COMMUNITY ICON WILLIAM “BILL” BUTTERFIELD PASSES

0
William “Bill” Butterfield, 94, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. An Evansville native, son of the late Sidney and Ruth (Lane) Butterfield,

Bill loved and served the community that raised him. To that end, he started businesses, chaired charitable boards, and fought hard to keep Evansville and all of Indiana a safe haven for the unborn. An early advocate for Civil Rights, Bill cared that the rights of all people, born and unborn, were protected, and he faithfully and passionately lived out that belief. Even in his last weeks of life, his family and friends were receiving emails from him keeping them informed on local and state issues of importance. His faith in Jesus Christ and deep love for his family inspired him, and he will be fondly remembered for his heart of gold and engaging sense of humor.

Bill attended Bosse high school and served as the president of the Student Council for 2 years. He received his undergraduate degree at Purdue University where he was president of the senior class, president of the alumni class, president of Delta Rho Kappa, a Purdue Science Scholastic Honorary, graduated with the highest distinction, and was a member of the Century Club. He received his master’s degree at Harvard Business School with the HBS Honorary.

As a businessman, Bill left his mark as the prior owner/president of Tri-State Athletic Club, Tri-State Satellite, Smith and Butterfield, Ambassador Travel, Snap Photo, and Evansville Basketball Academy. As a humanitarian and philanthropist, he served as chairman of the board for Vanderburgh County Right to Life, WNIN Public Broadcasting, Junior Achievement of Southwestern Indiana, United Way of Southwestern Indiana, and the March of Dimes Polio Campaign. He also served as a board member for Life Issues Institute and Indiana Right to Life, campaign chairman for the United Way of Southwestern Indiana, and the president and treasurer of the Mayor’s Human Relations Committee. He received the Vanderburgh County Right to Life Notable Achievement Award and the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award.

Bill loved sports, particularly Purdue University sports! An avid tennis and basketball player, he was a champion athlete: a member of the 1945 Bosse High School state championship team, member of the 1946 Indiana Basketball High School All Stars, a Purdue University basketball letterman, played one year in the National Professional Basketball League and defeated the Harlem Globe Trotters, and he was a member of the Robert’s Stadium Basketball Hall of Fame. He served on the board of Evansville Area Tennis Patrons and was chairman of the board for the National Indoor Tennis Association.

Keeping his family close was a high priority for Bill. He blessed his children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren with frequent trips together and family reunions so that they could know and love each other as he knew and loved them. He is survived by a son, James (Barbara) Butterfield of Evansville, IN; daughters, Kathy (Rev. David) Brooks of Manchester, NH, Betsy (Fred) McGarvey of Indianapolis, IN, Sarah (Gerd) Budden of Lake Oswego, OR., Tracy (Phil) Kessler of Evansville, IN, Rhonda (Tim) Dame of Evansville, IN, Kelly Butterfield of Evansville, IN, and Jama (Jeff) Bannister of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Sarah Cox, Jon Brooks, Courtney Hahn, Daniel Brooks, Caleb Brooks, Andrea Prisk, Megan McGarvey, Elizabeth McGarvey, Anna Budden, Sidney Waddington, Amy Giorgio, William Brooks, Sarah Morris, Jan Budden, Logan Dame, Katarina Budden, David Butterfield, Hilary Scott, Christian Budden, Mackenzie Santos, Harrison Parchment, Mia Parchment, Bjorn Budden, Eric Budden, and Vivecka Heinke; 37 great-grandchildren; sister, Dr. Mary Butterfield of Pompano Beach, FL.; nephew, William Thomas; and nieces, Mary Thomas Lentz, Julie Thomas Cohen, and Sarah Thomas Petro.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Thomas; and his former wife, Connie Butterfield.

CenterPoint Energy Focuses On Safety, Encourages Energy Efficiency As Temperatures Rise

0

Evansville – June 13, 2022 – The Evansville region is anticipating temperatures in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees this week, with heat indexes reaching 100 to 115 degrees. CenterPoint Energy has a long-standing policy of halting disconnections for customers with past due balances during extreme weather situations.

“For the safety of our customers, CenterPoint Energy will monitor the weather and adjust our disconnects of Indiana electric customers with outstanding balances in accordance with our long-standing policy,” said Richard Leger, Senior Vice President, Indiana Electric.

Customers with past due balances are encouraged to contact CenterPoint Energy at 800-277-1376 to discuss payment options and resources available to avoid service disruption. Extended payment arrangements will continue to be offered to customers needing assistance.

CenterPoint Energy urges customers to stay safe and consider ways to conserve energy to help manage summer energy bills. Extreme temperatures cause higher usage and can also put a strain on customers’ cooling units. CenterPoint Energy is encouraging customers to be mindful of their usage and offers the following energy efficiency tips to reduce bills:

  • Set thermostats two to three degrees higher; set programmable thermostats to higher temperatures when no one is home.
  • Turn off non-essential electric appliances, equipment and lights.
  • Minimize use of major appliances, such as stoves, dishwashers, washers and dryers, if you must use them, choose the late evening.
  • Avoid opening refrigerators or freezers more than necessary.
  • Use microwaves for cooking instead of an electric range or oven.
  • Close your blinds or curtains to keep sunlight out. The sun’s rays will warm your home and cause additional air conditioning use.
  • Set the direction of your ceiling fan to counterclockwise in the summer so that it will circulate cool air. With this cooling effect, you can raise the thermostat three to four degrees and feel just as comfortable.

CenterPoint Energy continues to monitor temperatures and adjust disconnections for non-payment of electric service once temperatures moderate. Disconnects for natural gas customers with past due balances will continue as scheduled.

IDEM Issues Ozone Air Quality Action Day For June 14, 2022

0

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is declaring an ozone Air Quality Action Day in Southwest Indiana for Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Who might this affect?

Kids

  • Older adults
  • Those with respiratory diseases

Take precautions, such as limiting physical exertion outdoors.

Follow these simple pollution prevention tips to reduce emissions from daily activities:

  • Carpool, walk, bike, or use public transportation when possible.
  • Refuel vehicles after dusk.
  • Avoid excess idling and drive-through windows.
  • Consolidate trips and avoid fast-starts.
  • Postpone using gasoline-powered garden equipment or mowing the lawn until late evening, when temperatures are cooler.
  • Work from home to reduce vehicle emissions, if your employer provides the option.
  • Use energy efficient lighting and appliances recommended by the Energy Star Program.
  • Turn off appliances and lights when not in use to reduce emissions from energy production.
  • Adjust your thermostat by turning it up in the summer and down in the winter to reduce emissions from energy production.
  • Recycle to reduce emissions related to producing paper, plastic, glass bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard.
  • Use “low VOC” or “zero VOC” paint and cleaning products.
  • Consider burning gas logs instead of wood to reduce smoke.
  • Avoid burning clean wood waste such as leaves and brush. If possible, recycle yard waste by shredding or chipping it at home or use a registered collection site. Never burn trash.

Air Quality Discussion

Mostly sunny skies with south winds and temperatures are already at 80 degrees with a few light showers.  Hot and increasingly humid over the next 3 days with highs in the upper 90’s and lows in the upper-70’s.  Winds will be southwesterly through Wednesday, 6-10 MPH tomorrow and 3-6 MPH Wednesday. A strong upper level ridge will influence our weather Tuesday and Wednesday with a Heat Advisory lasting until at least late Wednesday.  A surface high will be over eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.  Heat indexes may rise to 110 degrees. On Thursday a trough moves over the Great Lakes trailing a cold front which may bring a few showers.

Logan Belz Named Associate AD For Revenue Generation

Belz Joins The Purple Aces From CSU Bakersfield

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville Director of Athletics Ziggy Siegfried has announced the hiring of Logan Belz as the Associate Athletics Director for Revenue Generation.

“We are excited to have Logan join the athletics senior leadership team.  He is an individual that will make an instant positive impact on our department, and our community,” Siegfried exclaimed.  “He has an unmatched work ethic, a passion for supporting student-athletes, and he is an individual that provides a high level of service to everyone he encounters. I have worked with Logan for several years and I can tell you that the Purple Aces got better with him joining our team!”

Belz will develop and execute strategies for revenue generation, foster relationships with constituents, and will be a member of the Director of Athletics’ executive leadership team. Belz will also serve as a sports administrator for multiple sports.

“I want to thank Dr. Ziggy Siegfried for inviting me to be a part of The University of Evansville Purple Aces family! The Purple Aces have a long history of athletic success. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and help create an amazing atmosphere at all of our athletics events, Belz said.  “I’m excited to get out into our community and get to know Purple Aces alumni, friends, fans, and longtime supporters that love the Purple & Orange. Our coaches, scholar-athletes, and constituents are the lifeblood of our Purple Aces program and I’ll be here for them to listen and learn.”

“I will go to sleep and wake up thinking about the Purple Aces every day and work tirelessly to assist in creating amazing memories for our fanbase. The Purple Aces are on the rise and I’m looking forward to getting to work and grinding for our community.”

Belz joins the Aces program from Cal State Bakersfield where he worked for Siegfried during his tenure with the Roadrunners.  Most recently, Belz was the Assistant Athletics Director for Special Projects.  He joined the department in July of 2015 and held other positions in revenue generation, ticketing and operations.  While at CSU Bakersfield, Belz broke revenue records and CSUB saw an all-time high for season and group tickets for all eight ticketed sports.

He also spearheaded many gameday fan engagement projects that resulted in sellouts for different sporting events. Those projects included Men’s Basketball Education Day, Men’s Basketball Agriculture Night, and “Runners On The Road” bus trips to different contests. He also assisted in fundraising for numerous sport-specific fundraisers such as Hot Stove, which benefited the CSUBs baseball program, Evening with Coach Rod Barnes, which benefited the Men’s Basketball program, the Tip-Off Luncheon, which benefited both basketball programs, and Brains of Bakersfield, which benefited the Men’s Soccer program.

His efforts were equally impressive in women’s sports at CSUB.  He led initiatives that broke ticket revenue and attendance records in ticket sports including women’s basketball, softball, women’s soccer, and volleyball.  Multiple community initiatives were introduced that connected the Bakersfield community to the programs.

Before making the move to Bakersfield, Belz worked at the University of Memphis as an Athletics Development Assistant.  He assisted with the 901 campaign that helped to steward new members and donors while contributing to multiple facets of managing gameday operations for the development staff.

His first position in California came at UC Berkeley where he worked from 2013-to 14 as a Development Assistant/Event Ambassador for the Cal Alumni Association while serving the Golden Bears’ Athletics Department as an Olympic Sport Operations Assistant.

As a student at Memphis, Belz was the Head Manager for the men’s basketball team for over two seasons.  He earned a BS in Sports and Leisure Management from Memphis in 2014 before obtaining his Master of Public Administration (MPA) from CSU Bakersfield in 2017.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

Josh Pastner, Head Men’s Basketball Coach – Georgia Tech

“Logan did an incredible job for us at Memphis!  He is so good with people and he really made a positive impact on so many at Memphis including all of our student-athletes. I know he will make a fast and significant impact there for the fans at Evansville.”

Dr. Adam Walker, Executive Associate Athletics Director, Administration – University of Memphis

“I was fortunate to be able to offer Logan his first role in college athletics. I knew the first week Logan would be successful in our industry. His shear passion, energy and positive attitude is infectious. He does whatever is asked and goes above and beyond. I have enjoyed watching his continued accent and know he will continue to be successful at Evansville. He will be a game-changer.”

Rod Barnes, Head Men’s Basketball Coach – California State University, Bakersfield – 2001 Naismith College Coach of the Year:

“Congratulations to Logan Belz on the new position as Associate Athletics Director for Revenue Generation. This is such a wonderful opportunity for him in his collegiate athletics career. CSU Bakersfield’s loss will be the University of Evansville’s gain and I know he’ll do a fantastic job over there. His expertise will fit well with this extraordinary opportunity.”

“Watching his actions each day proved to everyone he was committed to growing our fan base and improving our student-athletes experience. I am confident he will do great things for the Purple Aces. We will miss him here at CSU Bakersfield but great things are ahead for him at Evansville.”
