Tri-State Food Bank Launches Innovative Online Map to Help Connect Neighbors with Food Pantries and Programs

New digital tools increase access to food with easy-to-use features 

Evansville, IN (March 28, 2023) – Tri-State Food Bank (TSFB) announced today the launch of Vivery, an innovative platform and digital map to help families and individuals experiencing food insecurity connect with vital food resources in their community and surrounding areas. The new mobile-friendly map, located on the Tri-State Food Bank website (www.tristatefoodbank.org), increases access to the fresh and nutritious food our neighbors need to thrive.

Tri-State Food Bank works with a network of over 300 food pantries and feeding programs throughout 33 counties in the Tri-State. With the help of volunteers, donors, and member agencies, Tri-State Food Bank distributes over 14 million pounds of perishable and non-perishable foods annually to local individuals, children, and families who face hunger.

The Vivery platform, developed by the Thierer Family Foundation, helps food banks and food pantries remove obstacles preventing neighbors from finding food. Digital features include an interactive online map with a searchable directory of food distribution sites with up-to-date schedules, times, directions, and programs. Tri-State Food Bank’s website allows for users to easily change the language so neighbors can access the food they need in the language they speak. Users can also search by zip code or address to ensure they find the right food at the right time and place.

Glenn Roberts, Executive Director of Tri-State Food Bank, comments, “This interactive, easy-to-use online map will be a powerful tool to help our neighbors in need find food assistance. We hope that by easing a family’s burden of locating food resources they will gain more peace of mind in knowing where their next meal is coming from.”

Our neighbors will have improved access to vital services in our communities and will be able to see locations near them, their operating days and hours, services offered, documentation required (if any), and much more!”

This project was made possible by the Thierer Family Foundation in partnership with Tri-State Food Bank to ensure people throughout the Tri-State could have equal access to food. The foundation strategically funds innovative technology projects, including Vivery, to modernize access to food and significantly change the way an organization can serve its target audience.

The second round of USI mountain bike trails set to move forward

Trail Heads – Southwest Indiana has successfully raised the 50% matching dollars for a $50,000 Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) grant that will move forward a second phase of trails to be built on the University of Southern Indiana campus.

The project includes construction of a 2.75-mile Campus Loop and 0.5-mile Broadway Connector Trail, as well as trailhead kiosks and trail signage. The new single-track loop, with beginner-level features, will be constructed on more than 30 acres of wooded property adjacent to campus apartments.

With the matching dollars in place, state grant funds are expected to be released later this spring. Brad Scales, Principal of Trelcru Inc., says he expects to begin work on the trails in late summer or early fall.

“We’re excited to see this project funded and able to move forward later this year,” said Jim Wolfe, USI Director of Facility Operations and Planning. “These trails will be a nice addition to our quality-of-life offerings for students and the rest of our campus community, as well as being an outdoor recreation asset we can offer to the local community.”

USI, in collaboration with Trelcru, recently broke ground on the construction of a one-acre mountain bike park on the west side of the USI campus. The bike park includes three downhill flow trail runs complete with dirt jumps and bermed corners, offering beginner, intermediate and expert level experiences. Funded through a $25,000 grant from the CenterPoint Energy Foundation, these trails are the first dedicated mountain bike trails on campus and are expected to be completed early this spring.

Southern Indiana Dance Marathon returns April

Southern Indiana Dance Marathon (SIDM) will return to the University of Southern Indiana for its 11th year on Saturday, April 1. This year’s SIDM will begin at noon Saturday, April 1 and continue until 9 p.m. in the Screaming Eagles Complex (SEC).

SIDM needs support to meet its $62,000 fundraising goal. Its goal represents the 62 children who enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute.

“Southern Indiana Dance Marathon is such a great event and organization to be a part of,” says Maxwell Holder ’25, SIDM Co-President. “By coming together, we can help change the lives of so many in need. Our organization will continue to dance for children who cannot. We will continue to stand with the children and families to make sure they never feel alone.”

USI students and employees can get involved by registering to attend the nine-hour event or by donating. Registration is $25 and includes event entry and snacks/meals for the day. The public is invited to donate. All funds raised go to the Riley Children’s Foundation to support groundbreaking pediatric research, patient programs in need of additional funding, Riley Maternity, and Newborn Health and family support programs, such as child life and social work.

EPA Announces Proposal to Improve Public Awareness of Drinking Water Quality

WASHINGTON (March 28, 2023) — Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would strengthen the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) Rule making annual drinking water quality reports with important public health information more accessible to residents and businesses across the country. A Consumer Confidence Report, sometimes called an “Annual Drinking Water Quality Report,” summarizes information about the local drinking water for the previous year. EPA’s proposal would support public education by more clearly communicating important information in water quality reports and improving access to the reports.

“It’s crucial that the public has access to the most relevant information about the drinking water coming out of their taps,” said EPA Assistant Administrator for Water Radhika Fox. “The Consumer Confidence Report is the primary way local water systems communicate with the people they serve, and EPA’s proposed rule would improve the information communities receive, in addition to making it more accessible.”

When finalized, EPA’s proposal would:

  • Improve the readability, clarity, and of water quality reports
  • Enhance risk communication
  • Encourage modern electronic delivery options
  • Clarify information regarding lead levels and efforts to reduce lead in drinking water
  • Provide translation for customers with limited English proficiency
  • Require reports be issued twice a year (for systems that serve 10,000 or more people)

Additionally, EPA’s proposal would require states to submit compliance monitoring data to EPA. While states already collect compliance monitoring data, current EPA regulations limit the data available to the EPA. When final, this action will help EPA identify trends both geographically and demographically, which will improve transparency and accountability, and amplify best practices that maximize direct benefits in communities.

Romashkin posts low round of the day for UE men

Aces rank in 16th place entering final round

PAWLEY’S ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Daniil Romashkin recorded a 1-over 73 to pace the University of Evansville men’s golf team in the second round of the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate.

Romashkin made the largest jump of the day for the Purple Aces, following up his opening-round 78 with a 73 on Tuesday at True Blue Golf Club.  He heads into Wednesday’s final round with a 151, which is third for the UE squad and tied for 71st overall.

With two rounds in the books, the low score of UE belongs to Carson Parker.  After shooting a 73 in the first 18 holes, Parker recorded a solid 75 in the second round.  His 148 is 52nd on the leaderboard.  Behind him is Masatoyo Kato.  A 1-under 71 in the first round was the low score of the event for UE.  Kato carded a 79 on Tuesday to rank in a tie for 62nd with a 150.

Third on the team is Romashkin with a 151 with Isaac Rohleder and Caleb Wassmer following.  Rohleder opened play with a 77 before improving in Tuesday’s round, notching a 75.  His 152 is tied for 78th.  Wassmer tallied a 76 on the first day while recording a 79 in the second 18.  He has a 155.  Individual Henry Kiel was the third Aces player to improve from their opening day score.

Kiel finished Monday’s action with an 81 before dropping his score by five strokes on Tuesday to a 76.

Troy University holds a healthy 9-stroke lead with 18 holes remaining.  With a 563, the Trojans pace Delaware, who has a 572.  Jared Nelson of UConn continues to lead the individual standings.  After pacing the tournament with a 4-under 68 on Monday, Nelson carded a 3-under 69 in round two.  His 137 is two strokes in front of a second-place tie.

The third and final round is set to take place on Wednesday morning.

Men’s Soccer to Begin Ohio Valley Conference Play Next Fall​​​​​​​

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer will be joining the Ohio Valley Conference for the upcoming season league officials announced Tuesday. This will be the first season for men’s soccer in the OVC, the conference will consist of four current members as well as four affiliate members.

The Screaming Eagles will join current OVC members Eastern Illinois University, Lindenwood University, and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the inaugural season. EIU and Lindenwood joined USI in the Summit League last season while SIUE competed in the Missouri Valley Conference.

SIUE was the most successful of the four teams last season, finishing 5-9-2, finishing sixth in the MVC. Lindenwood finished with the most wins of the three Summit League schools, 3-11-1, while USI finished above both in the final standings with a record of 2-12-3. EIU finished last season 1-12-3.

The four affiliate members that will be joining the OVC will include Chicago State University, Houston Christian University, University of Incarnate Word, and Liberty University.

HCU was the most successful of the four new members, finishing ninth in the Western Athletic Conference with a 5-8-6 record. Liberty finished last season 3-6-6 and finished seventh in the Atlantic Sun Conference. UIW finished last season with a 2-13-1 record as an independent. CSU ended last season fifth in the Mid-American Conference with a 1-13-3 record.

USI finished last season with a 1-3-1 record against the new OVC field. The Eagles recorded their first NCAA Division I win since 1994 against EIU while also earning a draw with CSU. USI fell to Lindenwood twice and SIUE once.

VINCENNES, Ind., March 28, 2023 – Medical assistants are one of the highest-demand career paths in Indiana. Medical assistants work in healthcare settings performing both clinical and administrative tasks. Job duties can include scheduling appointments, taking and recording vital signs, and billing and coding procedures.

Vincennes University provides medical assistant training throughout Indiana and

collaborates with Indiana’s Next Level Jobs Program to provide funding to Indiana residents who qualify to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Training program for free.

Impressive opening round pushes Eagles to sixth place

BATAVIA, Ohio – University of Southern Indiana Women’s Golf shot an opening day score of 306 (+22) to position itself into a sixth-place finish at The Julie at the Elks Run Golf Course Tuesday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles’ two-round score of 624 (+56) is the best this season.
 
USI used a team effort to place within the top five of The Julie after the first round of action. Sophomore Baileigh Schneider (Huntingburg, Indiana) had another big first-round performance, shooting a 72 (+1) to sit in a tie for sixth and mark the lowest round score this season. Junior Katelyn Sayyalinh (Rockford, Illinois) also provided key strokes for the Eagles, sitting in a tie for 10th with a 74 (+3). USI ended the round in fifth with a 306 (+22).
 
The second round saw the Eagles perform a 318 (+34) to drop one spot in the standings. Schneider continued her hot stretch by adding a 76 (+5) to her score to finish the tournament six over par and in a tie for ninth place, the best finish in her collegiate career. Sayyalinh had a two-day score of 156 (+14) to place in a tie for 27th while junior Halle Gutwein (DeMotte, Indiana) tallied 157 (+15) to tie for 30th.
 
University of Wisconsin Green Bay won The Julie after a two-day total of 592 (+24) while Youngstown State University’s Madison Smithco and University of Indianapolis’ Cathi Graf shared a tie for first after shooting for par in two rounds.

Another trans bill—this one concerning inmates—looks to a final vote in the Senate

The Indiana Senate Tuesday advanced a bill to restrict gender reassignment surgery for inmates in Indiana prisons to a third reading and a final vote.

House Bill 1569 was authored by Rep. Peggy Mayfield, R-Martinsville, and passed through the Indiana House Courts and Criminal Code Committee and the full House as well as a Senate committee. It is among multiple bills targeting trans rights making their way through the General Assembly this session.

The bill would restrict the Department of Corrections from using any state resources to pay for hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery for inmates.

Senate Minority Leader Greg Taylor, D-Indianapolis, unsuccessfully offered an amendment to the bill providing that if an inmate paid for the surgery out of their own pocket, then the DOC would provide support and facilitate the procedure.

Taylor said this would be like “any other medically necessary procedure” for which the DOC must take the patient off premises to provide the service. 

Sponsors of the bill—Sen. Stacey Donato, R-Logansport, and Sen. Michael Young, R-Indianapolis—opposed the amendment.

Young asked whether this could create discipline or security problems and whether the inmate might have to move. 

“If we have to move those people from male prisons into female prisons and vice versa, I just think that would be a problem,” Young said.

Taylor told his colleagues to “look up the definition before you ask that question.”

“Educate yourself before you ask the question. Gender reassignment could be about taking a hormone. As simple as that. So before you come up here and ask questions, educate yourself,” Taylor said.

Taylor said the State of Indiana has an obligation to all DOC inmates to “provide medically necessary surgeries.” 

“My public policy position is that when someone needs a medically necessary procedure, even if they’re incarcerated, they have a human right to receive it,” Taylor said. 

“All I’m trying to do is carve out and say that if you have private pay insurance and you want to pay for it yourself, the DOC should provide and facilitate this medically necessary procedure.”

The bill is eligible for a final vote in the Senate later this week.
