2022-23 SEASON RECAP
The Indiana swimming and diving program is coming off another successful season in 2021-22 during which the Hoosier men won their fourth Big Ten Championship in six years and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, while the women placed 11th at the national meet for their 14th straight top-15 placement.
Tarrin Gilliland repeated as platform diving national champion, the women’s eighth individual title in as many championships. Gilliland was named CSCAA Division I Women’s Diver of the Year and Big Ten Diver of the Year and was one of two divers to earn first-team All-America honors in all three diving events.
Brendan Burns followed with IU’s first title in the 200-yard butterfly since 1973, while also earning silver medals in the 100-yard backstroke and 400 medley relay. At the Big Ten Championships, Burns won gold in all five events he swam and was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships and Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Year.
Indiana dominated Big Ten postseason awards, earning five of the eight honors available. Alongside Burns, Ray Looze was named Big Ten Men’s Coach of the Year and Andrew Capobianco earned his second straight Big Ten Men’s Diver of the Year award. On the women’s side, Drew Johansen, who was also the CSCAA Women’s Division I Diving Coach of the Year, was picked as the Big Ten Women’s Diving Coach of the Year.
SUMMER SHINE
Indiana capped a great summer of long course swimming, totaling the highest women’s, second-highest men’s and highest combined point totals at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Hoosiers combined for five medals at the meet, including three individual national championships. IU continued its tradition of breaststroke success as Mackenzie Looze (200-meter) and Josh Matheny (100-meter) each won national titles in the stroke. Former IU swimmer Zach Apple tied for a national title in the 100-meter freestyle, going 48.44 to touch simultaneously with Virginia’s Matt King.
Thirteen athletes and two coaches with ties to the Indiana swimming and diving program competed at the 2022 FINA World Championships in June and July, totaling four medals. Former IU swimmer Lilly King won three gold medals during the competition. With a victory in the 200-meter breaststroke race, King became the first American swimmer to win a career of gold medals in the 50, 100 and 200-meter events of one stroke at the long course world championships. Coming out of his freshman season, Carson Tyler nabbed a bronze medal in mixed synchronized platform diving with USA Diving teammate Delaney Schnell.
HOOSIERS NAMED TO USA SWIMMING NATIONAL TEAM
Six athletes with ties to the Indiana swimming and diving program were named to USA Swimming’s 2022-23 national team rosters in September. Of the six Hoosiers, five are breaststroke specialists, and, on the women’s side, IU makes up three of the nine breaststroke selections. The selections include current Hoosiers Mariah Denigan, Mackenzie Looze and Josh Matheny as well as Indiana Swim Club athlete Tommy Cope, Lilly King and Annie Lazor.

Latest Poll: Democratic Candidate Destiny Wells Lead In Secretary Of State Race
INDY—A new poll indicates tight races for Indiana secretary of state and U.S. Senate, with the Republican candidates losing by four percentage points and winning by just two, respectively.
Photos provided; compiled by Sydney Bylery, TheStatehouseFile.com.
The 600-person poll from Sept. 25 and 26 was administered by ARW Strategies and Indy Politics. (The Statehouse File publishes opinion articles from Indy Politics’ editor and publisher, Abdul-Hakim Shabazz.)
In the secretary of state race, the poll is currently predicting an upset of Republican candidate Diego Morales by Democrat Destiny Wells, who has 36% of the vote.
Poll shows neck-and-neck U.S. Senate race
“It’s always good to see polling that reflects what we’ve been hearing every day on this race—Hoosiers want a candidate of integrity when it comes to Indiana’s chief election officer and they know Destiny is the right answer for Indiana’s next secretary of state,†said Lindsay Haake, communications director for the Wells campaign, in a statement to The Statehouse File.
The Morales campaign also issued a statement to The Statehouse File, saying, “Diego is focused on crisscrossing all 92 counties and speaking with voters. The only poll that matters to Diego is the one on Election Day.â€
As Indy Politics noted, the poll was conducted prior to the website releasing transcripts of two women anonymously claiming they were sexually harassed by Morales.
Morales released a statement on Sept. 30, the day the allegations were published, denying them and questioning why the women—one of who is a volunteer for Wells’ campaign and the other a supporter—waited over a decade to come forward.
“Being 39 days out from the election, the timing is clearly politically motivated,†the statement said.
The poll found 65% of Republicans in favor of Morales, as compared to 82% of Democrats supporting Wells.
In the Senate race, current Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., is at 39% of the vote versus Tom McDermott’s 37%. Seventeen percent remain undecided, including 28% of Independents.
ARW Strategies’ founder, Andrew Weissert, told Indy Politics it’s likely Young “end[s] up winning closer to 90% of his own party’s votersâ€â€”the poll has him at 76% currently—and that would result in “giving McDermott a much more difficult path.â€
On the other side, 85% of Democrats are in favor of McDermott, Shabazz told The Statehouse File.
Overall, “Republican candidates should not be particularly excited about this information,†said Andrew Downs, director emeritus of the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Purdue University Fort Wayne.
Downs also said there’s the issue of different Republican wings not getting behind the two candidates, and it’s more likely to hurt Morales.
“Young’s character has not been questioned. Young’s ideological commitment has been questioned. And Young will be able to demonstrate through votes he’s taken, legislation he sponsored—those sorts of things—a commitment to Republican ideals,†Downs said.
Shabazz had the same takeaway, saying Young is failing to attract the “MAGA crowd, while Diego is having trouble with more of the establishment, traditional Republican crowd.â€
When it comes to a Democrat prevailing in either race, Downs says the better chance is with Wells, pointing to her not facing an incumbent or needing to raise as much money as McDermott.
“[I]f Wells can muster appropriate resources, then she is probably in a better position than McDermott,†Downs said.
The poll respondent pool was 43% Republican, 33% Democrat and 24% Independent or third party.
Indiana Department of Insurance Approves Decrease in Workers’ Compensation Rates for 2023
Indianapolis – Indiana Department of Insurance Commissioner Amy L. Beard recently approved a decrease of 10.3% on average for Workers’ Compensation rates recommended by the Indiana Compensation Rating Bureau (ICRB), effective January 1, 2023. Individual employers may experience a rate change different from -10.3% depending on their rating class (classifications based on the type of business) and other rating factors. There are approximately 150 such industry types.
“The 10.3% decrease represents a savings to Indiana businesses of approximately $80 million,†said Commissioner Beard. “We are pleased to approve a rate decrease that helps support Indiana businesses and Indiana workers.â€
The 10.3% decrease can be attributed primarily to the long-term decline in workers’ compensation countrywide claim frequency, and the recent favorable experience in average costs per claim in Indiana for both indemnity and medical benefits.
Workers’ compensation insurance covers medical costs associated with workplace injuries and provides wage replacement benefits to injured workers for lost work time. The Indiana Compensation Rating Bureau (ICRB) and the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) jointly make a rate filing with the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI) proposing loss costs and rates for the coming year of policies. In 2021, there were approximately 350 different insurance companies writing workers’ compensation insurance in Indiana, representing approximately 120 different insurer groups.
Indiana Workers’ Compensation rates consistently rank one of the lowest in the United States, according to the Oregon Workers’ Compensation Premium Rate Ranking report. The Information Technology and Research Section in the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services has examined state rates on a biennial basis since 1986.

Today Is National “Energy Efficiency Day”
CenterPoint Energy Reminds Customers Of Ways To Save Energy And Money
Evansville – Oct. 5, 2022 – CenterPoint Energy is joining in the national celebration of Energy Efficiency Day on Oct. 5 by promoting energy efficiency as one of the easiest, quickest ways for customers to reduce their energy use, lower their utility bills and limit their carbon footprint.
“At CenterPoint Energy, we’re committed to working with our customers so they can be more energy efficient,†said Gregg Knight,Executive Vice President, Customer Transformation and Business Services. “With energy costs expected to rise this winter mainly due to the higher market price of natural gas, efficiency takes on even greater importance, and we are here to help.â€
The higher market price of natural gas has resulted from various factors, including increased demand with production that has not ramped up at the same pace. CenterPoint Energy neither controls nor profits from the market price of natural gas – the costs are passed through without mark-up – and it implements practices aimed at cushioning customers from the changing market.
CenterPoint Energy customers are encouraged to take advantage of energy efficiency tips, offerings, and resources to help save energy and money year-round, especially during the upcoming winter heating season.
In Southern Indiana, CenterPoint Energy’s Energy Efficiency team will be sponsoring the Caldwell Energizing Evansville block party on Wednesday, October 12, 3 p.m.-7 p.m., at Caldwell Park on S. Governor Street in Evansville. CenterPoint Energy is joining with several community-serving organizations to raise awareness about energy efficiency programs and share information about housing, health care, financial and energy assistance resources – and also have some fun! There will be food, drinks, entertainment, games and much more. CenterPoint Energy will also be signing up eligible families to receive a free home energy assessment.
Customers can also take advantage of CenterPoint’s online energy tools to pinpoint ways to save energy in the home by using actual data from energy bills. The resources, provided at no additional cost, include an online energy assessment, customized tips based on the size of the home and energy usage, and a comparison tool to show how your usage might compare to similar homes. To use these tools, customers must log in to their CenterPoint Energy.com online account.
In addition, if you are looking to upgrade to a high efficiency HVAC system, CenterPoint Energy offers a rebate of $225 to help offset the purchase cost. Because heating accounts for the majority of your energy usage, replacing your old or inefficient heating equipment is one of the most impactful measures you can take to curb your energy costs.
CenterPoint Energy also offers these simple energy efficiency tips:
- Make sure your heating system is operating safely and efficiently with an annual tune-up by a qualified technician. Check your furnace filter monthly and clean or change it as needed to help your unit run at full efficiency and supply better air flow. CenterPoint Energy offers a rebate of $25 to help offset the cost.
- Use a programmable thermostat to match your household’s schedule by automatically lowering the heating temperature at night or while you’re away from home. It can maximize your energy savings without the hassle of manually adjusting your thermostat. CenterPoint Energy rebates up to $75 can help offset the purchase cost.
- Caulk and weather strip around windows and doors to keep warm air from escaping and cold air from entering. These two simple air sealing techniques can pay for themselves in energy savings within one year.
- Keep curtains and blinds open during the day to allow the sun’s heat to warm your house. Close curtains and blinds at night so you don’t lose heat when the sun goes down.
- Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when shopping for a new appliance to help you get a product that meets high efficiency standards.
