Eagles to Host Senior Day on Saturday
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer team will host their senior day festivities on Saturday, October 8, when they play host to the University of Nebraska Omaha at 7pm. Senior recognition is set to start at 6:15 pm.

After their match with the Mavericks, the Screaming Eagles will take an 11-day break before making their furthest trip of the year when they travel to Denver, Colorado to take on the University of Denver on October 19. Then USI will head to St. Charles, Missouri to take on Lindenwood University for the second time this season on October 23. The Lions beat the Eagles 2-1 in a non-conference match earlier this season.

USI will be hosting their senior day recognition on Saturday before the match with Omaha. The Eagles will be honoring Brian Winkler (Philpot, Kentucky), Ryan Olwig (St. Peters, Missouri), Mical Hardtman (Hamilton Parris, Bermuda), Colten Walsh (St. Louis, Missouri), Ryan Nevins (St. Peters, Missouri), and Alec Meissner (St. Charles, Missouri). Winkler finishes his career with three goals and 15 assists in his 52 games played. Olwig ends his USI career making 19 appearances for the Eagles. Hardtman has scored one goal and recorded two assists in 29 matches over his three seasons. Walsh has played and started in 77 games over his five-year career at USI, he has scored 10 goals and recorded nine assists for the Eagles and has played over 6100 minutes for USI. Lindsay leaves USI with two assists in his 62 games played over the last five seasons. Nevins ends his USI career scoring 11 goals, including six in 2019, and recording five assists over 71 games played. In his three years at USI, Meissner has played in 16 matches and made 11 starts, he has allowed 21 goals while making 53 saves and facing 150 shots.

The Eagles struggled offensively against Bellarmine, not recording a shot in the first half and finishing the match being outshot 25-10 and 12-2 in shots on goal. The USI defense looked incredible however, while allowing 13 shots in the first half, the back line was able to keep the Knights scoreless at halftime. Meissner played a big roll in that, making six saves. The final 30-minute curse struck again for the Eagles when the Knights took a 1-0 advantage in the 67th minute off a corner. USI couldn’t get the momentum to swing their way as Bellarmine was able to cap off the night with a goal in the 74th minute to make it 2-0.

Sam Benoist (Foristell, Missouri) was named the TicketSmarter Summit League Offensive Peak Performer of the Week on Monday after leading the Eagles to their first victory over Eastern Illinois University. Benoist finished the match with four points coming from his two goals. He also took two shots and two shots on goal which converted both. This is Benoist’s first weekly honor and USI’s first since Brian Winkler earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2021.

Head Coach Mat Santoro has been trying to find the perfect lineup all season for the Eagles. Only five outfield players have started in every game they’ve played this season. Nick Faddis (St. Louis, Missouri), Will Kirchhofer (Fishers, Indiana), Damian McGregor-Wickham (Toronto, Canada), and Walsh have all started every match for the Eagles while Ednilson Voiles (Jeremie, Haiti) has played and started in 10 matches. In the 11 matches for the Eagles, they have had nine different starting lineups this season. The Eagle’s defense has been very consistent for Santoro, with his main stays of Walsh, McGregor-Wickham, and Travis Sides (Evansville, Indiana) who have all been playing well this season especially in the first half.

Summit League Play
Summit League play continued on Saturday with four matches on the schedule. Western Illinois University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City fought to a tough 0-0 draw. USI earned their first win of the year over Eastern Illinois, 3-2. Denver continues their hot season with a win over Omaha, 1-0. The match between the University of St. Thomas and Oral Roberts University was postponed after the loss of ORU player Eugene Quaynor. Four Summit League sides are in action on Tuesday, but no conference matches are on the schedule. Eastern Illinois and Lindenwood opened the conference week with a battle on Wednesday, the Lions came out victorious 2-1. Eastern Illinois then hosts in-state rival Western Illinois on Saturday with an early kickoff and both teams looking for their first Summit League win of the year. Denver and St. Thomas will meet in St. Paul, Minnesota as both teams fight to stay unbeaten in conference play. There are two nightcaps in the league as Omaha travels to USI and Oral Roberts heads to take on UMKC, both matches starting at 7pm.

Nebraska Omaha Mavericks
Omaha comes to Strassweg Field on Saturday with a 4-4-1, 1-1 Summit, and are coming off a loss to Denver last Saturday, 1-0. Mathis Pilon St-Louis is leading the Mavericks this season with four goals on the year. Kenji Mboma Dem leads the team with nine points this year, scoring three goals and recording three assists. Pilon St-Louis is leading the team with 21 shots as well as 8 shots on goal. Omaha has had two keepers playing this season, Nathanael Sallah started the first seven non-conference matches for the Mavericks, allowing 18 goals and making 23 saves on 97 shots faced. But they have gone with Lute Lillo Portero for both of their conference matchups, he has allowed one goal and made 10 saves on 28 shots faced. The Mavericks were picked to finish third in the Summit League this season after finishing last season in third place with a 6-10-1, 4-2 Summit League, record.

Last week, Senator Braun took to the Senate floor to call for a Convention of States to add term limits and a balanced budget as amendments to the Constitution to address the national debt crisis.
Ivy Tech Community College Celebrates Distinguished Alumni
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Ivy Tech Community College has honored Malachi Greb, of Evansville, as one of 18 individuals across the state selected to receive the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor given to recognize Ivy Tech Alumni. Selected through a highly competitive process, each recipient has made a lasting impact on their community and on Ivy Tech through outstanding professional, philanthropic, or volunteer accomplishments.
“These individuals exemplify service and leadership in extraordinary ways,†said Ivy Tech President Dr. Sue Ellspermann. “Our distinguished alumni prove that an Ivy Tech education equates to career fulfillment and economic prosperity, and I am honored to witness how the College has played a role in their continued lifelong success.â€
Greb, an associate of applied science graduate in Advanced Automation and Robotics and Industrial Technology, has spent the past 10 years sharpening his skills in the automation industry. In 2020, he launched his own company, Elite Automation, specializing in the design, programming, and installation of industrial automation systems.
His nominator said he stood out as a student, always taking on big projects and completing them. He took a manual labor, industrial maintenance type job with a robotics company while going to Ivy Tech. But, his nominator said, he used that opportunity and environment to learn more. He spent his free moments seeking out additional work and asking to try higher-level jobs.
Then, in 2019 he began working to create his own company, but soon after doing so, the pandemic swept across the nation. The nominator said that while this presented a challenge as companies were holding off on projects, Greb focused on making his business stand out through social media posts on YouTube, LinkedIn, and others. Elite Automation ranks highly on LinkedIn for social media presence for automation companies and has more than 12,000 followers.
Sales in 2021 were approximately $1 million, and his team has grown to 15 employees. His nominator said when other students would step back on a challenging job, Greb stepped up and worked on projects beyond what the class content covered. He has continued his problem-solving by growing his company through a pandemic. “The fact that he graduated from our community college and has sights on growing his company to be one of the largest in the world is amazing,†the nominator said.
Alumni, faculty, staff, and friends are all encouraged to make nominations. Awardees must be graduates of Ivy Tech, having received an Associate Degree, Technical Certificate, or Certificate.
The College has been honoring Distinguished Alumni since 1998.
Vincennes University Board Of Trustees Holds Annual Meeting, Tours Technology Open House
VINCENNES, Ind., October 5, 2022 –  Monday made for a busy day on campus for the Vincennes University Board of Trustees. The Board held its annual meeting in Updike Hall – Center for Science, Engineering, and Mathematics in the morning. In the afternoon, the Trustees attended the Technology Open House in the Technology Center.
During the Oct. 3 meeting, the Trustees re-elected John Stachura as Chairman of the Board. Two Trustees, Second Vice Chair Reggie Henderson, and Kelly Clauss, began serving new terms.
VU President Dr. Chuck Johnson congratulated Stachura, Henderson, and Clauss in his remarks.
Johnson also gave an update on enrollment. Applications for Spring Semester 2023 and Fall Semester 2023 are trending in the right direction, according to Johnson. He added that system-wide numbers are up in headcount and full-time equivalency, and the leading areas seeing growth are the VU Jasper Campus, online programs, and Early College programs.
International enrollment numbers have also increased, and 20 countries are represented. VU has achieved 100 percent growth since 2016. Driving the increase are students from China, where VU has a special focus. The growth has occurred in both on-campus and online enrollments.
“I’m pleased and proud to say we’ve made great strides despite the pandemic,†Johnson said. “In fact, because of the pandemic, VU faculty and staff, working with our partner, R1SE Education, found a creative way for students to begin their VU education, even when travel restrictions made it impossible for them to come to the U.S. New online international cohorts of students were created and faculty restructured their courses to incorporate live learning activities, despite the 12-13 time difference.â€
The Board heard reports from Vice President of Government and Legal Affairs Tony Hahn, Executive Director of VU Foundation and Senior Director of Institutional Advancement Kristi Deetz, and Director of Development Leslie Kidwell.
Hahn provided a brief update on Robeson Hills, a 545-acre nature preserve in Lawrence County, Illinois, that is owned by VU and serves as an outdoor laboratory and environmental education site for VU students. Robeson Hills is one of the best examples of an old-growth beech and maple forest in all of Illinois, and it also has significant archaeological significance, according to Hahn. He reported that a Purdue Extension certified forester has consulted with VU on what it should do to maintain the intent of the preserve. Hahn says the next step is to employ a qualified forester through a request for proposal process to complete a forest inventory and create a forest management plan.
In her report, Deetz reported on fundraising achievements and provided highlights of the past year. The 2021-22 fundraising year marked significant growth in several stages of the moves management process and engaged new donors. The Foundation and University exceeded their overall fundraising goal and met several other goals.
“The beautiful news is gifts have really gone up, and that means people are giving recurring gifts and are giving more than once a year,†Kidwell said. “We are also obtaining new donors. With 125,000 living alumni in our donor database, growing that number is very important to us. You will see an increase of 27 percent.â€
They also shared that the third annual Blazers Give Day is April 13, 2023.
In other Board news, University Compliance Officer Amie Calvert was introduced to the Board. Calvert joined VU in this newly created role this summer. Given the overlap with compliance responsibilities, she will also serve as the Title IX Coordinator for VU.
After the meeting concluded, the Trustees toured VU’s new Center for Applied Robotics and Automation, Additive Manufacturing and Reverse Engineering Center, and HURCO Advanced CNC Machining Technology Center in the Technology Building. The open house officially opened the three state-of-art laboratories.
 ‘ADOPT AN ASH’ PROGRAM BUOYED BY LOCAL SUPPORT, BUT MORE HELP NEEDEDÂ
EVANSVILLE, IN — The Evansville ‘Adopt An Ash’ Program is delighted to acknowledge some significant donations to their cause but still needs additional help from the community. The Program will be holding a Press Event on Friday, October 7th, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery (1400 E. Virginia Street, Evansville, IN 47711) to help raise awareness of the Program and allow local media to witness the treatment of one of the trees in the cemetery.Â
Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a non-native, invasive insect, first discovered in Michigan in 2002. Since its arrival, it has destroyed hundreds of millions of ash trees and cost billions of dollars in management. The insect is currently infesting trees in the Evansville area and, with 100% mortality in untreated trees, local awareness is a must.Â

The Program is also holding its annual Twilight Tour at Oak Hill Cemetery on Saturday, October 15th at 5 p.m. The tour is a walking tour through the cemetery where live reenactors will tell you about different people who once called Evansville home. OBITUARY OF DAVEY LEE WILLIAM JOURDAN
OCTOBER 13, 1929 – OCTOBER 1, 2022
Davey Lee William Jourdan, 92, of Evansville, IN, passed away on October 1, 2022. He was born on October 13, 1929, in Evansville, IN to the late Oscar W. and Marie (Keeton) Jourdan.
Davey worked as a machinist from Bucyrus Erie for 35 years, where he played in the softball and bowling leagues. He was a former member of St. Paul’s UCC on Michigan Street, Perry Township, and Reitz High School bands. Dave enjoyed mowing grass, and horses, visiting with his neighbors, and spending time with his grandkids. He, also, liked St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Chicago Bears football, and Indiana Hoosiers basketball.
Dave is survived by his wife of 72 years, Connie (Duggins) Jourdan; daughter, Lynn Wilson (Mark); son, Greg Jourdan (Debbie); grandchildren, Jill Darke-Schreiber (Mollie), Rusty Jourdan (Stacy), Matt Schreiber (Gina), Kurt Jourdan (Will), Jamie Phillips (Rori); great-grandchildren, Hadlie, Henslie, Ralph, Brock, Braxten, Ava, Jacob, Sully, Seth, Morgan and Austin; great-great-grandchildren, Nolan and Karter.
Family and friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road.
Funeral services will be held on the following Saturday, October 15, 2022, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. at Alexander Memorial Park – Cemetery Chapel, 2200 Mesker Park Drive, officiated by Pastor Jeff Long, with burial to follow.
