19 Indiana wood manufacturers recognized on ‘North America’s Largest’ list

INDIANAPOLIS (March 13, 2023) — Nineteen wood manufacturing firms from Indiana have been included on the 2023 FDMC 300 list, which ranks the largest cabinet, furniture, millwork, store fixture, office/contract and component producers in North America.

“Indiana is proud to be ranked as a top producer for so many wood products and to supply a large number of Hoosiers with good paying hardwood manufacturing jobs,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. “Wood is a renewable resource and provides a stability and quality to furniture like no other.”

Jasper-based MasterBrand Cabinets ranks No. 3 overall and is the largest on the list from Indiana. MasterBrand generated an estimated $3.3 billion in 2022 sales volume and employs roughly 14,000 people. Its manufacturing operations span over 20 plants across the United States and Mexico, totaling more than six million square feet to produce stock, semi-custom and custom fully assembled kitchen and bath cabinets and more.

“MasterBrand is proud of its Indiana roots, which can be traced back nearly 70 years to Celestine, Indiana,” said Dave Banyard, President and CEO, MasterBrand. “As a company, our purpose is building great experiences together and that would not be possible without our dedicated associates who make beautiful, functional and unique cabinets every day.”

Companies on the list are ranked according to annual sales. Four other Indiana firms rank among the top 35 companies on the list: Kimball International Inc. lands at No. 23, OFS Brands Inc. holds spot No. 31 and Genesis Products is No. 34.

Jasper-based Kimball International Inc. makes office, hospitality furniture and cabinet products. In 2022, the company’s sales totaled an estimated $665 million. Kimball International Inc. operates nine plants across the U.S. and Mexico and employs 2,800 people.

Huntingburg-based OFS Brands Inc. posted estimated sales of $490 million in 2022. OFS owns 10 U.S. manufacturing plants totaling 2 million square feet with 1,986 employees. The company makes contract/office furniture; desks, filing storage, conference tables, office chairs and office seating; and healthcare, education and hospitality furniture.

Goshen-based Genesis Products makes wood panels, wood interior products and other wood products for leading manufacturers in the RV, manufactured housing, hospitality and other industries. In 2022, the company’s sales totaled and estimated $380 million. Genesis Products operates 14 manufacturing plants across the U.S. totaling 1.5 million square feet and employs 1,150 people.

While not headquartered in Indiana, five other top-25 firms on the list host at least one manufacturing plant in Indiana. Those are Cabinetworks Group; American Woodmark Corp.; Dorel Industries Inc.; MJB Wood Group; and Quanex North American Fenestration.

“This industry is an incredible asset for Indiana agriculture,” said Chris Gonso, ISDA’s Hardwood Program Manager. “Many of our Hoosier companies have been on the FDMC list for many years, which shows how strong this industry is for economic potential in the agricultural industry.”

Indiana’s hardwood industry has an annual economic impact of more than $10 billion and supports 70,000 jobs. Indiana’s Hardwood Strategy aims to grow these numbers by promoting the expansion of current wood processing facilities, attracting new companies to the state, educating consumers and businesses on the sustainability of the hardwoods industry and seeking opportunities to increase the value of Indiana’s hardwood products.

The complete list of Indiana-based wood manufactures earning a spot in the 2023 FDMC 300 is below:

Columbus North High School Student Named Poetry Out Loud State Champion

0

Indianapolis, Indiana) The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC), in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, announced today that Sreepadaarchana Munjuluri (pictured right), a junior at Columbus North High School, is the 2023 Indiana Poetry Out Loud State Champion. Munjuluri will be representing Indiana in the 2023 Poetry Out Loud National Finals.

This is Sreepada’s second year participating in Poetry Out Loud. Sreepada loves exploring literature, not just in English but also in her native language Telugu, and Sanskrit. In her free time, she plays the violin and practices the Bharatanatyam dance. In the future, she hopes to be a global health advocate and believes that communication through various mediums (such as poetry) is the key to solving the world’s problems, and is the most beautiful aspect of the human experience.

Munjuluri participated in Poetry Out Loud as part of the Indiana Humanities statewide outreach program.

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. This year, over 1,000 high school students across Indiana participated in Poetry Out Loud. Fourteen state finalists competed on March 4 for the title of State Champion.

“The Poetry Out Loud program is a unique opportunity for students to show their talents and creativity through poetry recitation. The students participating in the competition have incredible skills, passion, and determination, and the program is a wonderful example of the powerful role that creativity plays in the classroom,” said Stephanie Haines, IAC Arts Education and Accessibility Manager.

The pitcher of the week award is the first of the season for Newman and USI Softball. Newman also represented USI on the 2023 OVC Preseason Players to Watch List.

In earning the honor, Newman went 4-0 last week, picking up wins against Creighton University, Long Island University, and two wins against Morehead State University. The sophomore allowed just one earned run in a 5-3 win against Long Island to conclude a trip to The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida for USI.

Hart slams the door as Blazers complete weekend sweep of Schoolcraft

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University baseball team closed out their busy week of playing nine games in nine days by picking up the weekend sweep over Schoolcraft College with a 5-4 victory at Jerry Blemker Field Sunday.

The Blazers got off to another slow start Sunday afternoon with the Ocelots scoring in the first inning in all four games this weekend. Schoolcraft pushed one across in the first to take the early 1-0 lead.

VU would get on the board in the third after a lead off single by freshman Trevor Newman (Fort Wayne, Ind.).

Newman would come around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Ethan Burdette (Linton, Ind.) to even the score.

Burdette would score on an RBI single by freshman Carter Whitehead (Huntingburg, Ind.) to give VU a 2-1 lead after three innings of play.

Schoolcraft would answer back with a run in the fourth to even the score at 2-2.

Vincennes would regain the lead in the sixth after Carter Whitehead led off the inning with a single. Whitehead would later score on a throwing error by Schoolcraft.

Sophomore Dale Coy (Evansville, Ind.) came through later in the inning with a two-out double and would be driven in on an RBI single by Trevor Newman.

VU would tack on an insurance run in the seventh after sophomore Colton Evans (Henderson, Ky.) reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on an error.

Evans would score on an RBI single by Carter Whitehead, giving him three hits and two RBIs on the day.

This run would prove crucial for the Blazers after Schoolcraft looked to avoid the sweep with a late comeback and were able to get a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth.

The Ocelots had the tying run on first with no outs before VU sophomore closer Xavier Hart (Jeffersonville, Ind.) entered from the bullpen to strikeout the final three Schoolcraft batters of the day and complete the four-game weekend sweep for the Trailblazers.

“Our hitters took advantage of their mistakes today,” VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “We didn’t quite swing it as well as he had all weekend, but Schoolcraft’s starter was pretty solid today. Ethan Burdette really set the table for us today getting on base three times. Plus, two RBIs and three hits by Whitehead. A double by Dale Coy and an RBI down in the order by Newman. Kade Hinton got a sac bunt down and walked.”

“The positive thing, again, out of this is that a lot of guys contributed at the plate,” Barney added. “Hopefully we can keep that rolling into next weekend.”

Sophomore Jake Stuteville (Rockport, Ind.) got the start on the mound for the Blazers and threw five plus innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out five.

Freshman Logan Medsker (Marshall, Ill.) was the first out of the bullpen for VU, throwing two shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.

Freshman Aaron Fenn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) came in to pitch the eighth inning and allowed two runs on three hits and striking out one.

Xavier Hart entered in the ninth with runners on first and second with no outs and would continue to strike out all three batters he faced to close out the win.

“Jake gave us a solid outing,” Barney said. “He gave us a chance to win and kept them to two runs. He had a quality start, but we’ve got to stay out of the walks and hit by pitches. Then the bullpen did a great job. Medsker came in and gave us two innings. Aaron Fenn did a great job in his inning and then you have Xavier Hart closing it out with three strikeouts. It was a really good job on the back end from our bullpen today.”

The Trailblazers will now have a week to prepare for their next opponent when VU opens Mid-West Athletic Conference (MWAC) play next weekend by hosting Danville Area Community College Saturday, March 18 for a doubleheader with game one beginning at 2 p.m. eastern.

The four-game conference series will then shift to Danville, Ill. on Sunday, March 19 for the final two games of the series. First pitch Sunday is set for 2 p.m. eastern.

“The biggest thing we can, hopefully, take out of this weekend is confidence,” Barney said. “We also hopefully got used to what it was like to play four games in a weekend. If we can get those two things out of this weekend and have a solid week of practice ahead of us to get ourselves ready to go for Danville next weekend, then we feel good about where we stand right now.”
