No. 6 Trailblazers pull away late in win over Harry S. Truman

0

CHICAGO, Ill. – The No. 6-ranked Vincennes University Trailblazers overcame some early struggles Saturday afternoon against Harry S. Truman College before pulling away late in the second half to pick up the 94-60 victory at Richard J. Daley College.

Vincennes looked to set the tone early, jumping out to an early 14-8 lead, before extending to their largest lead of the half at 28-17.

Harry S. Truman battled back to cut the deficit to five before VU closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to take a nine-point lead into the locker room, 34-25.

The short-handed Falcons, who only had five active players, looked to make a run to start the second half, but a 17-4 scoring run by the Trailblazers ballooned the VU lead to 70-44.

The Trailblazers found a group on the floor that worked as VU used a late 8-0 run to seal the game as VU pulled away to a 94-60 win, their 14th straight victory to begin the season.

“I thought we were pretty sloppy for 25 minutes,” VU Hall of Fame Head Coach Todd Franklin said. “Plus you combine sloppy with not being able to hit shots, so at some point we have to find somebody that can hit shots. In the last 15 minutes we hit some shots. We got a little sharper and quit subbing. We found a group, stayed with that group and that group responded better. We still have a lot of room to go, but it was better.”

“Hats off to Truman,” Franklin added. “They played hard. Coach Cooksey had them ready to play. They did what they could. They stretched us. They had some guys that can do some things with the ball and hurt you and the other guys can hit a shot if you come off of them and they played to that all night.”

“We just didn’t put the ball in the basket or move the ball clean and sharp for the first 25 minutes,” Franklin said. “There’s a lot of room to improve on the last 15 minutes, but the last 15 I thought we were better. I stopped subbing. I found a group that I thought gave me a positive vibe and I stayed with that group. Sometimes it wasn’t perfect. Sometimes it wasn’t great. But it was positive and it’s amazing what happens.”

Vincennes was led offensively by sophomore Caleb Johnson (N. Preston, Nova Scotia) who came through with a big second half, scoring 23 of his game-high 27 points in the final period of play.

Johnson also recorded his first double-double of his Trailblazer career with 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Sophomore Tasos Cook (Columbus, Ohio) finished with 21 points, while also dishing out a team-high six assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Kale Gaither (Madisonville, Ky.) came off the bench to reach double-figures, ending with 11 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Freshmen Kris King (Washington, D.C.) and Michael Osei-Bonsu (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each just missed a double-double, with Osei-Bonsu ending with nine points and 10 rebounds and King ending with nine points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Raley’s big double-double leads USI to strong road win

Meredith Raley records 17 points and 16 rebounds at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball earned a strong 66-60 victory against Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, recording the first road win of the season for the Screaming Eagles. USI’s solid road win comes behind the stout performance of junior forward Meredith Raley (Haubstadt, Indiana), who posted her second career double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds Saturday afternoon.

Raley’s 16 rebounds on Saturday marks the first time a Screaming Eagle has pulled down 15 or more rebounds in a game since Kacy Eschweiler grabbed 22 rebounds against Ferris State University on November 16, 2018. For Raley, her previous season-high was eight rebounds against Bethel University (Ind.) on November 23. Her other career double-double and previous career-high in rebounds came last season against Missouri University of Science and Technology on February 19 when Raley tallied 18 points and 10 rebounds. Raley also extended her streak on Saturday of scoring 10 or more in every game this season for USI.

The Screaming Eagles also had senior forward Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) register 17 points and six rebounds Saturday, while sophomore guard Vanessa Shafford (Linton, Indiana) collected 16 points and seven boards on the afternoon.

Southern Indiana’s win against Eastern Michigan was also USI’s first in three tries this season against an opponent from the Mid-American Conference. Heading into Saturday’s matchup, Eastern Michigan was fourth in the overall MAC standings with Northern Illinois University and Bowling Green State University, whom USI fell to earlier this season, sitting first and second in the overall MAC standings, respectively.

Both teams started the game trying to settle in and find their rhythm in half-court sets, as the defenses were active early. The contest showed signs of being a game of runs and a tight game in the opening minutes. At the 5:38 mark of the first quarter, USI trailed Eastern Michigan 9-4, but the Screaming Eagles went on a 9-0 run to surge ahead. Haithcock had four points and Raley scored the other five points of the 9-0 run. The first period concluded with an 11-2 run for the Screaming Eagles, as USI took a 15-11 lead into the second quarter.

USI increased its lead to six, 19-13, after a pair of free throws by Shafford with 8:10 left until halftime. Eastern Michigan battled back to cut USI’s lead down to two, 19-17, with 6:32 on the clock in the second. Shafford put USI back up five after a three-pointer seconds later, but then Eastern Michigan answered with five points within the next minute to even the game at 22 halfway in the second period. Southern Indiana was not fazed, as the Screaming Eagles went on another 9-0 run, including a basket by Raley and a triple from Shafford. USI went into halftime with a 31-24 lead after a late, second-quarter basket by Eastern Michigan.

The third quarter started with a layup by Raley to push USI’s advantage back to nine. Then Eastern Michigan found a spark and made a charge, scoring eight straight points to climb within a point of USI, 33-22, and 6:57 remaining in the third. A jumper by Shafford quickly snapped EMU’s scoring run, but the battle was just starting. Eastern Michigan went ahead 36-35 at the 5:45 mark in the third, snagging its first lead since early in the first quarter. Just as it seemed the momentum was swinging in Eastern Michigan’s favor, USI’s senior forward Tara Robbe (Wildwood, Missouri) made a strong drive toward the basket to give the lead back to USI, 37-36. Both teams exchanged points over the next couple of minutes until Eastern Michigan tied the game again 43-43 with just over two minutes left in the third. The EMU Eagles made the last rally of the third quarter to carry a 47-45 lead into the fourth quarter. Eastern Michigan outscored USI 23-14 in the third period.

A three-pointer by Eastern Michigan in the first minute of the fourth period increased EMU’s lead to five, 50-45. Once again, USI was not rattled, as Shafford converted an and-one play less than a minute later. After a few back-and-forth possessions, Southern Indiana capitalized on another three-point play. A basket and a foul by Haithcock put USI back in front 53-52 with 6:10 left in the fourth. Raley scored her 17th point of the game a minute later off a jump shot to give USI a 55-52 advantage. Southern Indiana’s lead improved to eight, 61-53, with under two minutes remaining. Eastern Michigan continued to fight, making the game a five-point contest with less than a minute left. Late free throws by Shafford and Robbe gave USI added insurance on the scoreboard to secure the road win. The Screaming Eagles responded to Eastern Michigan’s third quarter by outscoring EMU 21-13 in the final frame.

Southern Indiana had a big day on the glass Saturday, outrebounding Eastern Michigan 50-39 and pulling down 13 offensive boards. USI was also aggressive inside with 36 points in the paint. On the day, USI was 24-for-63 and 38 percent from the floor, including three triples made from beyond the arc. The Screaming Eagles were very effective at the charity stripe, going 15-for-16 and 93 percent from the line Saturday.

Individually, Raley’s 17 points came behind 7-for-17 shooting overall. Haithcock was 6-for-15 overall and 5-for-5 at the line toward her 17 points. Shafford scored her 16 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the floor and four makes at the free-throw line. Robbe scored six points with six rebounds.

Eastern Michigan went 18-for-62 and 29 percent from the field, 5-for-19 and 26 percent from three, and 19-for-27 and 70 percent at the line. EMU also tallied 22 fast-break points in the game. Eastern Michigan was led by its leading scorer Saturday, as sophomore guard Lachelle Austin scored 19 points with 11 of the 19 coming at the free-throw line. Sophomore center Tayra Eke posted a double-double of 14 points and 14 caroms.

USI held an opponent to only 18 makes from the floor and 10 or more points below their season scoring average for the second consecutive game on Saturday, as Southern Indiana’s defense previously did so on Wednesday at Butler.

Saturday’s win moves USI to 4-4 on the season, while Eastern Michigan is now 5-2 after a second consecutive loss.

USI will step away from game action next week for finals and conclude the fall semester. The Screaming Eagles will then resume their road swing next weekend on back-to-back days against Wright State University next Saturday and at the University of Cincinnati on Sunday.

Big second half lifts Ball State to win over UE basketball

Aces have 11 days until next contest

MIUNCIE, Ind. – Three days after setting his career scoring mark against Campbell, Marvin Coleman II had another strong effort, scoring 17 points as the University of Evansville men’s basketball team fell by an 88-69 final to Ball State on Saturday inside Wortham Arena.

Coleman went 3-for-4 from outside while tying for the team lead with three assists and posting a team-best two steals.  Kenny Strawbridge Jr. totaled 15 points and 8 rebounds while Antoine Smith Jr. drained four triples on his way to 14 points and 7 caroms.  Preston Phillips tied his career scoring mark with 9 points while hauling in 9 boards.

“We knew we had to defend without fouling and it really set the tone.  To give up 21 free throws in the first half, you tend to give up your aggression and we need to be more disciplined without fouling,” UE head coach David Ragland explained.  “We told our guys to do a better job of playing hands free.  Over the last week, we have been able to be more diligent with our time and get extra shots up.  It has helped to get extra rest and treatment.”

Jaylin Sellers paced the Cardinals with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Payton Sparks picked up a double-double.  He registered 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  As a team, BSU was 31-of-40 from the line.

Strawbridge hit a jumper that gave Evansville a 3-0 lead to open the game.  Ball State responded with eight in a row as a pair of triples found the bottom of the net to give them an 8-3 lead.  Yacine Toumi ended the run when he drove to the basket for a field goal before the Cardinals added to the advantage.

Two free throws put BSU up 17-10 at the 12-minute mark before Evansville used the long ball to get right back in it.  Preston Phillips and Antoine Smith Jr. drained back-to-back triples to make it a 1-point game.  Over the next six minutes, Ball State slowly took control.  Their defense held UE to 0-of-9 shooting with two turnovers.  On the offensive end, BSU scored 11 in a row to go up 28-16 with five minutes to go in the half.

Marvin Coleman II hit his second triple of the day to cut into the deficit before the Cardinals pushed the lead to 42-28 at the break as they shot 50% including a 4-of-7 showing from outside.

Things continued to go Ball State’s way in the second half as they scored eight of the first nine points before extending the lead to 22 when a triple made it 56-34 with just under 15 minutes remaining.  Gabe Spinelli connected on the first 3-pointer of his career in the early moments of the period.

Evansville never gave up and shot its way back into contention.  An 11-2 rally included a pair of 3-pointers from Smith along with five points from Coleman.  His third triple of the afternoon made it a 58-45 game at the 11:45 mark.  Ball State came back with five in a row and would see their lead grow even more.

Coleman knocked down two free throws following a BSU technical to temporarily stop the run, but the Cardinals continued to cruise.  With under five minutes remaining, they went up by an 83-55 score.  UE continued to battle back in the final minutes, getting as close as 16 (85-69) before the game finished with an 88-69 BSU victory.

Ball State shot 44.4% in the game while going 9-for-19 (47.4%) from outside.  Evansville completed the day shooting 39.0% while going 9-of-18 from 3-point range.

With final exams set for this week, the Aces will have some time off before returning to the floor on December 21 with a home game against Bellarmine.

EVANSVILLE, IN  On December 13, 1977, a plane crashed at 7:22 p.m., just 90 seconds after takeoff. The event tragically took all 29 lives on board, including the University of Evansville (UE) men’s basketball team, supporters of the Purple Aces, and the flight crew. To commemorate the 45th anniversary and remember these lives, UE has planned two services on Tuesday, December 13, that are open to the campus community and the public.

A daytime service will be held at noon at Memorial Plaza on campus, located directly behind Olmsted Hall. The service will include an invocation and message by Reverend Andy Payton; bagpipes by Tad Dickel, PhD; and the reading of the names of those who tragically passed. Afterwards, a reception will be held in the Class of 1959 Gallery, located on the second floor of Ridgway University Center. Light refreshments will be served.

The evening service, which begins at 7:00 p.m., will be held inside Neu Chapel. Speakers for the evening include Reverend Cynthia Bumb ’81, Curt Begle ’99, and Mike Blake, sportscaster. A moment of silence will be observed at 7:22 p.m.
