BURTON: ‘SB 178 CREATES A PATHWAY OF POSSIBILITY’

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, March 17, Senate Bill (SB) 178  passed the House without amendments and is now advancing toward a final vote in the House. SB 178 would recognize natural gas and propane as clean energy sources in Indiana.

State Rep. Alex Burton (D-Evansville) released the following statement on the bill’s passage:

“By recognizing natural gas and propane as clean energy sources, we are opening a path of possibility that must be pursued. In Evansville and much of Southwest Indiana, residents have faced the highest utility bills in the nation for the past 16 years. With these new definitions in place, I will advocate for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to consider the Evansville area as a recipient of funding, particularly from the $20 billion in project funding that was recently canceled.

“Reducing utility costs for Hoosiers is a top priority, and this legislation could provide the framework needed for Southwest Indiana to finally see some relief. It’s time to move beyond discussion and take steps—like this one—to offer real utility bill relief to our communities.”

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A busy schedule of matches is on the slate this spring for the University of Evansville volleyball team as head coach Zach Weinberg has announced the spring schedule for the Purple Aces.

“This spring slate will challenge us in exactly the ways we need to be challenged,” Weinberg said. “As we try to find our new identity as a team and get used to playing in the new systems the staff is asking the players to execute, we’re excited to see what it looks like with an opponent on the other side of the net.”

On Saturday, March 22, the Aces travel to Franklin, Tenn. for the College Spring Tourney at Alliance Volleyball Club.  UE faces Middle Tennessee State and 11:15 a.m. before facing Austin Peay at 1:15 p.m. and Chattanooga at 2:30 p.m.  Admission for this event will be $5.

Evansville will be inside Meeks Family Fieldhouse on Wednesday, March 26 to face USI.  Match time is 6 p.m. and admission will be $7.  Proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the UE volleyball program.  Two matches are on the schedule on Saturday, March 29 when the Aces travel to Bowling Green, Ky.  After facing Bellarmine at 2 p.m., UE faces Western Kentucky at 3 p.m.

In its final spring match, UE will travel across town to face USI inside Liberty Arena on Tuesday, April 15.  That match is set to begin at 6 p.m.

“I’m thrilled that the community will have a chance to see their new-look Aces Volleyball team in the friendly confines of Meeks Family Fieldhouse this spring,” Weinberg added. “I believe our fans are going to be incredibly proud of the work these student-athletes have put in so far this spring, and they get their chance to see what we’ve been doing up close and personal! I hope everyone will join us for a night of fun, competition, and great volleyball. I can’t wait to meet all of our fans on March 26th in Meeks!”

USI Women’s Basketball selected for 2025 WNIT

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball has been selected into the 48-team field for the 2025 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The field of teams was announced Sunday night with the official bracket to be revealed on Monday with the official matchups, dates/times, and locations for the opening round.

The Screaming Eagles make their second consecutive appearance in the WNIT after debuting in the 2024 edition after winning the 2023-24 Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships. Last year, USI bested the University of Illinois Chicago at home, 69-64, in the first round. The Screaming Eagles hosted the University of Wisconsin in the second round, falling 67-62.

USI Women’s Basketball (22-12, 12-8 OVC) is coming off a second consecutive OVC tournament berth, making it to at least the semifinal round for the second year in a row. USI won against Tennessee State University in the first round, 90-66, and against the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in the quarterfinals, 73-52, before an 88-78 loss in the semifinals against eventual OVC tournament champion Tennessee Tech University. Tennessee Tech also won the OVC regular-season championship.

The 2025 WNIT is the 27th edition of the Postseason WNIT, powered by Triple Crown Sports and first held in 1998. The tournament field is made up of automatic qualifiers and at-large programs, flexing a mix of Power 4 conferences as well as ascending mid-major programs. All games are played at individual schools.

The roster of teams reflects the depth and competitive excellence found throughout women’s college basketball and draws from Power 4 notables and ascending mid-major conferences. Games are played at campus locations, helping create unique and electric environments for the women’s game that has led to remarkable record-breaking crowds over the years.

In Southern Indiana’s two WNIT home games last year, USI totaled over 5,000 fans in attendance and averaged over 2,500 between the two contests. USI had 3,283 fans for the game against Wisconsin, setting a new Liberty Arena record for a women’s basketball game.

Here’s the 2025 schedule for each round:
Round 1 – March 20-22, 2025
Round 2 – March 23-25, 2025
Super 16 – March 26-28, 2025
Great 8 – March 29-31, 2025
Fab 4 – April 1-2, 2025
Championship – Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 3 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network)
