Harvesting Healthy Habits During National Nutrition Month
Harvesting collard greens and making whole wheat crackers from scratch is not a typical day on the job for me as the Deputy Under Secretary of USDA’s Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. But I can assure you it is the perfect recipe for a great day at work! Earlier this month, I had the chance to spend the morning at Watkins Elementary School in Washington, D.C. with Admiral Rachel Levine, Assistant Secretary for Health of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There, we joined some incredible 5th grade students during their FoodPrints class and witnessed first-hand the transformational power of nutrition education. And best of all—it was delicious!
Federal nutrition programs do more than give kids food to eat. They teach children about the importance of nutrition and help them develop healthy habits. The Food and Nutrition Service works with an amazing array of partners to help build a brighter, healthier future for America’s children. One such partner, FRESHFARM, hosted our visit to Watkins in honor of National Nutrition Month. FRESHFARM’s FoodPrints curriculum integrates gardening, cooking, and nutrition education through a model of partnerships, standards-based lessons, cafeteria connections, and food access.
Admiral Levine and I were delighted to be part of the hands-on lesson that day. We started the morning out in the school garden to harvest the collard greens and later learned about their nutritional value as we prepped the greens for cooking. The result—a yummy dish of fresh greens with ginger and caramelized onions! As if that weren’t enough, we also learned about whole grains and had the chance to grind up wheat berries with a hand-turned grinder to make our own flour! We might have cheated just a little bit by using pre-milled flour to then make delicious, yet surprisingly simple, whole-wheat crackers which provided a nice crunch to accompany our greens. I also made the crackers at home that weekend and got rave reviews from my family!
Our morning at Watkins was just a little peek into the important work that FRESHFARM and other SNAP-Ed providers do every day. We all have a vital role to play in improving child health and nutrition. The most effective way to impact change is to set children up to thrive early in life. The skills and knowledge that the students receive through programs like these puts them on the path towards lifelong health and well-being.
Trailblazers score big early in walk-off win over Frontier
VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Trailblazers closed out the week on a high note after picking up their second win over an NJCAA Division I opponent in five days after defeating Frontier Community College 12-4 at Jerry Blemker Field Sunday evening.
After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Trailblazers set the tone early at the plate in the bottom half of the inning, with the first four batters reaching base, including a two-RBI double by freshman Carter Whitehead (Huntingburg, Ind.).
Vincennes did not just stop there however, with sophomores Dale Coy (Evansville, Ind.) and Mahkai Pelzer (Douglasville, Ga.) adding to the lead with RBI singles later in the inning before sophomore Kaden Elliott (New Albany, Ind.) blew the game open with a bases clearing three-RBI triple to give the Blazers eight runs in the first and VU an early 8-1 lead.
Even after sending 12 batters to the plate in the first, VU was still not done, with sophomores Kobe Bartlett (Rockport, Ind.) and Colin Long coming through with back-to-back doubles in the second, with Long’s netting him his second RBI of the day.
Later in the second, Mahkai Pelzer came through again with another RBI single, giving him two hits and two RBIs in as many innings as Vincennes took complete control with an 11-1 lead.
The scoring would slow as the Blazers went to their bench and got some more playing time for a few players.
Frontier would avoid the 10-run rule in the fifth with a pair of runs and extended the game with another run in the sixth to cut the VU lead to 11-4.
VU would still look to end the game early in the seventh after a leadoff single by freshman Bracey Breneman (Linton, Ind.) and a walk by freshman Bryton Griffy (Louisville, Ill.) freshman Tucker Helton (Terre Haute, Ind.) came through with an RBI single giving the Blazers an eight-run lead and ending the game on a walk-off.
“We jumped out early on their pitcher and did a really good job,†VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “Our guys did a great job of scoring 11 runs in two innings. They obviously blanked us for the next four innings, but we were able to get a run in the seventh to cap it off.â€
“A lot of guys stepped up for us today,†Barney added. “Burdette got on base three times. Elliott had three RBIs. Whitehead comes up with a big two-RBI double. Long gets two RBIs, Coy gets an RBI, Mahkai Pelzer goes three for three with three singles, a hit by pitch and two RBIs. So, a lot of guys contributing throughout the lineup.â€
“It’s experience,†Barney said of sending 16 different batters to the plate Sunday. “It’s at bats and an opportunity to see live pitching. It’s an opportunity to get into a game situation and see what you can do because down the road we are going to need some of those guys. I’d love to tell you that over the last 24 games of the regular season everybody is going to be healthy, but that’s just not the way it works in baseball. So some other guys are going to have to step up at different points throughout the season and today we were just trying to get some guys in.â€
Freshman Jace Parnin (Fort Wayne, Ind.) got the start on the mound for Vincennes and threw three innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four as he picked up his second winning decision of the season.
Freshman Josh McCormick (Indianapolis, Ind.) was the first out of the pen, throwing two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three.
Sophomore Dawson Blaylock (Eaton, Ohio) entered to pitch the sixth, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two, while sophomore Jake Stuteville (Rockport, Ind.) pitched the seventh, allowing one base runner and striking out one.
“On the mound, Jace Parnin gets the win after throwing three innings,†Barney said. “Josh McCormick deserved a better fate than what he had today in his two innings. Then we had Blaylock and Stuteville come in and both throw okay and we got what we had hoped to get out of them. Hopefully this helps us get ready for another conference weekend next weekend.â€
The Trailblazers will return to Mid-West Athletic Conference play for the remainder of the season, started off by a very tough weekend coming up against No. 2-ranked Heartland Community College Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 at Jerry Blemker Field.
First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m. eastern, with first pitch on Saturday set for 12 p.m. eastern.
“Hopefully it’s just confidence and experience,†Barney said about his team’s takeaways from this past week. “Those are the biggest things that we have to have right now. We are starting to get our pitching mapped out a little bit better than we have the first half of the season and we are still changing some things up within the rotation. Between all of that, hopefully we feel better as a club because we’ve got a big weekend with Heartland coming up.â€

Eagles post 1st OVC win with thrilling 12-9 victory USI snaps 11-game losing streak
ST. CHARLES, Mo. – University of Southern Indiana Baseball recorded its first Ohio Valley Conference win and snapped an 11-game losing streak with a thrilling 12-9 win at Lindenwood University Sunday afternoon in St. Charles, Missouri. USI watched its record go to 8-20, 1-5 in the OVC, while Ball State goes to 5-23, 2-4 OVC.
The Screaming Eagles had command of the game for the first seven-and-a-half innings of action by building a 9-4 lead. USI scored three in the first for a 3-0 advantage; increase the lead to 6-3 after six frames with one in the fifth and two in the sixth; and appeared to have sealed the victory with three in the top of the eighth for a 9-4 lead.
Lindenwood, however, bounced back to tie the game, 9-9, with a five-run eighth inning and set the stage for USI’s three-run, game-winning rally in the ninth.
The Eagles regained the lead, 10-9, when junior rightfielder Steven Molinet (Elberfeld, Indiana) singled in junior first baseman Jack Ellis (Jeffersonville, Indiana), who had doubled to lead off the inning. Molinet, who reached third on a single by junior second baseman Nolan Cook (Edwardsville, Indiana), crossed the plate on a wild pitch to re-extend the lead to 11-9.
Cook would score the final tally of the game and capped off the 12-9 final on ground out by junior leftfielder Gavin McLarty (Buckner, Kentucky).
For the game, USI was led at the plate by senior second baseman/catcher Lucas McNew (Floyds Knobs, Indiana), who was four-for-five with two runs scored and three RBIs. McNew’s three RBIs moves him into a tie for eighth all-time with former USI All-American Kevin Brown (1992-94) with 145, while climbing to 10th all-time at USI in doubles with his fifth inning two-bagger.
On the mound, USI freshman left-hander Will Kiesel (Wadesville, Indiana) picked up the victory in relief. Kiesel (1-1) got the Eagles out of the eighth inning with the scored tied at 9-9 before throwing a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two in his 1.1 frames.
Up Next for the Eagles:Â
USI comes home to play next week to host a three-game series with Southeast Missouri State University. SEMO raised its record to 16-14 overall and 5-1 in the OVC after completing a series sweep of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a 17-6 win Sunday in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
The Redhawks, who have the most wins in the OVC after the first weekend, have won four-straight and eight of their last 10 games.
USI leads the all-time series with SEMO, 26-23, and will be playing the Redhawks for the first time since 1994. SEMO swept the last doubleheader in 1994, but USI has won eight of the last 10 games between 1990 and 1994.
