The Two Holidays Are Central To Understanding America
By Richard Moss, MD
DECEMBER 23, 2022
Chanukah, the festival of lights, is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the victory of the Maccabees (or Hasmoneans) over the powerful armies of the Seleucid (Greek) Empire under King Antiochus IV. King Antiochus, in 167 BC, in a show of force, forbade important Jewish observances such as keeping the Sabbath and circumcision and dedicated the ancient temple in Jerusalem to Zeus.  In the town of Modi’in, Antiochus’ soldiers forced a village elder named Matityahu to sacrifice a pig before a pagan altar.  Matityahu refused. When another Jew complied, he killed him and another Greek official.  This sparked a three-year rebellion against the Greeks and their Jewish allies, some of whom accepted Greek or Hellenic culture.  Matityahu and his sons, the Maccabees, fought to maintain the ancient ways of the covenant.  At first, the Maccabees and their motley fighters employed guerilla tactics but eventually formed regular forces and routed the Greeks.  In 164 BC, the Maccabees entered Jerusalem and rededicated the temple, removing pagan influences, thus the name “Chanukah†or rededication.
It was a most unlikely victory. But because of it Judaism survived. Without this victory, history would have been profoundly altered.  In the absence of Judaism, Christianity, which followed more than a century later, would never have emerged.
Chanukah is a victory of religious liberty, of the weak over the strong, of righteousness over tyranny, of light over darkness, a miracle.  But there was another miracle.  Jewish tradition holds that when it was time to light the Menorah in the Temple, there was only enough pure oil for a single day, but it lasted eight days after which it was replenished.  And the men that had been soldiers and were now priests and scribes knew that their victory over the mighty Greek army was not just by force of arms but through divine providence. That God walked among the defenders of Judaism.
After the Greeks fell away, there was a brief interlude of Jewish independence in Israel but then the Romans conquered the Holy Land in 63 BC (Pompey).  Life under Roman rule was difficult and there was another rebellion in 70 AD.  General Vespasian destroyed the Jewish kingdom and King David’s ancient capitol fell for a second time.  Many Jews died or were enslaved.  There rose again a savior in 135 AD, Bar Kochba, but in the end his rebellion too crumbled before Rome’s might (Emperor Hadrian). Jerusalem and the Temple were ploughed under with salt and hundreds of thousands of Jews were slaughtered.  Jerusalem was resettled.  Rome renamed Israel, Palestina, reaching back to Israel’s ancient foes the Philistines to conceal its Jewish past.  The exiles went forth as slaves and rootless wanderers.  And the long night began.
But the Chanukah flame continued to burn in the hearts of the Jewish people who dreamed of returning to Israel and Jerusalem.  For 2,000 years it burned in villages and cities across the seas and the continents.  And the exiles returned to reclaim their patrimony.  In 1948, out of the ashes of the Holocaust, the modern state of Israel was born, its fledgling forces defeating the five Arab armies that attacked it at the moment of its birth with the intent of annihilation, another miracle.  And so the Chanukah lights continued to burn in Israel, sometimes flickering but still illuminating, more than 70 years later.
With Christmas upon us, there is also a light that burns for Christians, under assault in the West by the secular left and around the globe especially within the Muslim world but in Communist China and North Korea as well.  It is symbolic that in the darkest time of the year, Christian teaching tells that the logos or the word was made flesh in the form of a newborn baby, the baby Jesus, a Jew, under a star, a light for the world to drive away the darkness and bring redemption and hope.
That Chanukah and Christmas are closely linked in the calendar is fitting for the message they each bring. The two faiths, Judaism and Christianity, taken together as the Judeo-Christian tradition, is the foundation of Western and American civilization.  Western nations are the greatest in the world because they are informed by Judeo-Christian principles.  It is in the West where human rights, liberty, the rule of law, democracy, music and the arts, science and technology have flourished and where slavery was ended. These are the nations that inhabitants from the rest of the world seek to live.  It is in Western nations where citizens are most free and enjoy the greatest prosperity.  It is not an accident.
We must dedicate ourselves to preserving America, the West, and Western civilization, by preserving its Judeo-Christian tradition.  The light of Chanukah and Christmas must continue to burn, and illumine the night, pushing away the darkness that is always present, the norm for most of history. They should guide us and our nation and the West for all time.  It distinguishes us from the rest: our values, our devotion to truth, knowledge, goodness, beauty, and reason, the belief in the sanctity of the individual made in the image of God, while rejecting the moral and cultural relativism of the post-modern Left and the totalitarian threat of unreformed Islam.  We must rededicate ourselves in our current battle as the Maccabees did against the Greeks and as Israel did against the Arab armies that sought its destruction in 1948 and has done ever since against its many enemies.
The spirit of Chanukah and Christmas should inspire us.  Happy Chanukah and Merry Christmas to all.

Attorney General Todd Rokita is calling on Hoosier consumers, businesses, and governments alike to be proactive in protecting their pocketbooks and privacy from China’s TikTok app. Attorney General Rokita recently filed two lawsuits which open an entirely new front against the CCP-controlled company.Â
“Indiana residents should not wait for Congress and the Biden White House to take action against this deceptive social networking app,†Attorney General Rokita said. “We’ve got to take the initiative ourselves.â€Â
Despite flagrant security concerns, more than 130 million Americans — including two-thirds of U.S. teens — say they use the app, which pulls their personal data and potentially pushes it right into the hands of the Chinese government. Â
Attorney General Rokita is asking individuals and business owners to delete TikTok to protect their personal information from the app’s egregious exploitation of consumers as they conduct their everyday activities. TikTok uses Americans’ own smartphones to capture their attention and track their behavior. Â
“The app is not only full of toxic material, which is highly inappropriate for children, but it also opens us up to foreign threats,†Attorney General Rokita said. “Specifically, it allows a Chinese company overseen by the CCP to take our data.â€Â
Attorney General Rokita has led the way in winning battles against Big Tech overreach from Google and other California-based companies. But now a potentially larger threat looms as China reaches right into millions of Americans’ personal devices. Â
TikTok misleads Hoosiers and all Americans — exposing them to sexually lewd messages — even while officials in Beijing take steps to protect China’s own minors and consumers from these same hazards.  Â
“China has said they want to be the dominant force in the world,†Attorney General Rokita said. “This kind of technology is part of that strategy. We need patriots who will fight back against the dangers imposed by this app and others that are no doubt on the way.â€Â

Another Morning Cup Of Coffee “Newsâ€
Just My Thoughts This Morning
By Dannie McIntire
DECEMBER 24, 2022
I needed a strong cup of coffee this morning after reading that a woman in Florida has filed suit against Kraft because their product, “Velveeta Shells and Cheeseâ€, takes longer to prepare than the time of 3 ½ minutes which is printed on the package directions.Â
If you wonder why the court systems are so backed up, the above is a prime example of “judicial nonsense†clogging the justice pipeline.Â
This is just my opinion, but perhaps Kraft should change their package labeling to read; “Most people in the US have an IQ between 85 and 115, if you fall below this range it may take longer than 3 ½ minutes to fix our productâ€.Â
Another cup of coffee, let’s talk about local craft shows which I’m sure many readers have visited this Christmas season. Up until the Covid Pandemic my wife and I did crafts for the Christmas season, participating in craft t shows run by our local schools PTO’s and churches. These institutions use the revenue generated by the booth fees to fund part of their annual expenditures.
Yes, many of the local craft vendors are part of the “black market†economy; retired folks who make a little extra money to boost their retirement income, some are young entrepreneurs’ “helping out with the family financesâ€. Admittedly, the majority in this “black market†do not always report all they make when they file their taxes, the money is “small potatoes†but essential to them.Â
Well, now the democrats are coming after those dollars. Democrats made the change in March 2021, when they passed the American Rescue Plan.
Keep in mind, it’s not that these small vendors don’t pay any taxes, most states have a sales tax on the materials these vendors buy to make their crafts, so essence some tax is being paid to the state.
Starting with the 2023 tax filing year, all app payment systems are being required to issue those using their app payment system to be issued a Form 1099-K to report payments received that total over $600 on an annual basis.Â
The payment apps previously were required to issue a Form 1099-K to users who generated over $20,000 in sales or more than 200 transactions in a year.Â
Do you sell items your family no longer needs, things your children have outgrown, if you use any app for payment, if you sell over $600 in a year you’ll owe the IRS.
If you recall President Biden saying the IRS would not be coming for “the little guyâ€, well guess what, the IRS is knocking on the little guy’s door starting in 2023.
It’s time for one last cup of coffee.Â
I read an article this week saying that many generation Z parents are not allowing their young children to believe in dear old Santa, believing that when their children learn the “truth†it will be too much of a traumatic experience for them.Â
A parent in the article was quoted as saying it put too much pressure on a child to be good. Yep, having to be good as a child in anticipation of Santa coming is sure to traumatize your childhood.
I wonder how many of these parents will be putting X-Boxes and violent video games in their child’s stockings while worrying that believing in the good of Santa will affect their child negatively?Â
As a child I grew up believing in Santa Claus; heck I still believe in the spirit of Santa Claus…geez…is it just me…let your child have a childhood….they’ll be faced with the reality of life soon enough. Â
Rebounding Net International Migration Drives Population Increase
DEC. 25, 2022 – After a historically low rate of change between 2020 and 2021, the U.S. resident population increased by 0.4%, or 1,256,003, to 333,287,557 in 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2022 national and state population estimates and components of change released today.
Net international migration — the number of people moving in and out of the country — added 1,010,923 people between 2021 and 2022 and was the primary driver of growth. This represents 168.8% growth over 2021 totals of 376,029 – an indication that migration patterns are returning to pre-pandemic levels. Positive natural change (births minus deaths) increased the population by 245,080.
“There was a sizeable uptick in population growth last year compared to the prior year’s historically low increase,†said Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Population Division at the Census Bureau. “A rebound in net international migration, coupled with the first year-over-year increase in total births since 2007, is behind this increase.â€
