1

Having lived, studied, and taught abroad, Heidi Tasa is a global-minded leader.

Vincennes University announced Tasa is its first Dean of Global Diversity and Inclusion. She began her new post on Jan. 3, 2023.

According to VU Provost and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council Co-Chair Dr. Laura Treanor, “Vincennes University has long been committed to diversity and inclusion. We are excited to have Heidi serve in this important role that ensures Vincennes University continues to educate and offer extraordinary opportunities to a diverse, multicultural community of students, faculty, and staff.”

Before her current position, Tasa designed and delivered an innovative professional development certification in Inclusive Teaching. She has served on VU’s DEI Council and Faculty Senate in addition to numerous University and English Department committees.

“The Student Affairs team is excited to have Heidi serve as the Dean of Global Diversity,” Assistant Provost for Student Affairs Whitney Daugherty said. “Heidi has done great work in the English department over the last 10 years. She has been innovative in her time as faculty by infusing diversity into her courses and interactions with students, faculty, and staff. We believe Heidi will continue to bring opportunities, education, and a lot of fun to our diversity efforts.”

Tasa has taught French and English for two decades. She was promoted to a full-tenured professor of English in 2022. She has served as the Director of VU’s Honors Program and was the Recruitment/Retention Liaison for the College of Humanities from 2016 to 2022.

Before joining VU in 2013, Tasa was an English teacher for the North Knox (Indiana) School Corporation and a public school French teacher in the Boston metropolitan area. Tasa studied abroad and taught for several years in France.

Tasa earned a bachelor’s degree in French from Indiana University. She went on to earn a master’s degree in English Education from Salem State University. Tasa is currently a Doctor of Education candidate at the University of Southern Indiana.

“I have been fortunate enough to study and live abroad as well as in urban and rural communities. I hope to bring these perspectives to my new role to better serve everyone in the VU Community,” Tasa said.

As the Dean of Global Diversity and Inclusion, Tasa will oversee all aspects of management and oversight for global diversity and insight, including interacting with students, faculty, and staff and developing strategy, planning, and coordinating numerous diversity initiatives. She is responsible for the implementation and assessment of activities to maximize student success for first-generation and historically underrepresented student populations and foster a vibrant community of learning and student support.

“We all hold a piece of the diversity, equity, and inclusion puzzle,” Tasa said. “The Center of Global Diversity and Inclusion will ensure that we are meeting each member of the VU Community where they are and helping them get to where they want to be.”

Tera Klutz Embarks On Another Four Years As Auditor of State

0

STATEHOUSE – Hoosiers from around the state gathered at the Statehouse today to watch Tera K. Klutz, CPA take her oath of office to serve a second term as Indiana’s 57th Auditor of State.

“I am honored by the responsibility and trust our Hoosiers have placed in me to serve another term,” said Auditor Tera Klutz, “and blessed to have the opportunity to continue making Indiana a more transparent, accessible, and accountable state government.”

Indiana State Auditor Tera Klutz

Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch offered remarks during the inauguration ceremony and Chief Justice Loretta Rush conducted the swearing-in for Auditor Klutz and newly elected Secretary of State Diego Morales and Treasurer of State Daniel Elliott. Whitley Yates served as the master of ceremonies, while the Indiana State Police conducted the presentation of colors, Izabella Grady led the Pledge of Allegiance, Brooke Haggard sang the National Anthem and Reverend Jorge Ortiz offered the prayer.

“Our state, like many others in our great nation, has seen our fair share of economic challenges,” commented Auditor Klutz. “But unlike many, Indiana continues to thrive, and I am grateful to be part of a fiscally conservative leadership team who guides our state to progress year after year.

“Indiana finished the last two fiscal years with historic reserve balances, allowing Hoosiers to not only benefit from a strong, more prosperous state for the next generation but they have been given actual dollars back in their pockets.”

As Auditor, Klutz’s primary responsibilities include accounting for all state funds, paying all state expenses and payroll for over 30,000 state employees, overseeing and disbursing county, city, town and school tax distributions, and administering Indiana’s Deferred Compensation Plan (known as Hoosier START).

UPDATE: Today’s inauguration also marked the first day for Auditor Klutz’s newly appointed Chief of Staff and Deputy Auditor, Courtney Schaafsma.

“Courtney is going to help lead the office into the future with a shared vision I have had since taking office,” said Auditor Klutz. “The depth of knowledge and experience she brings to the office will be invaluable as we head into 2023 with our major initiatives.”

Schaafsma previously served under the Pence and Holcomb Administrations as the Commissioner for the Department of Local Government Finance. She has also served as the Director of School Efficiency with the Indiana Department of Education and as Executive Director of the Distressed Unit Appeal Board.

METS and SWIRCA & MORE TEAM UP TO
OFFER FREE RIDES

0

Evansville, IN – Beginning January 1, 2023, and continuing through June 30th, 2023, the Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS), in partnership with SWIRCA & More, will provide free bus rides to disabled persons and seniors 65 years and older who reside in the City of Evansville. All of this was made possible through generous community support and grant funding received by SWIRCA & More to help fulfill its mission in serving older adults and individuals with disabilities.

To qualify for a free ride, eligible riders will simply need to provide their current state-issued photo ID showing proof of age, if 65 and older. For those under the age of 65, riders will need to go to METS with their Medicare card and current state-issued photo ID and get a free METS Discount Card. Individuals can contact SWIRCA at 812-464-7800 or METS at (812) 435-6166 for additional information.

A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday, January 11 at 10 am at SWIRCA & More, 16 W. Virginia Street, to formally announce the start of the free rides program. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will be in attendance and will deliver remarks about the partnership. All media is invited to attend.

“SWIRCA has proudly partnered with METS for over 30 years to help provide transportation services to Evansville residents 60 years and older and we are excited to be able to provide free rides for the first half of 2023 for our most vulnerable residents,” stated SWIRCA’s President, Rhonda Zuber. “Community collaborations like these are extremely important because they help to strengthen age-friendly communities and keep our older adult populations mobile and active.”

Readily available and easily accessible transportation is a vital component in helping older adults remain independent, obtain access to critical health services such as medical appointments, and participate in meaningful activities. In 2021, through SWIRCA’s Transportation Remuneration Incentive Program (TRIP), SWIRCA and METS provided 9,806 rides for area residents. Without these services, there is an increased risk of social isolation and a reduced quality of life for our senior population and those living with disabilities.

Todd Robertson, Executive Director of Transportation and Services for the City of Evansville stated,  “METS has been looking for a way to offer free rides to seniors and those living with a disability for several years. We are excited that SWIRCA and More was able to help sponsor this important service for our community. This collaboration has the ability to reach so many of our friends and neighbors and make a direct impact in their daily activities.”
