Unlimited Spring Yard Waste Service Begins April 3 for Eligible EWSU Residential Customers 

(EVANSVILLE, IN) – Now that spring has arrived it is time to clear away leaves and debris, trim trees and prune bushes to get the yard ready for summer. To accommodate the extra yard waste, Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) will offer the annual Spring Yard Waste Service during the first four full weeks in April.

Stating Monday, April 3, and continuing through Friday, April 28, Republic Services will pick up unlimited bags or containers of yard waste from eligible EWSU customers at no extra charge.

How it Works

  • Republic Services, the contractor for the City’s trash and recycling services, will pick up unlimited bags, containers, or bundles of yard waste on the day of your regular trash collection.
  • Yard waste must be properly contained in plastic bags or tied in bundles no more than 4 feet long and 2 feet in diameter weighing less than 50 pounds, or loose in containers weighing less than 50 pounds.
  • Yard waste must be placed next to your City trash cart.
  • No special bags are required. The yard waste will be taken to the landfill.

What is Allowed

  • Spring Yard Waste Service is for organic yard waste like leaves, grass clippings, hedge and tree trimmings, garden plants and garden trimmings.

Who is Eligible

  • Spring Yard Waste Service is available to City residents who pay for trash service with their EWSU water and sewer bill. Apartment complexes, mobile home communities, businesses, commercial customers and County residents are not eligible.

NOTE: Republic Services will accept extra yard waste placed curbside next to the City-issued trash cart onlyduring the annual four-week Spring Yard Waste Service period April 3 – 28. EWSU residential customers may put yard waste inside the regular 96-gallon trash cart throughout the year.

USI Summer Enrichment Camp to begin May 31

The University of Southern Indiana Summer Enrichment Camp (SEC) will be offered to children entering kindergarten through grade six (based on the grade they will enter in Fall 2023). The camp will begin on May 31 and will run through July 28. Camp opens daily at 7 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m.

SEC offers an environment encouraging children to develop their capabilities and interests at their own pace based on individual needs. The program recognizes the uniqueness of children and provides positive encouragement for their continued growth while having fun.

This year’s SEC activities will include crafts, swimming, games, on-site opportunities (utilizing the entire campus) and more. Enrichment experiences will be offered in art, science, fitness, technology and other interests staff bring to camp. Every activity will be tied to a weekly theme communicated to families of students participating in the camp. Four field trips will also take place over the course of the summer.

Full-time and part-time spaces are available, but priority will be given to families requiring full-time, full-summer care. Early enrollment was offered to 2023 campers last fall, so several spots have already been filled.

Total SEC fees for all USI employees and students are:

  • Full-time (Monday-Friday): $1,482.33
  • Part-time (three days/week): $1,116.04
  • Part-time (two days/week): $815.04

Total SEC fees for community members (non-USI employees) are:

  • Full-time (Monday-Friday): $1584.56
  • Part-time (three days/week): $1,167.80
  • Part-time (two days/week): $866.38

Fees include all costs except for lunches (parents send) and the cost of a life jacket for swimming (if needed).

A $60 pre-enrollment fee (per child) is required and can be paid online.

Johansen Named CSCAA Men’s Diving Coach of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On its own, Indiana diving would have been the 12th-highest scoring team at the 2023 NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

Diving contributed 104 points to IU swimming and diving’s fourth-place finish at the national meet, scoring 42.5 more points than any other diving squad. For that dominance, Indiana diving head coach Drew Johansen has been named the CSCAA Division I Men’s Diving Coach of the Year, as announced by the coaches association on Monday (March 27).

Johansen is now a three-time CSCAA coach of the year after winning the women’s coaching award last season and the men’s again in 2018. The ninth-year head coach has produced five diving national championships in the last five years, including two in 2023.

Three Indiana divers scored at least 30 points at the national meet, combining for five medals. Senior Andrew Capobianco led the group with 37, followed by sophomores Carson Tyler (35) and Quinn Henninger (32).

IU had its best performance of the meet on day three in the 3-meter springboard final as the trio all finished within the top four. In his final performance as a collegiate diver, Capobianco captured his third-career 3-meter title with a program-record 522.60 score; his lowest dive earned 81 points, and he outscored the field by 74.3 points. Henninger earned his first-career national medal, taking bronze with 425.40 points while Tyler placed fourth with a 415.50.

The next day, Tyler earned the program’s first platform diving title, outdueling Tennessee’s Bryden Hattie 476.60-455.10. On his fifth dive, Tyler created space with a perfect score on his Back 3 ½ Somersault Tuck to earn a 99.00. He clinched the title with an 81-point dive in round six. Henninger took another bronze in the event with a 408.60.

In the first day of diving, Capobianco earned silver on the 1-meter board with a scored of 439.45 that was just 4.50 short of the title. Among his accolades, Capobianco totaled three national titles, six NCAA medals and 12 All-America honors as a collegiate diver.

Freshman Maxwell Weinrich was IU’s fourth qualifier for the NCAA championships and competed in all four events.

IU men’s diving foreshadowed it NCAA success with a similarly dominant performance at the Big Ten Championships, helping the swim and dive program to its second straight conference title. For the second-straight year, Indiana swept the diving titles. Over the week, IU totaled seven medals and, on the final day, swept the platform diving medals with four Hoosiers on the podium. Capobianco and Tyler shared the Big Ten Co-Diver of the Championships award.

USI Men’s Basketball honored with OVC Team Sportsmanship Award​​​​​​​ Story

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball received with the 2022-23 Ohio Valley Conference Team Sportsmanship Awards in a release from the conference office today. The Screaming Eagles honored along with Tennessee Tech University, who received the award for women’s basketball.

Voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of the respective sports, the team awards are bestowed upon the Conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and fans.

“Without sportsmanship there are truly no meaningful victories,” said Beth DeBauche, OVC Commissioner. “The recipients of the OVC Team Sportsmanship awards should accept this award with great pride for their fellow competitors have made it clear their teams exemplify the best in intercollegiate athletics. In receiving this prestigious honor other competitors are saying these student-athletes compete with class, respect their opponents and value fair play. That is quite a compliment as those are all traits that will lead to true victories throughout the course of life.”

The 2022-23 school year marks the 18th year the team sportsmanship honors have been awarded. It marks the first award for the USI men’s program and the third award for the TTU women’s program (2017-18, 2019-20).

Implemented in August 2005, the team honors are the most recent addition to an awards program that recognizes and celebrates sportsmanship within the Conference. In 1998, the league established the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to a male or female student-athlete of junior or senior status who best exemplifies the characteristics of the late Morehead State student-athlete, coach and administrator. Five years later, the Conference added the OVC Sportsmanship Award, presented annually to the member institution selected by its peers to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA.

In 1995, the Ohio Valley Conference implemented a first-of-its-kind “Sportsmanship Statement,” a policy promoting principles of fair play, ethical conduct and respect for one’s opponent.  The statement answered the challenge of the NCAA Presidents Commission to improve sportsmanship in collegiate athletics, and has become a model for others to follow across the nation.

Eagles Grounded with Tough Weekend in Alabama

GULF SHORES, Ala. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Golf finished their second tournament of the spring with a 13th place finish at the Craft Farms Intercollegiate in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
 
The Screaming Eagles finished the tournament with a team score of 902 (+38) after shooting 305-306-291 on the two-day tournament. USI also recorded the fourth most pars on the tournament with 161.
 
Sophomore Jason Bannister (Laguna Niguel, California) lead the Eagles, finishing tied for 17th after shooting a 219 (+3) with a 72-77-70. Bannister was one of nine golfers to finish with an even 3.00 score on par threes, the fourth lowest in the tournament.
 
Senior Zach Williams (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) and freshman Carter Goebel (Breese, Illinois) rounded out the top-50 finishers for USI. Williams finished tied for 46th after finishing with a 226 (+10) and shooting 76-74-76. Goebel finished tied for 49th after finishing the tournament with a 227 (+11) and shooting a 76-78-73.
 
Junior Bryce Kirchner (North Vernon, Indiana) was next on the leaderboards for the Eagles, finishing 62nd after ending the tournament with a 231 (+15) and shooting an 81-78 on day one while finishing the tournament with an even 72 on Monday. Junior Trevor Laub (Edwardsville, Illinois) finished out the competitors for USI, finishing with a 238 (+22) and shooting 83-77-78 on the tournament.
 
Williams and Bannister finished the tournament with 36 total pars made on the tournament, the fifth most out of all golfers. Goebel finished right behind the two with 35 total pars made.

The Eagles are right back to action on April 3-4 when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the Ernie Denham Classic at Standard Country Club.

Kato ranks in top 15 following round one for UE

Men rank in 13th spot

 PAWLEY’S ISLAND, S.C. – Finishing the opening round of the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate with a 1-under 71, Masatoyo Kato shot the low round of the day for the University of Evansville men’s golf team.

Kato’s 1-under-par effort has him in a tie for 12th place with the first of three rounds in the books at True Blue Golf Club.  Carson Parker finished the day with a 1-over 73 to rank second for the Purple Aces and in a tie for 31st place on the leaderboard.

Third on the squad was Caleb Wassmer.  His 4-over 76 has him tied for 67th.  He was followed by Isaac Rohleder and Daniil Romashkin.  Rohleder totaled a 77 in the first 18 holes while Romashkin was one behind him with a 78.  Individual Henry Kiel carded an 81 in the first round.

Evansville is in 13th place in the team standings with a 297.  UE is just four strokes outside of the top 10.  Valparaiso and Delaware had the top scores of the day, each posting a 285 to pace third-place Troy by two shots.

Jared Nelson from the University of Connecticut leads the individual standing.  He completed the opening round with a 4-under 68.

Round two will take place on Tuesday morning.

UE’s ROBERTS NAMED MVC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Evansville fifth-year outfielder Eric Roberts (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, after belting four home runs in four UE victories last week.

Roberts slugged 1.111 on the week, while launching four home runs, scoring seven runs, and driving in 10 more to help UE to a 4-0 week at SIUE and Missouri State.  Roberts homered in three of UE’s four contests, including going 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI in the Purple Aces’ 7-4 series finale victory at Missouri State.  In the three-game Valley set against the Bears, Roberts hit .462 (6-for-13) with a double, three home runs, five runs scored and nine RBI to help UE sweep the defending MVC Tournament champions.

Roberts also hit a lead-off home run at SIUE last Wednesday to give UE a lead it would never lose in an 11-7 victory over the Cougars.  Roberts also went 2-for-2 in the stolen base department, and currently leads the MVC in home runs (nine), RBI (32) and stolen bases (10).

Evansville will return home to German American Bank Field at Charles H. Braun Stadium this week for four games.  UE will bring a 16-7 overall record into Wednesday night’s 6 p.m. home contest against Southeast Missouri State.  The Purple Aces have won nine games in a row and 16 out of 18 overall.  The current nine-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the country, and UE will be shooting for 10-straight wins on Wednesday night.  UE has not won 10-straight games since the 2006 team won the final 10 regular-season games to win the 2006 MVC regular-season title.
