Todd Rokita leads fellow attorneys general defending girls’ and women’s sports against the woke Left’s ‘trans-sanity’

MAY 16, 2023

Attorney General Todd Rokita is demanding the U.S. Department of Education treat Hoosier girls and women with greater respect by stopping efforts to open female sports teams to biological males.

“These leftist bureaucrats are hellbent on rewriting sex to mean gender identity,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Codifying this trans-sanity would destroy 50 years of progress toward protecting the rights of girls and women under Title IX.”

This week, Attorney General Rokita led a 17-state letter to U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona protesting the Biden administration’s assault on women’s sports.

“I am grateful to these states, led by powerful attorneys general, for standing up to this woke-leftist trans-sanity,” Attorney General Rokita said.

After successfully obtaining a court injunction against earlier administration efforts to weaken Title IX through administrative “guidance,” the letter states, the attorneys general are prepared to continue their fight in defense of girls’ sports.

In 2022, the Indiana General Assembly passed legislation to protect female athletes from being forced to compete against biological males with natural athletic advantages. Attorney General Rokita strongly supported the measure, which remains in effect, and has defended it in court.

The White House would use the new federal rules to nullify such state laws, Attorney General Rokita said.

“The Left’s assault on women’s rights would undo the very protections for which Title IX was created and that we in Indiana have fought to maintain,” Attorney General Rokita said. “These elitist-driven proposals would harm regular Hoosiers just wanting fairness for girls and women.”

The letter is attached.

Senator Braun’s Statement on Report from Special Counsel John Durham

May 16, 2023

WASHINGTON – Senator Mike Braun released the following statement on the release of Special Counsel John Durham’s report.

“Special Counsel Durham’s report is thorough and damning: the Russia collusion investigation was a hoax from the get-go, was based on uncorroborated intel that was never corroborated, and should never have been opened. Media outlets and politicians that spread these baseless lies should issue retractions and apologies, and the politicizing of our justice system has to end.” – Senator Mike Braun

 Eastland Mall Incident (23-09154) SUMMARY

May 16, 2023

UPDATE 5/15/2023: One of the juveniles arrested in this case, Braylin C. J. Underwood (16), has been waved to Adult Court regarding this incident. Underwood was booked into the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center this morning for charges of: Child in Possession of a Firearm [L5], Criminal Gang Activity [L5], and Resisting Law Enforcement [AM]. At this time, the second juvenile who was arrested will not be waved to Adult Court. The Detective’s Office is still reviewing Eastland Mall security camera footage and pending arrests are possible. We do not have a time frame on when this will occur.

Yesterday at 6:53 p.m., two EPD officers were sitting in the Eastland Mall parking lot (800 N. Green River Rd.) finishing a report. Officers noticed people running out of the mall yelling that ‘shots were fired.’ Around the same time, Vanderburgh County Central Dispatch begin receiving calls for a large fight involving guns. Officers rushed in and located the scene. Two Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Deputies were working off-duty within Eastland Mall during the incident and also responded to the fight; deputies reported never hearing shots fired inside of Eastland Mall before, during or after the initial run came out.

Eastland Mall was put on lockdown and evacuated. Officers obtained descriptions of the suspects. Officers and all responding law enforcement personnel began searching and clearing individual stores looking for possible victims and suspects. During the search, an extended handgun magazine was located near the center of the mall.

Four males matching the description of the suspects were detained, two of which had fled outside. A handgun was also located outside. A total of five males were transported to EPD headquarters to be interviewed. During the investigation, it was determined no shots were actually fired within Eastland Mall. This incident had the potential to be much worse if it wasn’t for

the quick response of the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and the Evansville Police Department.

Two juvenile males have been arrested for charges of: Disorderly Conduct and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm, a level 5 felony. This investigation is still very active and Eastland Mall security footage is still being reviewed. Once the investigation is complete, future arrests may occur.

Eagles add McCord, Causwell for 2023-24

0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball announced the signing of 6-foot-10 center Nolan Causwell and 6-foot-5 guard Xavier McCord for the 2023-24 season. Causwell and McCord are the third and fourth players to sign with USI and Head Coach Stan Gouard this spring.

“USI is thrilled to welcome Nolan and Xavier to our basketball family,” said Gouard. “Both of are tremendous student athletes, who will fit in perfectly with our program and culture, and we are very excited to see their impact on our team.”

Causwell transfers to USI after spending the 2022-23 season with Tennessee Tech University. He played in 27 of Tennessee Tech’s 33 games, averaging 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. The incoming senior center scored a season-high 12 points twice (at Butler University; vs. Kentucky Christian University) and grabbed a season-best seven rebounds versus the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Prior to signing with Tennessee Tech, Causwell spent a pair of seasons with Laramie County Community College and one season at Gulf Coast State College. He averaged 7.2 points and 6.3 rebounds in 49 games for Laramie, posting a two-year best 10.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest in 2021-22.

Causwell posted a junior college-high 26 points versus Western Nebraska Community College and 17 rebounds versus McCook Community College.

“Nolan is a young man that we have a ton of history with, beginning with his Juco days,” said Gouard. “In addition to OVC experience and toughness, he has intangibles that will be vital to our team’s success.

“Nolan has a great basketball DNA with his dad (Duane Causwell) being a former NBA first round pick,” continued Gouard. “Nolan has grown up around basketball, which has given him a great feel for the game. We are thrilled that Nolan has chosen to finish his collegiate career as a Screaming Eagle.”

McCord joins USI after spending the last three seasons at Laramie. He averaged 17.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 81 games (78 starts) for the LCCC Golden Eagles.

During his three-seasons at Laramie, McCord posted a career-best 39 points as a redshirt freshman versus Central Wyoming College and 16 rebounds as a sophomore versus Western Nebraska Community College. He also had five games of 30-or-more points during his career at Laramie.

“Xavier is an explosive athlete with a lot of potential,” Gouard said. “He will fit in well with our offensive style and will be called upon to impact on our team immediately.

“Xavier’s athleticism will make him a fan favorite, because of his ability to attack the rim,” Gouard continued. “In addition to his offensive abilities, he is a tough defender and will be asked to make a difference on both ends of the court.”

The Eagles completed their first NCAA Division I season under Gouard by earning a trip to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and to the Collegiate Basketball Invitational (CBI). USI was 16-17 overall during the first Division I schedule, placing seventh in the OVC with a 9-9 conference mark.

Davis and his wife reside in Pike County with their five children.

Three-time National Champion pole vaulter to be inducted into NJCAA Hall of Fame

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – The Vincennes University Track and Field program will be celebrating not just one induction into the NJCAA Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame this weekend, but two with three-time NJCAA National Champion pole vaulter Matteo Capello (Turino, Italy) along with former VU Assistant Coach Tim Marsee.

“It is an honor and an incredible personal achievement to be included, alongside my coach, into the NJCAA Track and Field Hall of Fame,” Capello said. “To me, it represents the culmination of a fantastic experience which makes me very proud. I am also grateful to be able to leave a footprint that will last behind me. It marks the consolidation of an amazing chapter of my life.”

“Coach Marsee is a great man,” Capello added. “We connected right away and never had problems working together. He helped me achieve a long awaited personal best and made the years spent at Vincennes University special and unforgettable. He is for sure one of the people that helped me the most. The trust he put in me helped me to give it my all and even more. I consider him family.”

Capello joined the VU Track team before the 2020 Indoor season and quickly made a name for himself, setting a new facility record in his first collegiate competition at Indiana State after reaching a height of 5.21 meters, or 17 feet one inch.

Capello continued to dominate throughout his freshman indoor season, taking the top spot in every meet he competed in that season, including winning the Indoor Pole Vault National Championship and setting a new NJCAA National Meet record that season after clearing 5.30 meters or 17 feet-4.5 inches.

Capello’s freshman Outdoor season was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID pandemic.

When Capello returned to VU for the 2021 Indoor season, he immediately looked to make up for lost time, reaching 5.15 meters or higher in every competition that season.

Capello capped up his sophomore Indoor season by besting his own NJCAA National meet record and winning his second National Championship by clearing 5.40 meters or 17 feet, 8.5 inches.

Capello continued to improve as the 2021 Outdoor season began, setting a new personal best and an NJCAA Outdoor record that still stands after clearing 5.50 meters or 18 feet 0.5 inches at Indiana State.

Capello closed out his VU Track career by setting a new NJCAA Outdoor National meet record of 5.40 meters and claiming his third NJCAA Pole Vaulting National Championship.

Capello was named the National Athlete of the Year for the 2020 and 2021 Indoor seasons and the 2021 Outdoor season and was also an NJCAA Coaches Association Academic All-American.

Capello received USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors four times and was named USTFCCCA National Field Event Athlete of the Year three times.

“What I consider to be my greatest achievement is definitely winning National continuously in the two years I was at Vincennes,” Capello said. “I had some good heights from the beginning but it is easier said than done. You can mess it up, even when you have a good advantage on the other competitors, especially in a complex event such as the pole vault. But Coach Marsee was able to keep me on track. I appreciated winning the plates as Men’s Field Athlete of the Year because I remember seeing Coach Marsee visibly happy and proud of what we were doing.”

“The honest truth about why I chose Vincennes was they were the first school to offer me a good scholarship that would allow me to start my adventure,” Capello added. “I am glad that VU was the fastest school to offer me a spot, otherwise I wouldn’t be going into the Hall of Fame. As soon as I arrived, I found a great environment and had a bunch of friends after the first day. I knew that Coach Marsee had a long story of success in the pole vault and all the people I talked to about him while I was looking for some information had only good words and thoughts.”

“From day one, I remember seeing a big cardboard sign with the National titles the men’s basketball team has won through the years with the team picture next to them,” Capello said. “From that day, I promised myself that at the end of my stay at VU, I would have something like that for the pole vault. I may not have accomplished that mission, but being in the NJCAA Hall of Fame is definitely better. I can say now that we accomplished the mission one way or another.”

Capello would sign to continue his pole vaulting career at the University of Northern Iowa and competed for the Panthers during the 2022 Indoor season.

Capello is the third Vincennes University Track and Field athlete to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, following sprinter Jeff Phillips, who was inducted in 1991 and pole vaulter Natalia Bartnovskaya, who was inducted in 2019.

Capello is the fifth member of the Vincennes University Track and Field program to be inducted into the Track and Field Hall of Fame, along with Coach Marsee and Coach Bill Smith, who was inducted in 2021.

“I think back to the time spent at Vincennes with joy and melancholy,” Capello said. “I miss it dearly sometimes. I enjoyed the experience fully. Academically, I was surrounded by capable professors that enjoyed teaching and made sure we had everything we needed to succeed in the classes. I studied two years of interior design as my major, but I was also able to explore different subjects in this course of study.”

“By looking back, I can affirm that VU was a great environment,” Capello added. “I spent two years there and it gave me a lot of tranquility, created a good daily routine and put me in contact with great people that have helped me succeed in all fields. Important was the connection created with the team, coaches, professors and many other important figures. I couldn’t have asked for a better environment.”

Capello is set to be inducted alongside his former coach at VU Tim Marsee, as well as Coach Tony Dougherty of New Mexico Junior College and Coach Jane Vatchev of the College of DuPage in Illinois.
