Indiana Sweeps Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Awards

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following a fourth-place performance at the NCAA Championships and a second-straight Big Ten title, Indiana men’s swimming and diving swept the Big Ten’s postseason awards per the conference’s announcement on Wednesday (March 29).

All four honorees are, in a way, repeat winners. IU head swimming coach Ray Looze and seniors Brendan Burns and Andrew Capobianco all won men’s awards last year, while head diving coach Drew Johansen was the 2022 Big Ten Women’s Diving Coach of the Year.

At the NCAA Championships, three different Hoosiers won individual national titles, six program records were smashed, 10 medals were earned, and 10 IU athletes combined for 37 All-America honors. Indiana outperformed its No. 6 CSCAA national ranking as well as the psych sheet projections, which simulated a fifth-place performance.

Big Ten Swimming Coach of the Year: Ray Looze

Looze was named the Big Ten Swimming Coach of the Year for the 12th time in his career and seventh time on the men’s side. It’s his second-straight honor for the men as well as his sixth in eight years.

Looze preached relay culture all season long, and it paid off at the national meet. All five of IU’s relays had top-10 performances for the first time since the team’s third-place finish in 2019, accounted for 136 points, and all five finished higher than their seeding. Indiana’s 400 medley relay repeated as the national runner-up after beating the previous NCAA record and setting a program standard in 2:59.09.

Indiana had four of the conference’s top five scoring swimmers in Burns (46), senior Van Mathias (35), junior Tomer Frankel (30) and sophomore Josh Matheny (24). Burns, Mathias and Frankel all medaled as swimming tallied 275 points.

Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year: Drew Johansen

Johansen returns as men’s diving coach of the year for the first time since repeating from 2018-19. Adding his 2022 award for women’s coaching, Johansen is now a five-time Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Johansen led his group to a staggering 104 points at the national meet, 32.5 more points than any other diving team. IU diving recorded two national championships and five medal finishes, including the program’s first-ever NCAA title in platform diving via sophomore Carson Tyler.

Three IU divers scored at least 30 points and earned a medal; Capobianco won gold on 3-meter and silver on 1-meter to tally 37 points, sophomore Carson Tyler was the national champion on platform and fourth on 3-meter to collect 35 points, and sophomore Quinn Henninger earned bronze medals on both 3-meter and platform for 32 points.

Big Ten Swimmer of the Year: Brendan Burns

Repeating as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year, Burns also repeated as an NCAA Champion, though this time in a new event. After winning the 200-yard butterfly a year ago, Burns took the crown in the 100 back in 2023.

Burns posted a program record and the third-fastest time ever recorded in 43.61 to become IU’s first 100 backstroke champion in 15 years and its seventh overall. On the same night, Burns was the top finisher in the 100 fly consolation final, taking ninth place overall.

Burns finished top-10 in all six events he raced in, including relays. Individually, Burns was the national runner-up in the 200 fly in addition to his 100 back, 100 fly double performance. The senior helped IU to second place in the 400 medley relay, fourth place in the 800 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Big Ten Diver of the Year: Andrew Capobianco

Among his many accolades, Capobianco is now a four-time Big Ten Diver of the Year, the second-ever Big Ten athlete to win four times and first since Minnesota’s P.J. Bogart from 1993-96. Capobianco has won the award each of the last three seasons.

In his final NCAA 3-meter diving final, Andrew Capobianco gave a dominant performance to win his third national championship in the event. The senior’s lowest-scoring dive earned him 81.00 points as he tallied a program record 522.60 and outscored the field by 74.3 points. He ended the performance with an exclamation mark, earning 91.20 points on a forward 4 ½ somersault tuck.

The night before, Capobianco earned silver on the 1-meter springboard for the second-straight season. The fifth-year student-athlete closes his collegiate career a three-time national champion, six-time NCAA medalist and 12-time All-American.

Hinton’s grand slam gives Blazers road win at Olney Central

0

OLNEY, Ill. – The Vincennes University baseball team put a rough weekend behind them Wednesday after picking up a big road win at Olney Central College by the final score 12-6.

VU freshman Kade Hinton (Fort Wayne, Ind.) hit a big grand slam in the eighth inning to extend the VU lead as the Blazers came away with the win against an NJCAA Division I opponent.

The Blazers got on the board early at Olney Central, scoring in the second on an RBI single by freshman Jack Robinson (Mooresville, Ind.).

The Blue Knights would answer back on their home field with a big two-out rally to score five runs in the fourth.

Vincennes immediately answered back with a five-run inning of their own in the fifth, aided by a three-run error put in play by sophomore Dale Coy (Evansville, Ind.), followed by a two-run, pinch hit home run by sophomore Colton Evans (Henderson, Ky.), his seventh of the season.

Olney Central evened the score in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 6-6 ball game.

VU would hold their own and finally break the tie in the eighth inning after Colton Evans led off the inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error on a ball put in play by sophomore Nick Kapostasy (Cincinnati, Ohio).

The Trailblazers would break the game open later in the eighth with a grand slam by Kade Hinton, his second home run of the season.

VU would add an insurance run in the ninth after a leadoff single by sophomore Ethan Burdette (Linton, Ind.).

Burdette would come around to score on a bases loaded walk by Jack Robinson, giving him two RBIs on the day.

Olney Central would try to battle back in the bottom half after getting a pair of runners on base but were unable to push a run across as Vincennes came away with the 12-6 victory over the Blue Knights.

“We got some timely hitting today,” VU Head Baseball Coach Chris Barney said. “Timely hitting, good defense, it all comes into play and it was a good ball game by our guys all the way around. We also had a lot of different guys contribute today, which was really good.”

VU was led off on the mound by sophomore Xavier Hart (Jeffersonville, Ind.) who picked up his first start of the season and threw three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out seven.

Freshman Christian Pinson (Elizabethtown, Ky.) entered from the pen and ended up picking up his first winning decision of his collegiate career, throwing five inning of shutout baseball, allowing one hit and striking out six.

“Today, obviously, started for us on the bump,” Barney said. “Xavier Hart gave us a good outing for three innings, then struggled a little in the fourth when he got an error. But for a guy who is making his first start of the year, that’s pretty good.”

“Then with what Christian Pinson did, finishing out the game, throwing five innings for us was really good,” Barney added. “Hart and Pinson have done it for us this year and they continued to get it done today. For his first start of the season, Hart was really good and Christian really has some confidence out there right now. He’s thrown really well his last two outings, including up at Illinois Central.”

“We’re excited about it and hopefully we can start putting some quality starts together in back-to-back games and get something started tomorrow,” Barney said.

The Trailblazers will look to continue this momentum tomorrow when VU faces off against another NJCAA Division I opponent in Frontier Community College Thursday, March 30. First pitch tomorrow in Fairfield is set for 6 p.m. eastern.

This game is the first half of a two-game home-and-home series with the Bobcats, with the second game set for Friday, March 31 at 12 p.m. eastern at Jerry Blemker Field.

“The big thing about the win today is that it builds confidence,” Barney said. “We have to feel good about ourselves, especially after a tough weekend. We’ve got Aaron Fenn running out there for us tomorrow. We know he’ll throw strikes and give us a chance.”

“It’s another tough road game against a Division I opponent, who has been having some success this year,” Barney added. “Hopefully we can keep it rolling and continue to hit. Play good defense and come up with some timely hitting and have another good day tomorrow.”

Aces drop both contests

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – A pair of late rallies saw Lindenwood pick up two victories over the University of Evansville softball team on Tuesday afternoon at the Lou Brock Complex.
Game 1 – Lindenwood 7, UE 6 (8 innings)
Trailing by a 5-0 margin, Lindenwood scored seven runs in the final four innings to pick up a 7-6 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Evansville struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning.  Jess Willsey reached on a 1-out single and Jenna Nink followed with a triple to right center to score Willsey for the first run of the game.  After Sydney Kalonihea was hit by a pitch, Taylor Howe laced a 2-out single to left, bringing in Nink for the second run of the frame.
One inning later, the lead doubled for UE as two more runs would score.  Zoe Frossard drew a walk with one out and Willsey followed with a triple to add another run.  Later in the inning, Willsey made it a 4-0 game when she scored on a stolen base attempt by Dori Brown.  Alexa Davis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.
Lindenwood stormed back in the bottom half of the 5th, scoring three times.  UE got one of those runs back in the sixth thanks to the second RBI triple of the afternoon by Jenna Nink.  Just when it looked like momentum was back on Evansville’s side, the Lions added three more tallies to tie the game in the bottom of the frame.  An error by the Aces, coupled with three walks, saw Lindenwood knot the score at 6-6.
In the eighth, the Lions saw their first two batters reach before Irelynn West had the game-winning hit.  Theresa Snaidauf led Lindenwood with a 2-4 game with two runs scored.  West had three RBI in the game.  Willsey went 3-5 with three runs and an RBI for UE.  Mikayla Jolly made the start for the Aces, allowing one hit in three innings.  Elle Jarrett gave up five runs, four earned, in 2 1/3 innings while Sydney Weatherford saw one run score while walking three in 2/3 inning.  Erin Kleffman tossed the seventh and eighth and allowed the final run.
Game 2 – Lindenwood 4, UE 3
With Evansville holding a 3-1 lead, Lindenwood scored three runs in the fifth inning before finishing with a 4-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader.  The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame before the Aces countered with three runs in the second.
Jess Willsey led the inning off with a home run before Hannah Hood laced a double down the left field line.  Marah Wood followed up with an RBI single to score Hood.  With two outs, Wood scored on a Taylor Howe sacrifice fly.  After picking up three hits in the frame, the Aces recorded just two more over the final five innings as the Lions staged another late rally.
Two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth saw Lindenwood retake the lead before completing the 1-run victory.  Hood recorded two of the Aces’ five hits in the game while the Lions totaled four.  Megan Brenton made the start, allowing one run on two hits in four innings of work.  Paige McAllister tossed the final two frames and gave up three runs, one being earned.  This weekend, the Aces are back home for a 3-game set versus Belmont.
