Senator Braun Votes ‘No’ On $1.7 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill

2

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Braun released the following statement following his vote against the $1.7 omnibus spending bill, text of which was first released late on Monday night.

“I voted against the omnibus bill because we can’t keep running America into the ditch with wasteful spending bills negotiated behind closed doors and rammed through the last minute. We’re $31 trillion in debt, and every Hoosier is paying for it. They deserve better.” – Senator Mike Braun

Senator Braun first came out against the omnibus bill on December 1st, with an op-ed calling for a short-term spending bill to keep the government open until the Republican House majority the American people voted for could be sworn in on January 3. Senator Braun called for his Senate Republican colleagues to reject any spending bill negotiated by the outgoing Democratic House majority led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Earlier this year, Senator Braun forced a vote on the Senate floor on his own balanced federal budget.

On Tuesday this week, Senator Braun spoke at a press conference with conservative Senate colleagues with all 4,155 pages of the bill in front of them:

VU Bowling Makes Big Splash With Signing Of Cayden Russell

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University bowling coach Paul LeMond hit big on his first signing as head coach of the Trailblazers in Noblesville native Cayden Russell.

Cayden is a right hand, two-handed bowler and is the son of 2003 NJCAA All-American, member of the VU 2003 NJCAA National Championship team and current PBA Tour pro Ronnie Russell and 2003 NJCAA All-American and 2003 NJCAA Women’s Individual National Champion Michelle Russell.

“I am really excited to have Cayden joining our team next season,” VU Bowling Coach Paul LeMond said. “He will always be my first signee and I couldn’t think of a better kid for it. I’ve known Cayden and have bowled with him since he was about 10 years old. Cayden is one of the Top 20 high school bowlers in the country and he is a strong start to the type of bowling team I am looking to build for next season.”

Cayden didn’t begin to seriously pursue bowling until the age of 14, but in the four short years cine he has committed to the sport and has earned many achievements.

Russell was the Middle School Regional Champion in 2019 after winning 2-TKO championships and one second-place finish.

That same year, Russell also bowled his first 300 game at the age of 14.

With little opportunities to compete his freshman year of high school, Russell still managed to find success, winning the Indiana High School Bowling Sectional Championship in his conference and had a strong showing at the Indiana High School State Finals.

Cayden then took advantage of every event available to him in 2021 and built up quite a resume including winning the 2021 Indiana High School State Championship with his team, 2021 Storm Youth Team Challenge Champion and Indiana/Kentucky All-Star and Team Champion, collecting both High Series and Game for both Team and Singles.

Russell was also the runner-up at the 2021 Indiana Youth State Masters, placed seventh at the Indiana Youth State Open and 16th place at the 2021 Junior Gold tournament out of a field of 1,100 bowlers.

Last season Cayden continued to challenge himself by entering new events and programs which led to him being named to the 2022 Indianapolis All-City Team and an Indiana/Kentucky All-Star.

Russell was also named a Northwest Indiana Junior Tournament Players Association (NWIJTPA) All-Star and won the Adult/Youth Tournament Championship alongside his father Ronnie.

Russell also competed with his father as a contestant in the 2022 PBA chosen Royal Family Tournament which aired on Fox Sports.

Russell won his second Indiana State Youth Masters Championship in 2022 and was an Indiana High School All-State Champion, as well as being a Lake Michigan Cup Member and Champion that year.

To date, Russell has 22 300 games under his belt, including countless 800 series. Russell will be finishing his senior high school season this spring at Noblesville High School where his mother Michelle is the head coach.

Russell said he looks forward to the adventure ahead with Coach LeMond and is excited to be a member of the Vincennes University Trailblazer bowling program.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department would like to welcome Cayden Russell to the 2023 recruiting class and wish him well as he finishes his senior year of high school.

Eagles claim big home win before the holidays

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball claimed a 90-48 win Wednesday against Brescia University (Ky.) in the Screaming Eagles’ non-conference finale before the holidays and leading up to the start of the Ohio Valley Conference season.

A slow offensive start for both sides led to a competitive game early in the first quarter. Brescia knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes, while USI was earning trips to the charity stripe after attacking the paint.

USI led 15-10 with 3:42 left in the first period. Then the Screaming Eagles established strong play inside with the post players. After the first, senior forward Hannah Haithcock (Washington Courthouse, Ohio) had 12 points, while graduate forward Ashlynn Brown (Perrysburg, Ohio) had nine. Additionally, the nation’s most efficient three-point shooter, sophomore guard Vanessa Shafford (Linton, Indiana), canned a couple of triples in the first.

With USI leading 33-10 after the first quarter, an 18-0 run by the Screaming Eagles to finish the first carried over into the start of the second period. Brescia snapped its scoring drought and USI’s scoring run at 28-0 on a basket with 6:55 remaining in the second quarter.

The offenses cooled off toward the tail end of the second quarter, leading to a 51-20 advantage for USI at halftime. USI’s Ohio forwards in Haithcock and Brown tallied 32 of USI’s 51 first-half points.

USI utilized space away from the basket early in the third quarter. A minute in the third, Shafford drained a three to crossover into double figures, giving USI a 54-20 lead. Near the six-minute mark, junior forward Meredith Raley (Haubstadt, Indiana) connected on a jumper before senior guard Tori Handley (Jeffersonville, Indiana) cashed in from downtown. The jump shots pushed USI’s lead to 61-24.

After being held to single digits for the first time of the season on Sunday in Cincinnati, Raley started a new streak of reaching double figures Wednesday night on a layup with 5:12 left in the third. USI went on to take a 71-34 lead to the fourth quarter.

Southern Indiana continued to space the floor to start the fourth. Senior guard Soffia Rieckers (Evansville, Indiana) swished in a triple only seconds into the fourth, and a minute later, Handley nailed her second three of the game. USI led 79-34 after Handley’s three-pointer.

Midway into the fourth quarter, Brescia put together a 9-0 run off a charge led by senior forward Lindsey Peyton. Peyton was Brescia’s leading scorer on the night with 11 points.

For USI, senior guard Lexi Thompson (Lafayette, Indiana) found her way into the scoring fun for the Screaming Eagles. Thompson, who finished with 12 points, posted seven of her 12 points in the final frame.

Southern Indiana had five players score 10 or more in the contest. Haithcock led all scorers with 24 points on 9-16 shooting. Plus, she grabbed 13 rebounds to secure her eighth career double double. Brown recorded 19 points with eight rebounds, going 9-12 from the field. Shafford and Raley each had 11 points. The last time USI had five players reach double figures was January 20, 2022, against the University of Illinois Springfield.

Overall, USI shot 35-81 for 43.2 percent. The Screaming Eagles hit eight threes and went 12-for-13 at the line. Southern Indiana outrebounded Brescia 53-30, including 21 offensive rebounds. USI also had 28 assists, 46 points in the paint, and 22 second-chance points.

Brescia was 17-50 for 34 percent with three triples and 11-18 at the stripe. The Bearcats had 12 takeaways.

The Screaming Eagles will next prepare for the start of the OVC season after the holidays. On December 29, USI will open the OVC season at Screaming Eagles Arena against Southeast Missouri State University for a 5 p.m. tip-off time.
