EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville fifth-year first baseman Chase Hug (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike/Olney Central) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Week on Monday by the conference office after being a driving force offensively last week to help the Purple Aces to a series victory over Eastern Michigan.
Hug hit .667 (8-for-12) while posting a 1.083 slugging percentage and .778 on-base percentage in four starts last week for UE. He produced multi-hit games in three of UE’s four contests, including opening the week by going 2-for-3 with a walk at Kentucky. Hug then exploded in the final two games of the series against Eastern Michigan to help power the Purple Aces to a pair of victories.
In Saturday’s 9-7 victory over EMU, Hug went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a two-run home run and four RBI. He hit both a two-run home run and two-run double to power Evansville’s nine-run eighth inning. In fact, Hug finished just a triple shy of the cycle, and if not for a runner in front of him during his two-run double in the eighth inning, he likely would have achieved that mark, as he had to be stopped at second with the lead runner stopping at third base on a ball down the right-field line.
On Sunday, Hug went 2-for-3 with two walks in UE’s 5-3 victory over Eastern Michigan, and he finished the series by reaching base safely in eight of his final nine plate appearances on the weekend, with six hits and two walks in nine trips to the plate.
Hug and the Purple Aces will return to action on Wednesday, when UE travels to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to take on preseason Ohio Valley Conference favorite Southeast Missouri State (2-6) in a mid-week contest. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m.
The position of Mayor of a major city like Evansville is not an entry-level government position. As a long-time government employee, I can tell you it is critical to have someone with experience when dealing with the many tasks an administration is faced with- that’s why Cheryl Musgrave for Mayor has my support; her resume and accomplishments speak for themselves.
Take a look! Cheryl will support and lift up law enforcement. Public safety is a number one priority and I trust Cheryl to make sure we have all the resources to keep Evansville safe.
INDIANAPOLIS—Monday was the Indiana House’s deadline to pass bills on to the Senate—any bills that were not heard by the chamber are now dead. That includes the bill to allow school board elections to be partisan, which saw a lot of concern during committee meetings.
Discussion on pension investments took up significant time during the House meeting Monday. House Bill 1008, considered an anti-ESG bill, works to change Indiana pension laws. The bill would make it so that businesses that use ESG factors in decision making cannot involve themselves with the state’s pension system. According to the Corporate Financial Institute, ESG is a framework “that helps stakeholders understand how an organization is managing risks and opportunities related to environmental, social, and governance criteria.â€
Essentially, ESG is used to look at investments for more than just their returns. It takes social and environmental issues into account as well.
This bill also works to protect companies in controversial industries, such as gun manufacturers, in the case that they are discriminated against.
HB 1008’s author, Rep. Ethan Manning, R-Logansport, created the bill because he said the Indiana Public Retirement System needs to focus on the financial side of things.
“What we’re saying is, you can’t institute these quotas and things on corporate boards without having a financial reason for doing so,†Manning said.
Various Democratic lawmakers brought forward concerns with the bill.
Rep. Matt Pierce, D-Bloomington, said, “By voting through this bill, you’re going to say it’s the policy of this state to protect firearm manufacturers and fossil fuel companies while prohibiting anything that would prevent, in the corporate setting, discrimination against all the people that have suffered discrimination in the past.â€
Rep. Ed Delaney, D-Indianapolis, said that the bill avoids real issues for Hoosier workers.
“I’m the first one this session to stand up and say, ‘Maybe we ought to look at the benefits [for Hoosier workers] and see if they’re adequate.’ No, that’s not a topic of interest,†Delaney said. “The interest is when there’s some company that didn’t get investment that we would like to get investment. Why don’t we do our job?â€
The bill ultimately received a passing vote of 66-30 and will now move to the Senate.

Sen. Braun: Biden must declassify lab leak intel
WASHINGTON – Following news that the Department of Energy had new “intel†pointing to a likely lab leak origin to the COVID pandemic, Senator Mike Braun is again calling for immediate declassification of that new intelligence and all classified information related to COVID’s origins and the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Senator Braun led the bill with Senator Hawley to declassify all U.S. government intelligence related to the lab leak theory and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This bill passed the Senate unanimously in 2021.
After this bill passed the Senate, President Biden commissioned an investigation into the origins of the COVID pandemic by the intelligence agencies. The FBI concluded with “medium confidence†that the lab leak theory was correct.
“The American people deserve total transparency on COVID’s origins and the Wuhan lab to make up our own minds. President Biden must declassify everything we know about the origin of COVID and the Wuhan Institute of Virology immediately.†– Senator Mike Braun

LETTER TO EDITOR: Ensure People Of Color Have Access To Culturally Competent Mental Health Resources
My name is Jasmine and I’m a recovery advocate and internet activist. My purpose is to ensure People of Color have access to culturally competent mental health resources. The disparity in access to mental health resources has created inequities that have affected generations, but we can make a stand together.
I really appreciate the action you’ve taken in posting so many great resources on https://city-countyobserver.com/how-to-do-and-talk-art-in-recovery-and-reimagining-times/ to support the community. Your support is empowering and an important part of the solution!
However, I didn’t see anything that specifically pertains to substance use prevention in the BIPOC community. Providing access to culturally competent mental health care is essential.
These guides do a great job of addressing this key issue for People of Color *and* their allies:
I think adding these links to your existing collection could go a long way toward more fully supporting People of Color and our allies. It also helps by sending a strong message that these issues matter and change is always possible!
What are your thoughts on including these resources on your page?
