Game set for 7 p.m. Wednesday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – For the second year in a row, the University of Evansville men’s basketball team opens the Missouri Valley Conference schedule with a home game against Southern Illinois as the Purple Aces and Salukis are set to tangle on Wednesday evening at the Ford Center.  Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT with the Purple Aces Radio Network and ESPN+ having the coverage.

Last Time Out

– Up by as many as nine points in the second half, the Purple Aces dropped a 63-56 contest to Fairfield on Sunday to complete the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic in Savannah, Ga.

– Kenny Strawbridge Jr. scored a season-high 25 points in the contest while Yacine Toumi added 13

– While he did not score, Marvin Coleman II finished the night with 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals, all team bests

What an Improvement

– Offensive rebounding is one thing that has been an emphasis for the Purple Aces this season and the work has paid off

– With an average of 9.88 offensive caroms per contest, UE ranks second in the MVC

– That is a start turnaround from last season when the Aces averaged just 4.77 offensive boards to rank 350th nationally and at the bottom of the Valley

Top Performance

– Scoring 25 points against Fairfield, Kenny Strawrbridge Jr. reached the 20-point mark for the fifth time this season

– His top scoring output of the season saw him register 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting

– Strawbridge’s season average of 17.6 points per game puts him 7th in the MVC

– Over the last four games, he is averaging 20.0 points while shooting an even 50% (30-for-60) from the field

– He has attempted at least 13 shots in seven of the eight games while scoring at least 8 points in each contest

Game Winner

– With 16 seconds remaining and his team trailing Robert Morris by two, Blaise Beauchamp hit a 3-pointer to help UE earn a 54-53 win on Saturday

– Over the last five games, Beauchamp is averaging 12.6 points after finishing with just 4.7 PPG in the opening three games

– He has also seen his shooting improve – in the first four games, he was 9-of-33 (27.2%) from the field but the last four games have seen him convert 16 out of 40 attempts (40.0%)

Turning the Corner

– After scoring a total of seven points in his first six collegiate games, Gabe Spinelli has started to turn the corner in the last two outings

– Spinelli recorded four points in the win over Robert Morris before setting his season high with six tallies against Fairfield

– He has converted 5 of his last 8 attempts after starting the season 2-of-11 from the field

Scouting the Opponent

– Southern Illinois enters the MVC opener with a 4-2 record following a 64-61 overtime win against California Baptist on Nov. 23

– The Salukis have wins over Little Rock, Oklahoma State and Tennessee State with the losses coming to USI and UNLV

– Marcus Domask paces the Salukis in both scoring and rebounding

– Domask comes into Wednesday’s game averaging 19.0 points and 7.2 boards per game; he also leads the team with 18 assists and 5 blocked shots

– Lance Jones is averaging 11.2 points per game and paces the squad with 12 steals

Raley Named OVC Co-Player Of The Week

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Basketball junior forward Meredith Raley (Haubstadt, Indiana) has been named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Co-Player of the Week. The OVC’s weekly accolades are voted upon by the league’s communications directors.

In earning the honor, Raley scored a career-high 23 points last Wednesday against Bethel University (Ind.) inside Screaming Eagles Arena. She surpassed her previous career best of 18 points to hit the 20-point plateau for the first time.

Raley dominated the paint, scoring at will and earning trips to the free-throw line. The junior forward had eight makes at the charity stripe against the Pilots. The Haubstadt, Indiana native added eight rebounds with five coming on the offensive glass. Raley also tallied three assists and three steals in 23 minutes played.

Raley made her second consecutive start last Wednesday and has now scored in double figures in all five of Southern Indiana’s games this season.

On the season, Raley leads USI at 16 points per game, third in the OVC, and is tied for third on the squad with 4.4 rebounds per contest. She has shot over 55 percent from the floor, including a mark of 54 percent from beyond the arc. At the line, Raley has shot over 86 percent on a team-high 19 makes.

Raley and the Screaming Eagles (3-2) return to action Saturday at Murray State University for a 2 p.m. tip. The road game against the Racers begins a five-game road swing for Southern Indiana in December. Saturday’s contest from Murray, Kentucky can be seen live on ESPN3.

Eagles set to play Leathernecks on the road Wednesday USI starts second half of 4-game road swing

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball will visit Western Illinois University for the first time since the 1980-81 season Wednesday in Macomb, Illinois. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday.

The games will be streaming on Fighting Leathernecks All-Access in addition to being heard on ESPN 97.7FM (http://listentotheref.com) and 95.7FM The Spin (http://957thespin.com).

USI hopes to continue building momentum after evening its record at 3-3 with the 69-57 victory over Bowling Green State University Saturday and salvaging a win out of the three-game Gotham Classic. USI senior guard Jelani Simmons (Columbus, Ohio) and junior guard Gary Solomon (Detroit, Michigan) paced the Eagles with 23 points and 21 points, respectively, in the win.

Simmons leads the Eagles through six games with 14.4 points per contest, followed graduate forward Trevor Lakes (Lebanon, Indiana) with 11.2 points per outing. Senior forward Jacob Polakovich (Grand Rapids, Michigan) is third on the team with 10.8 points per game and is posting a team-best 9.3 rebounds per contest.

The WIU Leathernecks are 2-4 after falling to Youngstown State University, 88-64, Saturday at Western Hall. WIU was led by guard Alec Rosner, who had 16 points in the loss. Rosner also leads the Leathernecks for the season with 15.5 points per appearance.

USI trails in the all-time series with Western Illinois, 2-1, and this will be the first meeting since 1981 when the Leathernecks defeated the Eagles in the first round of the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional, 80-73. The first meeting was won by Western Illinois, 82-76, in Macomb during the 1976-77 campaign, while USI took the second game at the Evansville Central Arena, 82-65, that same season.

The final game of the four-game road swing takes the Eagles to Chicago, Illinois, to visit Chicago State University, December 4. USI returns the friendly surroundings of Screaming Eagles Arena December 7 to play Anderson University (Indiana) and December 11 versus Indiana State University.

Attorney General Todd Rokita is warning Hoosiers to watch out for Giving Tuesday scams

Attorney General Todd Rokita is advising Hoosiers to do their research before donating to charities this Giving Tuesday. As always, the public should be vigilant and aware of scammers attempting to take advantage of their generosity.

“Hoosiers are good-hearted people. Unfortunately, that can leave them susceptible to fraudsters,” Attorney General Rokita said. “We all want to help out our neighbors and lend a helping hand at this time of year. We all should take steps to ensure we’re not filling scammers’ pockets rather than truly helping the needy.”

The Indiana Attorney General works to track down, investigate, and bring to justice the criminals who conduct illegal scams.

Giving Tuesday is a great time to show your gratitude by donating to help others, but we all want to make sure our money is in the right hands.

Attorney General Rokita offers the following tips:

  • Slow Down. A real charity will accept your donations any day of the week. If you feel pressured, take as much time as you need. Try researching and talking it over with others.
  • Research the cause or the organization. Search online for the name of the organization or cause with words like “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” See if others have had good or bad experiences with the charity. Check out what charity watchdog groups say about that organization.
  • Know that it’s ok to ask questions. If the request for a donation is over the phone, the caller should be able to answer critical questions.
  • Know who’s making the request. Don’t assume a request to donate is legitimate because a friend posted it on social media. Your friend might not personally know the charity or how it spends money.
  • Make sure you are dealing with the real charitable organization. Be leery of year-end appeals from unknown or unfamiliar organizations you receive by phone, mail, email, and/or social media.
  • Always donate by credit card rather than cash or other methods. This will ensure you can access the protections available through your credit card company.
  • Look up a charity’s report and ratings on these websites:
  • CharityNavigator.org
  • CharityWatch.org
  • Give.org
  • Guidestar.orgÂ
