Governor Braun Ends DEI Initiatives, Prioritizes “Level Playing Field of Merit, Excellence, and Innovation”

0

INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mike Braun today released a report on his administration’s progress to replace the divisive DEI political ideology with the level playing field of MEI — Merit, Excellence, and Innovation. This report is the fulfillment of the Governor’s directive in his January 14, 2025, executive order.

DEI mandates are divisive and often lead to inefficiency by focusing decisions on a political goal rather than on the goal of achieving the best outcomes for Hoosier taxpayers.

“Indiana has replaced the divisive, politically-charged DEI ideology with Merit, Excellence, and Innovation: a level playing field where every single Hoosier has the chance to get ahead with hard work.” – Governor Mike Braun

The executive order directed executive state agencies to review their DEI positions, departments, activities, procedures, and programs for compliance with the decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, a landmark Supreme Court case regarding race-based admissions and an update on how those programs have been revised or eliminated to comply with the executive order.

Governor Braun is releasing that report today, which outlines:

  • 350+ examples of DEI initiatives in state government programs.
  • 70 cases of DEI training, instruction, or programing for state employees which have been eliminated.
  • Hundreds of hours of time that will no longer be spent on DEI trainings and can now be spent on serving Hoosier taxpayers.
  • 34 grants within Indiana State Agencies that were conditioned on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, which all Hoosiers can now compete for.
  • 200 DEI initiatives in state agency policy and procedures which will now prioritize the values of merit, excellence, and innovation that bring us together rather than the things that divide us.

In celebration of National Lineworker Appreciation Day, CenterPoint Energy honors frontline workers who work through the hottest days and coldest nights to serve customers and communities

CenterPoint recognizes the vital role that electric utility workers play in delivering safe, reliable and resilient energy for customers and communities year-round

EVANSVILLE, Ind. July 10, 2025 — Every year, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and utilities across the country join together to observe National Lineworker Appreciation Day on July 10. This annual observance honors the life and work of Henry Miller, the first IBEW president, and our nation’s frontline electric workers. These dedicated workers serve their communities year-round during the hottest summers and coldest winters by helping deliver safe and reliable electric service to customers every day. These same lineworkers also answer the call for mutual assistance from neighboring utilities in other states by responding to wildfires, tornadoes, winter storms and other extreme weather events and natural disasters.

“We celebrate this day annually to recognize our highly skilled and highly trained workforce. Whether answering calls to install new service or restoring electric service following an extreme weather event, lineworkers serve as the first responders of our industry,” said Darin Carroll, CenterPoint’s Senior Vice President, Electric Business. “I want to thank our local Indiana CenterPoint linemen for the commitment and sacrifices made by both them and their families every day. A lineworker’s job is not an easy one, but on both blue-sky days and after major weather events, our team shows up, works hard, and delivers this critical service to our customers.”

CenterPoint’s Indiana electric lineworkers serve more than 150,000 metered customers in southwestern Indiana, maintaining approximately 1,000 circuit miles of transmission lines and approximately 7,300 miles of distribution lines. In addition to installing, maintaining and repairing electric infrastructure such as transmission towers, distribution poles, substations, transformers and wires, these lineworkers also educate the public on electric wire safety and adhere to rigorous safety standards to protect themselves and the communities CenterPoint serves.

Advancing workforce development to meet evolving regional needs

As part of the company’s commitment to hardening and strengthening the grid in southwestern Indiana, CenterPoint Energy is advancing workforce development through community relations programs and STEM-based educational opportunities. These efforts help cultivate the next generation of skilled electric lineworkers to support the evolving needs of customers and communities in southwestern Indiana.

USI Volleyball adds Leigh to coaching staff

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Volleyball Head Coach Jeffrey Aucoin announced the hiring of Mandy Leigh as an assistant coach for the Screaming Eagles.

Leigh, who will assist Aucoin in all aspects of the USI Volleyball program, comes to the Screaming Eagles from the University at Buffalo, where she amassed a school-record 4,643 career assists from 2021-24.

A two-time All-MAC honoree, Leigh was Buffalo’s starting setter for every match from 2023-24 and was the Bulls’ primary setter all four years. She finished her career with a program-record 10.05 assists per set and racked up 1,181 career digs, good for ninth all-time at Buffalo. She also was sixth in program history with a .318 career attacking percentage.

In 2023, Leigh ranked 22nd in the nation with 1,237 total assists and 10.395 assists per set.

Leigh brings two years of club coaching experience to the Screaming Eagles. She coached for the Cleveland Volleyball Company in 2024-25, helping her team to a second-place finish at Nationals in the USA Division. She also coached at the Niagara Frontier Volleyball Club in 2023-24.

“We’re excited to welcome Mandy to the USI Volleyball family,” Aucoin said. “She comes highly recommended by many respected colleagues in our sport, and her outstanding collegiate career speaks for itself.

“Mandy’s values, work ethic and character will complement our staff and make her a perfect fit for our program,” Aucoin continued. “We’re excited for the impact she’ll have both on and off the court.”

A native of Strongsville, Ohio, Leigh graduated from Buffalo in 2025 with a degree in health and human services.
