MIDDLE-INNING EXPLOSION POWERS UE BASEBALL PAST BELLARMINE, 14-2
MIDDLE-INNING EXPLOSION POWERS UE BASEBALL PAST BELLARMINE, 14-2
March 15, 2023
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Evansville baseball team stayed red-hot on Wednesday, as the Purple Aces exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and seven more in the sixth to power past the host Bellarmine Knights, 14-2, at Knights Field in Louisville, Kentucky. With the win, Evansville has now won 10 of its last 12 contests.
“I thought that we did a great job today of staying focused in a mid-week game,†said UE head coach Wes Carroll. “We grinded out some big innings offensively, and I thought that our pitching did well as well. I really thought that Willard Peterson did well in his first outing on the mound as an Ace as the starter.â€
Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the fifth inning, Evansville sent nine men to the plate and took advantage of some Bellarmine wildness to grab a lead it would never lose. The Purple Aces loaded the bases on three-straight walks to open the inning, before junior shortstop Simon Scherry tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.
After another walk re-loaded the bases, fifth-year outfielder Danny Borgstrom roped a two-run double to right-center field to give UE a 3-1 lead. Senior third baseman Brent Widder then followed with a towering home run to left field to push UE’s lead to 6-1.
Evansville would hit back-to-back home runs to open the sixth inning, as sophomore outfielder Ty Rumsey homered for his second-straight game, and fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts followed with a home run to center field to move the lead to 8-1. It marked the first time since 2021 in which UE hit back-to-back home runs (Mark Shallenberger & Tanner Craig at Valparaiso on 5/15/21).
From there, the flood gates opened, as two Bellarmine errors and a walk quickly loaded the bases. A bases-loaded walk by Borgstrom and a sacrifice fly by Widder moved the lead to 10-1, before sophomore catcher Evan Waggoner roped an RBI double to give UE a 10-run lead. Redshirt freshman DH Kevin McCormick followed with an RBI single and Rumsey added another sacrifice fly to give UE a 13-1 advantage.
Bellarmine would respond with one of its two solo home runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 13-2 game. It would remain that way until the ninth, when fifth-year first baseman Chase Hug launched a mammoth solo home run to right field over the highway beyond the outfield wall for his fourth home run of the year.
Evansville pounded out 13 base hits, with Roberts, Hug, Borgstrom, Waggoner and McCormick all recording two-hit afternoons. Widder also drove in four, while Borgstrom notched three RBI.
Seven different UE hurlers combined to limit Bellarmine to two runs on six hits. Junior reliever Shane Harris (2-1) earned the victory in relief. Freshman LHP Willard Peterson made his UE debut as the starter, and did not allow a run on only one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Fellow freshman LHP Jack Taczy also made his UE debut, tossing a scoreless inning of relief, while freshman RHP Max Hansmann, redshirt freshman RHP Ethan Bell, and senior LHP Jace Kressin all recorded scoreless innings on the mound as well.
With the victory, Evansville improves to 10-7 overall. Bellarmine, meanwhile, falls to 5-12. The Purple Aces will now return home to host Big 10 member Purdue in a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. All three games of the Purdue series can be heard live on the Old National Bank Radio Network and 107.1 FM-WJPS, with the Voice of the Aces, Jevin Redman, providing play-by-play coverage.
Braun and Hawley introduce a new bill to protect consumers and community banks from big bank failures
Braun and Hawley introduce a new bill to protect consumers and community banks from big bank failures
WASHINGTON — Following recent news of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) bailout of two failed banks, U.S. Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Mike Braun (R-Ind.) introduced the Protecting Consumers from Bailouts Act to protect consumers from new fees and to force the big banks to face up to their mistakes. The Biden administration announced that they will impose “special assessment†fees on banks across the country to pay for the Silicon Valley Bank bailout.
“Consumers and community banks should not have to shoulder the cost of fiscal irresponsibility by big financial institutions,â€said Senator Hawley. “The Biden administration wants to take money from the American taxpayer and local banks through new fees so they can use it to bail out California billionaires. We must protect hardworking Americans and force the big banks to pay for their own mistakes.â€
“Community banks and their customers in Indiana should not be on the hook for bailing out Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank for their risky financial decisions. We need to make sure responsible community banks and regular Americans are not footing the bill for President Biden’s bank bailout,” said Senator Braun.
The Protecting Consumers from Bailouts Act would:
- Bar banks from passing to their customers the cost of any “special assessment” by the FDIC to bail out Silicon Valley Bank or Signature Bank
- Prevent the FDIC from levying “special assessments” on community banks to pay for bailing out the uninsured depositors of failing banks
- Allow the FDIC to claw back bonuses paid to executives of failed banks

THUNDERBOLTS AIM TO CLINCH PLAYOFFS THIS WEEKEND AGAINST HAVOC, BULLSÂ
THUNDERBOLTS AIM TO CLINCH PLAYOFFS THIS WEEKEND AGAINST HAVOC, BULLSÂ
March 15, 2023
Evansville, In.: After a full sweep of their three games over the past weekend against Macon and Peoria, the Thunderbolts are now only three points away from clinching a playoff spot as they enter their second of three consecutive weekends of three games each, beginning at home against the Huntsville Havoc this Thursday, followed by a road contest at Birmingham on Friday, before hosting the Bulls on Saturday night.
Week In Review:Â
Behind a game-tying goal from Brendan Harrogate in the final two minutes and an overtime goal from Conner Jean, the Thunderbolts rallied to defeat Macon 4-3 in overtime on Friday, with Jean scoring an additional goal earlier in the game along with a goal from Scott Kirton. On Saturday, the Thunderbolts blanked the Mayhem 3-0 with goals from Jean, Alex Cohen, and Hayden Hulton, and 31 saves from Zane Steeves for his second shutout of the season. On Sunday in Peoria, the Thunderbolts defeated Peoria 3-2 in overtime, with power play goals in the first period from Tanner Butler and Aaron Huffnagle, and the overtime winner from Harrogate. Trevor Gorsuch was in net for both overtime wins, stopping 35 of 38 shots on Friday and 33 of 35 on Sunday. After the weekend, Huffnagle was named SPHL Player of the Week for his goal and five assists in the three games. The Thunderbolts climbed into 4th place in the league standings and are only 7 points behind the Birmingham Bulls in 2nd Place, with more games remaining than the Bulls, 1st-Place Peoria, and 5th-Place Knoxville. Teams who finish in 4th Place or higher will secure home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs, guaranteeing two home games for those teams if their first-round series goes to a full three games. Under the win percentage-based seeding system, the Thunderbolts only need a maximum of 3 more points to clinch a playoff berth and can clinch as early as this Friday.

Coming Soon:Â

EVANSVILLE, IND. (03/16/2023) Embrace, the University of Evansville (UE) student-run marketing and communications agency, is utilizing its services to help a local organization fundraise for its upcoming collaborative community kitchen.
The organization, Bedford Collab, LLC, was founded in 2020 by Merrick Korach. Its vision is to provide local food entrepreneurs with a place to grow their businesses while bringing economic development and restoration to the South Side of Evansville.
Bedford Collab and Embrace’s relationship began in February 2022 and has since expanded to include a variety of marketing projects.
Currently, Bedford Collab is raising funds for its community kitchen space. In September 2022, the City of Evansville approved a plan to allocate $170,000 in matching funds to the organization. Efforts to increase donations started in October 2022 through the design of a branded slide deck. Since then, Embrace has developed a website for Bedford Collab and managed a crowdfunding campaign on its social media platforms.
Bedford Collab turned to Embrace in a joint venture to help both entities attain their goals. The Bedford Collab vision aligns with what Embrace hopes to achieve in the community.
“Embrace, like Bedford Collab, exists to support and create opportunities for growth in the Evansville community. Bedford Collab is aiming to improve the quality of life in the Tepe Park Community,” said Chief Executive Officer of Embrace Irais Ibarra. “Embrace strives to create a community in which everyone can enjoy the benefits of high-quality and affordable marketing. These alums have a 100 percent employment rate with either a full-time position or are pursuing higher education. Embrace Marketing and Communications launched in October 2018 as a Changelab course. Now in its 10th consecutive semester, the agency operates year-round and sustains itself through a for-profit business model. Over the years, Embrace has worked with over 60 clients across numerous industries, including small businesses, start-ups, national corporations, non-profits, and political candidates.
