August 14 – August 20

The Week in Indiana History

1833      Benjamin Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio.  He became an attorney and moved to Indianapolis.  He served in the Civil War and earned the rank of Brigadier General.  In 1888, he waged a “front porch” campaign from his home on Delaware Street and was elected President of the United States.

1911     Over 200 Statehouse workers enjoyed a watermelon feast hosted by State Treasurer William H. Vollmer.  The Indianapolis Starreported 100 Knox County melons “bore the brunt of the attack.”

1933     Dr. Dorothy C. Stratton was named the first full-time Dean of Women at Purdue University.  She saw the enrollment of women increase from 500 to more than 1400.  Three modern female residence halls were built.  During World War II, she was commissioned the first director of the Women’s Reserve of the U.S. Coast Guard.

willkie

1940     Elwood, Indiana, made national news as Wendell L. Willkie accepted the Republican nomination for President. Over 250,000 people crowded into Willkie’s hometown on a day that saw the temperature rise to 102. The Pennsylvania Railroad ran 29 extra trains that day. Willkie waged an energetic campaign but failed to prevent President Franklin D. Roosevelt from winning a third term in November.

Janis1968      Janis Joplin performed on the main stage of the ballroom at Indiana Beach in Monticello. The lead singer for a rock band called “Big Brother and the Holding Company,” she was still unknown to most of the audience.  Her fame began to grow the next year at the music festival in Woodstock, New York.

1972     The 1972 Indiana State Fair presented a wide variety of popular shows, automobile contests, animal competitions, and other entertainments.  In live appearances, famous stars included David Cassidy, Mike Douglas, Lynn Anderson, Johnny Cash, Sonny Bono, and Cher Bono.  Cher is the only one who is still alive these 50 years later.

Evansville comeback attempt falls short in Joliet

0

JOLIET, Ill. – The Evansville Otters fell behind in the fourth and never recovered, falling to the Joliet Slammers 4-2.

The scoring commenced in the fourth when the Slammers used a Matt Feinstein solo home run to jump ahead.

Joliet got at Evansville starter Justin Watland in the sixth, cashing in on a pair of one-out walks when JP Fullerton drove both in with an RBI double to right center. Immediately after, another run came across with an RBI single from Kyle Jacobson.

Jacob Bowles entered the game to complete the sixth inning for Evansville, grabbing the final out within the next at-bat.

The Otters finally struck in the seventh as Brody Tanksley brought in a run with an RBI double to right field.

In the eighth, Evansville tried at the comeback attempt once more. Elijah MacNamee brought in the final Otters run on a fielder’s choice groundout.

Joliet closer Tyler Jay entered in the ninth, shutting down Evansville in order to earn a save.

The win belonged to Cam Aufderheide, his seventh of the season. He allowed just one run on five hits in his 6.2 innings of work. Justin Watland received the loss, dropping him to 4-4 on the season. All four Joliet runs belonged to him.

Tanksley and Steven Sensley both secured multi-hit days for Evansville. Miles Gordon’s hit streak hit 20 games with a single in the second inning.

Evansville continues their road trip Saturday night with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at Duly Medical Group Field in Joliet. Audio-only coverage is available for free on the Evansville Otters YouTube page.

Conagra Brands, Inc., Recalls Frozen Beef Products Due to Misbranding and Undeclared Allergens

FSIS Announcement

WASHINGTON, July 30, 2022 – Conagra Brands, Inc., a Russellville, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 119,581 pounds of frozen beef products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains egg, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label. The products are labeled as beef and broccoli but contain orange chicken. These items were produced on May 26 and May 27, 2022. The following products are subject to recall [view labels]:

  • 22-oz. plastic bag packages containing “P.F. CHANG’S HOME MENU BEEF & BROCCOLI” with lot code “5006 2146 2012” and “BEST BY MAY 21 2023”.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P115” on the side panel above the nutrition facts. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and impact only the P.F. Chang’s Home Menu Beef & Broccoli product listed. It does not include any product sold at P.F. Chang’s restaurants.

The problem was discovered when the producing establishment notified FSIS that it received two consumer complaints that the beef and broccoli package contained a chicken-based product.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution lists will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the Conagra Brands Consumer Care line at (800) 280-0301 or Consumer.Care@conagra.com. Members of the media with questions about the recall can contact Daniel Hare, Senior Director of Communications, Conagra Brands, Inc., at (312) 549-5355 or Daniel.Hare@conagra.com.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or live chat via Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Consumers can also browse food safety messages at Ask USDA or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov. For consumers that need to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.

Wes Carroll Signs Contract Extension

0
EVANSVILLE – Following Evansville’s best season in eight years, University of Evansville Director of Athletics Dr. Kenneth “Ziggy” Siegfried has announced a contract extension for Aces head baseball coach Wes Carroll.
“Our baseball program is on the rise under the leadership of Coach Wes Carroll! He represents what it means to be a Purple Ace, and I know how much pride he takes in wearing Evansville across his chest,” said Siegfried. “I want to congratulate Wes on this well-deserved extension, and I want to thank him for his commitment to our student-athletes, the Purple Aces’ Community, and to all those that have come before us.”
The 2022 season was a special one for the Aces, finishing second in The Valley after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll and racking up a 32-24 record and a 14-6 mark in MVC action. For the success of the team, Carroll was named MVC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, last earning the honor in 2014.
“I want to thank our Athletic Director Ziggy Siegfried and President Pietruszkiewicz for the opportunity to lead the baseball program for many years to come,” said Carroll on the extension. “We have accomplished a lot over the past 14 years but I feel like the Aces Baseball program is primed to take another big step. Thank you to all former and current student-athletes for building the foundation of our future.
I take a lot of pride in representing the city of Evansville and the University of Evansville as its Head Baseball Coach. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity.”A Tri-State native and 2001 graduate of the University of Evansville, Carroll has helped usher the program into a new era with the renovations to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium, completed in 2020. Since the installation of turf and the renovations to the stadium, the Aces are 65-62, including a 38-23 mark at Braun Stadium.
2023 will represent Carroll’s 15th at the helm of the Aces program, where the 2001 UE graduate has amassed 352 victories, the second-most in Evansville history and also second among active MVC coaches.
Over the last two seasons, Carroll has produced numerous MVC awards including the 2022 Valley Pitcher of the Year and 14 MVC postseason honorees, while leading UE to back-to-back seasons above .500 for the first time since 2015-16.
