FSIS Issues Public Health Alert For Ground Beef Products Due To Possible E. Coli O157:H7 Contamination

AUGUST 19, 2022

WASHINGTON August 18, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert due to concerns that specific ground beef products may be adulterated with E. coli O157:H7. A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase. The “Hawaii Big Island Beef” brand ground beef products were produced on August 8, 2022. The following products are subject to the public health alert [view labels]:

  • 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Ground Beef (80) Fine 1#/pkg” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “134R1”.
  • 1-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Ground Beef (Ln) Fine 1#/pkg” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “135R1”.
  • 2-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Ground Beef (80) Fine 2#/pkg” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “134R2”.
  • 10-lb. bags containing “Ground Beef (80) Fine 10# Poly Bag” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “0134P10”.
  • 10-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Ground Beef (75) Fine 10# Vac Seal” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “130R10”.
  • 10-lb. vacuum-sealed packages containing “Ground Beef (80) Fine 10# Vac Seal” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “134R10”.
  • 40-lb. box containing four 10-lb chubs of “Ground Beef (80) Fine 10#” with “Packed 08/08/22” and “Lot 220808” on the label and case code “0134”.

The products bear the establishment number “EST. 1063” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail and restaurant locations in Hawaii.

The problem was discovered by FSIS during an assessment of the establishment’s production records associated with a sample that tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products.

Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps 2-8 days (3-4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5 years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen, and only consume ground beef that has been cooked to a temperature of 160 F. The only way to confirm that ground beef is cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature, https://www.fsis.usda.gov/safetempchart.

Media and consumers with questions regarding the public health alert can contact Matt Fornoff, General Manager of Hawaii Beef Producers, LLC, at (808) 776-1109.

Consumers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888-674-6854) or live chat via Ask USDA from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Consumers can also browse food safety messages at Ask USDA or send a question via email to MPHotline@usda.gov. For consumers that need to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at https://foodcomplaint.fsis.usda.gov/eCCF/.

Vanderburgh County Farm Recognized With Hoosier Homestead Awards

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2022) – The longstanding Martin Farm in Vanderburgh County recently received Hoosier Homestead Centennial and Sesquicentennial awards for being in operation since 1858, according to State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka) and State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville)

“Since before the Civil War, the Martin family farm has served Hoosiers,” Hostettler said. “Dedicated farmers like these helped make Vanderburgh County what it is today.”

The Martin Farm was among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.

“Agriculture contributes so much to our state and communities,” Tomes said. “Operating for over 150 years is an incredible accomplishment, and I applaud the Martin Farm for putting in such hard work and truly standing the test of time.”

Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards. Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.

Evansville rides big fifth inning to victory

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Evansville Otters put up a six-run fifth inning to defeat the Windy City ThunderBolts Wednesday night, 6-4.

Windy City immediately found themselves ahead in the game in the first inning, capitalizing on an error from J.R. Davis to score the opening run.

On the next at-bat, Peyton Isaacson sent a three-run home run over the right field wall to bump the advantage to 4-0.

From there, the game stood still into the middle innings as starters Ryan O’Reilly and Justin Miller began to settle in.

Finally, the Otters broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Zach Biermann opened the scoring with an RBI single, bringing in Davis.

A few batters later, Andy Armstrong drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Evansville to within two.

Bryan Rosario tied the game at four with a two-run single later in the inning. Armstrong also scored on the play due to a throwing error, giving Evansville a 5-4 lead.

The lead grew once more in the next at-bat as Elijah MacNamee brought in the sixth run with an RBI single.

After the big Evansville inning, the bullpens got involved and the game returned to quick innings. As the ninth inning began, Evansville brought on Logan Sawyer to grab the save. Sawyer earned his league-leading 19th save after retiring the side in order.

The win went to Ryan O’Reilly, his sixth of 2022. He allowed four runs (none earned) on six hits in his six complete innings. Justin Miller received the loss for Windy City, allowing five runs on three hits. The Otters were out-hit in the contest 6-5.

The series concludes Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Bosse Field. Audio-only coverage is available on the Otters YouTube page, while the paid video stream is available via FloBaseball.
