the lovers:

“A plague on both your houses!”

However, if we are to be constantly accosted by railings of both Liberals and Conservatives about the need for modifications in the United States Supreme Court, let us consider making some constructive changes. After all, no rational American wants to do away with the Court. We all know one of the main reasons our country has outlived every other constitutional democracy on earth is our equally competing three branches of government. We must support the maintenance of all three, including the Judicial Branch.

When it comes to the Judicial Branch, political commentators often assert it is non-political and must remain so. They are correct if they mean the actual decisions of the Court. No judge should allow political influence to affect his or her decision. But when it comes to maintaining the public’s confidence in the non-political basis of a judge’s decision, it is the processes of judicial selection and retention that are most important.

One reason the public believes the members of the Supreme Court are politically motivated is because the public has no influence on how the justices get their lifetime jobs nor any realistic way to remove them. Presidents are elected every four years with the possibility of only one more four-year term. Representatives are elected every two years and Senators are elected every six years. The public has a right to remove them. Supreme Court justices are nominated by one person, the President, as the President sees fit. The public’s influence is greatly attenuated, in fact, virtually non-existent.

At a minimum, the public should have the assurance that many of the most vital issues of their lives will not be at the mercy of the same five-member majority of the Supreme Court for an unknown period. Perhaps our current national furor could be a catalyst to, at least, set term limits for the Supreme Court justices. A ten-year term is what I suggest but the public, through its federal Legislature, should decide such issues. It is fair and in our own best interest in getting well-qualified justices who are willing to serve, to grant the retired justices generous life-time pensions once their term is up. But in return, the retired justices would agree to neither seek nor accept another judicial position ever again.

The possibility of term limits for the Supreme Court might help assuage the current calls by Liberals and Conservatives to radically control what must remain one of our three independent branches of government. Term limits is a better solution than a continuing loss of public confidence in and, perhaps, a loss of independence for, our Supreme Court. In other words, we do not want to make the same types of mistakes as did Romeo and Juliet in their final Act. We do not need to continue on our road toward possible suicide for our democracy.

Increasing Access To Care To Save LIves

Increasing Access To Care To Save Lives
In Indiana, we are working to improve the health of mothers and their babies and bring down our high maternal and newborn mortality rates.
With a new law I supported, more Hoosiers will be able to access important health benefits before, during, and after their pregnancies. By raising income requirements for Medicaid, more low-income Hoosiers will be able to receive critical medical care. This care will also be extended from a 60-day period to a full year of coverage.

According to a report from the Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee, 85% of pregnancy-associated deaths in Indiana occur postpartum. The report also found that only 44% of women who died of pregnancy-associated causes accessed prenatal care in the first trimester of their pregnancy.

Aces head into fun-filled weekend series against Illinois State

0
EVANSVILLE – Looking to continue its run of strong performance, the University of Evansville baseball team plays host to Illinois State for a three-game set on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville.

Previewing the Matchup: Illinois State

  • The Aces and Redbirds are meeting for the 125th time in series history with Illinois State owning a 69-54-1 advantage in the all-time series.
  • Evansville and Illinois State met five times last season, four during their regular season series in Normal, Ill. and once in the first game of the MVC Championship in Carbondale, Ill., with Illinois State taking four of the five meetings.
  • Entering the weekend, Evansville sits alone at the top of the MVC standings with a 9-3 mark in conference play, while the Redbirds are tied for fifth at 5-7 in Valley play.
  • The Aces have won eight of their last nine MVC contests, earning sweeps over Missouri State and Bradley. Evansville’s lone loss in its last nine Valley contests came in extra innings to Indiana State.

Getting a Boost

  • Comparing the 2021 seasons for Mark Shallenberger and Brent Widder to what they have produced so far in 2022 shows the hard work both have put in.
  • Shallenberger hit .258 with nine doubles, five homers, and 27 RBI a season ago and this season is currently hitting .373 with 15 doubles, nine homers, and an MVC-best 46 RBI.
  • Widder hit .246 last season with two homers and 17 RBI. Through 42 games this year, Widder is hitting .330 with seven home runs and 38 RBI, putting him top 10 in the MVC.

A Tale of Two Seasons

  • The Aces opened the season with a 3-10 record, but turned its season around with a series sweep of Tulane, going 21-8 since.
  • Prior to the Tulane series, the Aces were hitting just .248 at the plate. In the Tulane series and onward, UE is hitting .291.
  • The pitching staff has also seen big improvements dropping a 6.75 ERA prior to the trip to New Orleans down to a 4.86 ERA since, which would rank in the top 100 in the nation.

Kids and Family Day | Saturday, 2 PM

  • Kids (17 and under) get in free to Saturday’s game.
  • Inflatables, face painting, free popsicles, and more!
