STATEHOUSE (April 13, 2023) – Vanderburgh County and the city of Evansville are set to receive over $1 million to complete much-needed road projects, according to area legislators.
Funding is available through the state’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, which can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, 224 towns, cities and counties will receive over $133.4 million in state matching grants.
“This program allows communities large and small to address their immediate infrastructure needs and make plans for future projects,” said State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville). “These grants allow local governments to improve the lives of residents across our area, and I’m excited to see more improvements coming our way.”
Area grant recipients include Vanderburgh County ($590,023) Evansville ($493,462). Â
“Indiana’s fiscal strength continues to give us opportunities to improve our overall quality of life and bolster our economy,” said State Rep. Tim O’Brien (R-Evansville). “It’s great to see our local communities continue to compete for and receive these grants.”
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.27 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
“Investments in infrastructure are critical to helping our communities thrive,” said State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Patoka). “This program is a great example of state and local governments working together to ensure our roads are maintained.”
A list of all communities receiving matching funds in the latest round is available here. Visit in.gov/indot/communitycrossings to learn more about the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program and the next call for projects opening in July.
Multiple Agencies Respond to Overnight Standoff with Barricaded Gunman in Kendallville
(Kendallville, IN) At roughly 7:30 pm yesterday evening, the Kendallville Police received a report of shots being fired at an apartment complex on Berry Lane near Drake Road on the south side of Kendallville. Officers from KPD and ISP responded immediately, and upon their arrival, an unidentified male suspect began shooting at them from a second-story apartment balcony at 645 Berry Lane. There was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and the officers. The suspect retreated into the apartment and continued firing multiple rounds at officers from inside the apartment.
Numerous officers from multiple agencies continued responding to the scene and were met with continuous and indiscriminate gunfire.  SWAT personnel and armored vehicle assets from the ISP, Auburn PD, Allen County PD, and Fort Wayne PD, along with FWPD’s Air Support Unit responded to the scene to provide a coordinated tactical response. Once armored vehicles were on the scene, officers were able to begin systematically evacuating the adjoining apartments and the neighboring apartment buildings, and then moving those residents to safety.
During the standoff, attempts to establish a line of communication with the suspect were unsuccessful, and the suspect never responded to officers’ loudspeaker (PA) announcements and commands.
At approximately 6:05 am, nearly eleven hours after the incident began, SWAT officers made entry into the apartment. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. He was found suffering from an injury, but the extent of the injury was not known. He was immediately attended to by on-scene paramedics, however, all life-saving measures were unsuccessful. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Moving forward, the Indiana State Police will be the primary investigating agency. Although the immediate incident has been resolved, this is an active ongoing criminal investigation. Currently, there is no further information to release. Once the Noble County Coroner has confirmed the identification of the suspect, an update to this release will be sent out.
When the investigation has concluded the full report will be turned over to the Noble Count Prosecutor for review.
At the time of this release, residents of Drake Terrace Apartments and surrounding homes were being allowed to return to their homes.
FOOTNOTE: Agencies assisting at the scene were the Indiana State Police- Fort Wayne Post/Bremen Post/Special Operations Division, Kendallville Police, Auburn PD, Noble County Sheriff’s Department, Fort Wayne PD, Allen County PD, Avilla PD, Ligonier PD, Dekalb County Sheriff’s Department, Kendallville Fire Department, Parkview EMS personnel, the Noble County Prosecutor.
APRIL 11, 2023
Good afternoon politically-oriented Evansville Facebook folks!
I feel it’s important to address a false mailer that hit mailboxes recently from Evansville’s Future PAC, of which, I was a founding member and was one of two people who were the primary fundraisers for the PAC.
I’m no longer associated with the PAC but many people in politics identify me with it.
I do not condone false negative attacks in any form in politics. Not in primaries or general elections. False negative attack ads almost always come from candidates who are desperate and not polling well. Voters typically recognize this and respond accordingly.
Municipal election candidates should be judged on their ability to execute on ensuring public safety, maintaining our parks, paving roads, and creating economic development.
Redirecting attention away from these issues is an example of poor leadership and bad decision-making.
The PAC made a mistake with this mailer, and I will not be associated with it.
Sincerely
Steve Hammer

Sen. Braun urges DHS and DEA to protect Americans from “Deadliest Drug in Americaâ€
WASHINGTON—Last week Senator Mike Braun sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Mayorkas and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Milgram about the growing public health threat Xylazine, a horse tranquilizer known as “tranqâ€, which is bei
ng mixed with fentanyl as a street drug and has caused fatal overdoses across the United States. In the letter, Senator Braun identifies Xylazine as a priority for confiscation at all U.S. points of entry and emphasizes the importance of border security to curb illegal drug trafficking.
Senator Braun writes:
“I write today to focus your attention to an urgent and growing public health concern. Xylazine, a veterinary drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the sedation of large animals, is now being consumed as a street drug throughout the United States.’ Xylazine causes fatal poisoning and severe skin wounds, including necrosis – the rotting of human tissue that may ultimately require amputation. We call on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to provide clarity on the status of xylazine-related border countermeasures.â€

Police Department’s street crimes unit Detectives Beitler, Ward, and Vanderburgh
Prosecutor’s Office investigator Jon Carter for their diligent efforts in removing this
a dangerous person from the streets and collecting evidence which led to a strong
conviction.
“This case exemplifies the significant and dangerous tie between drug dealing in
our community and violent gun crime. These children will forever be traumatized by what
they witnessed and the families are left to suffer. Today’s sentencing affirms that drug
dealing and committing a violent crime in Vanderburgh County are subject to the most
severe sanctions under Indiana law—we are pleased that this Defendant will spend the
rest of his life behind bars and out of our community.â€
