USDA Approves Indiana’s Waiver to Remove Sugary Drinks from Taxpayer-Funded SNAP Benefits

INDIANAPOLIS – Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Brooke Rollins signed Indiana’s waiver to remove sugary soft drinks and candy from the taxpayer-funded nutrition assistance program, SNAP.

“More taxpayer-funded SNAP dollars are spent on sugary drinks and candy than on fruits and vegetables. Indiana is proud to lead the way in the Make America Healthy Again agenda by making this common sense move to return the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to its intended purpose: nutrition.” — Governor Mike Braun

Soda is the number one commodity purchased with SNAP benefits. Purchases of sugary drinks, desserts, and candy exceed the combined sales of fruits and vegetables on SNAP. Children enrolled in SNAP consume 43% more sugary drinks than non-SNAP recipients with similar incomes.

Indiana was among the first states in the country to apply for this waiver to remove soft drinks and candy from SNAP benefits.

At the event rolling out Governor Braun’s Make Indiana Healthy Again initiative, HHS Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr said:

“I urge every governor across America to follow your lead by signing similar executive orders in their states to improve nutrition standards in SNAP, increase transparency around food dyes and additives, implement physical fitness tests in schools, expand farm-to-school programs, and embrace the full scope of your transformative health agenda. Together, we can Make America Healthy Again.”

Broker accused of defrauding Hoosier investors would lose license under action taken by Attorney General Todd Rokita

Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed a 29-count administrative complaint against the real estate broker license of Avon resident, Jeremy Tucker, who is alleged to have used at least 27 unauthorized signatures on mortgages and promissory notes in furtherance of a scheme to defraud investors of millions of dollars.

Jeremy Tucker falsified documents, overleveraged dilapidated properties and exploited his status as a licensed broker to gain investors’ trust, the complaint alleges. Attorney General Rokita’s office is seeking permanent revocation of Mr. Tucker’s license.

“We want to root out this kind of fraudulent misconduct wherever it occurs, and we want to hold perpetrators accountable,” Attorney General Rokita said. “It’s all part of our mission of protecting Hoosiers and upholding the rule of law.”

Attorney General Rokita thanked his team for their work on this case.

“This action represents great collaborative work from two sections within our Consumer Protection Division,” he said. “Staff from Professional Licensing Enforcement and their colleagues in the Homeowner Protection Unit have demonstrated the great value of teamwork in the arena of public service.”

Jeremy Tucker and related companies and individuals are defendants in at least two dozen civil cases filed throughout the State of Indiana in which investors claim that they were not paid back on their notes or that they were otherwise defrauded by Mr. Tucker’s property flipping scheme. Investors and businesses – like consumers – can be taken advantage of in fraudulent, unfair or abusive transactions.

Indiana State Suicide Prevention Plan Crisis Services Workgroup Listening Session Recording

The Division of Mental Health and Addiction is currently working to complete the Indiana State Suicide Prevention Plan and has been holding a series of workgroup listening sessions to inform that process. The Crisis Services Workgroup held a listening session on May 13,2025, which served as an opportunity for community members, stakeholders, and experts in the field to share their insights and priorities related to suicide prevention crisis services efforts.

The Crisis Services workgroup is focused on working toward a comprehensive, integrated crisis system across the state, including building the capacity to answer the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline calls and texts in Indiana, support for mobile crisis teams, and diversifying the availability of crisis stabilization facilities. Other capacity and systems work might include crisis workforce development, enhanced partnerships, and technology for improved coordination and communication.

Subject Drowns After Fleeing Police

On 5/24/2025, officers were requested to Marina Pointe at 850 LST Dr about a stolen vehicle report. While the report was being completed, the suspect returned to the scene. The suspect fled toward a tree line as officers approached. The suspect then fell down an embankment into the water. The suspect was observed struggling to swim before going under the water.

An EPD officer entered the water to locate and rescue the suspect. Due to poor lighting and water conditions, the suspect could not be located. The Evansville Fire Department (EFD) was contacted for a water rescue. EFD water rescue located the suspect after searching for multiple hours.

It was determined that the suspect was deceased. EPD commends the EFD for the measures taken on this difficult and heartbreaking recovery.

Based on the location of the recovery, the death investigation will be handled by Henderson, Kentucky.

The suspect’s identity will not be released at this time.

Trailblazers sign versatile hitter Ava Terrell to 2025 recruiting class

VINCENNES, Ind. – The four-time defending Region 24 Champion Vincennes University volleyball program announced this week the signing of five-foot-11 middle blocker/opposite hitter Ava Terrell to the Blazers 2025 recruiting class.

“Ava showed interest in coming to VU,” VUVB Head Coach Gary Sien said. “She’s a good player, person and student. Ava cut back on some of her activities this year in order to focus on her academics. That’s exceptional. She is from Delaware County, which is a big time area for volleyball in Indiana. That’s an area that we, of course, want to recruit. It has been quite a while since we have had students from there.”

“With Ava, she went to Yorktown High School and then her senior year she moved to Wapahani High School,” Sien added. “Those are two powerhouses in Indiana for volleyball. She’s been a part of two very strong high school volleyball programs and she plays for Munciana, which is one of the top clubs in Indiana. Ava is someone who comes in with great experience and great training as a player. Ava is also coming in as another player who can play multiple positions. She can play both right side and middle.”

Terrell comes to Vincennes University after finishing her high school career at Wapahani High School in Selma, Ind.

Terrell is originally from Yorktown but transferred to Wapahani High School for her senior season where she helped guide the Raiders to a 28-5 record this past season.

Terrell closed out her senior season with a total of 36 kills, 24 aces, 14 digs and nine blocks in 16 matches played, earning the ‘Competitor Award’.

Terrell helped guide Wapahani to the 2024 Conference Championship, reaching the Sectional Championship match as well as winning the Delaware County Championship.

Terrell also helped the Raiders win the Wapahani Invitational and finished second at the Leo Invitational facing some of the top 4A teams in the state.

Terrell also played for the Munciana Volleyball Club.

“After going to Yorktown for her whole life and then transferring her senior year, some of Ava’s goals were to be the best teammate and supporter of Wapahani volleyball and to show and prove to everyone what a great improved player she really is,” Wapahani Head Coach Valorie Wells said. “Her confidence grew so much from the first time meeting her. Her main goal was to just love volleyball again. She did that and achieved the biggest goal of them all, to play college volleyball.”

“I am so thrilled to know she is going to pursue studies at Vincennes University,” Wells added. “It has been her dream to play in college and that’s all she has talked about. First meeting Ava, that was her goal and she achieved that. I am so proud of her and excited to see what she does in the future.”

“Ava has that first contact passing skill, so as far as potential versatility Ava brings, it’s not just in the two positions I mentioned, we might also try having Ava play outside on the other pin,” Sien said. “She’s just such a well-rounded athlete. She has the passing ability and the front row skills. Played at a pretty high level in both high school and club.”

“I’m very excited about this group we have coming in this year,” Sien added. “I have said before that if the season started today, I would be very comfortable. However, we are still not done so we could even be better once we get one or two more players added.”

“We just want to be ready because now the Region has expanded out and is much larger,” Sien said. “We’ve got 18 Region games this season and we know that we are always going to get everyone’s best efforts. I don’t see any games on our schedule that are going to be ‘easy’. So we just want to be a complete team to be able to meet that higher level of competition.”

“Of course we will be going for our fifth straight Region Championship this season,” Sien added. “And we would obviously like to make it a decisive win. After that our goal is to be at our best at the end as we get into the District Tournament and make a run at going to the National Tournament. It’s always the same challenges every year and I never get tired of it. As a coach, I am ready to meet all of those challenges. But I am going to support the people who can help me get there. We treat recruiting as an invitation to come help us get there and if you accept that, then there’s a responsibility and accountability that you are going to take upon. So we’re very excited about this upcoming year and this is always an exciting time for our program.”

Ava is the daughter of Brian and Natalie Terrell and she plans to major in Business Management at Vincennes University.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department is excited to welcome Ava Terrell to the 2025 Trailblazer recruiting class.

 

Otters squeeze out series opening victory

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters (6-7) beat the division leading Lake Erie Crushers (9-3) in a pitchers duel Friday night, 4-3.

After a series full of offense against Schaumburg, the Otters’ pitching staff delivered in the first of a three game set against the Crushers.

Evansville sent out Adrian Montilva for his second start of the season and he did not disappoint. He began his outing by sending the opening three batters he saw back to the dugout.

Evansville was able to score in the opening frame for the second night in a row. An Alain Camou single started it off and he was later driven in on a JT Benson single.

Montilva continued his brilliance through three innings, keeping the Crushers scoreless.

In the home half of the third inning, LJ Jones led the offense off with a walk. He made it to second base on another single by Benson. After a fielder’s choice, Jones scored on a wild pitch to put the Otters up 2-0.

Montilva surrendered a solo home run in the fourth and was relieved after the fifth inning, the Otters leading 2-1. He finished his brilliant start with five innings pitched, two hits allowed, one run allowed, three walks and four strikeouts.

The score remained the same until the seventh frame when Lake Erie was able to tie the game on a passed ball.

Evansville responded in the bottom half of the seventh scoring runs on RBI singles from Pavin Parks and Keenan Taylor.

The two-run advantage was cut in half in the top of the eighth. The Otters escaped the inning when a double play with the bases loaded halted the rally.

Evansville called upon Nate Wohlgemuth in the ninth, where he earned his second save of 2025. He struck out two and stranded the tying run to close the door on the game.

The Otters look to clinch their second straight series in tomorrow’s game against the Crushers with a 6:35 p.m. CT start time. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. for Racing Day!
