Watland leads Otters past Boomers

0
Evansville, Ind. – The Evansville Otters closed the week out with a rain-delayed 8-1 win behind Justin Watland’s solid start and five doubles Sunday night at Bosse Field.

Watland was at his best Sunday night in a game delayed by two hours due to rain. The second year Otter twirled six excellent innings, allowing just one run. He struck out seven batters and limited the Boomers to just three hits for his best start of the season.

Leoni de La Cruz provided the fireworks for Evansville with a blazing seventh and eighth innings striking out all six batters he faced with five of the Boomers left looking. The six strikeouts were the most by an Otters’ reliever this season.

Offensively, Evansville generated a balanced attack with 12 hits by eight batters. Noah Myers led the charge with two extra-base hits.

He led off the 1st inning with a double and scored. Myers used a leadoff triple in the third inning, scoring on an Ethan Skender RBI knock.

The Otters tacked on another run in the first on a Kona Quiggle double.

The barrage of doubles continued with a Jacob Olson RBI two-bagger in the fourth and doubles by Dakota Phillips and Jeffrey Baez adding another run in the fifth.

Evansville blew the game open with three in the eighth. Three batters were hit and Quiggle delivered an RBI hit.

Schaumburg’s lone run came in the fifth.

Myers led the way with three total runs while Baez and Quiggle both totaled two-RBI days. Myers totaled four extra base-hits in his stellar weekend.

The Otters finish the week 3-3 for the third consecutive week.

Evansville hits the road on Tuesday for a quick three game trip to Chicagoland to take on the Windy City ThunderBolts. First pitch for all three games are slated for 6:35 PM CT.

UE School of Education receives approval to add an Elementary Transition to the Teaching program

EVANSVILLE, IND. (06/12/2023)

The University of Evansville’s School of Education acknowledges the increased demand for qualified teachers. Recently, the School of Education obtained approval from the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) to introduce an Elementary Transition to Teaching (T2T) program.

The elementary and secondary T2T programs target individuals with undergraduate degrees who are seeking their teaching license in Indiana. By offering both secondary and elementary programs, UE aims to create a strong pool of educators to fill teaching vacancies at local, state, and national levels.

UE’s Elementary (grades K-6) Program includes 24 credit hours and can typically be completed within one calendar year. Similarly, the Secondary (grades 5-12) program requires 18 credit hours and can also be completed in just one calendar year. Students enrolled in these programs meet the coursework requirements for an initial Indiana educator license. Both programs include a minimum of 600 hours of clinical experience in area classrooms. Those who complete the programs build the set of competencies needed to be successful teachers. It is possible for students to be hired by local school corporations and work through the program as hired teachers within a school corporation. This is a good option for those who are highly motivated to begin their career.

“The expansion of UE’s Transition to Teaching Program reflects the recognition of the invaluable benefits it brings to both aspiring educators and the education system as a whole,” said Dr. Alison Jones, Co-Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Education. “This initiative not only opens doors of opportunity for individuals seeking a fulfilling career in teaching but also supports Indiana K-12 schools in filling teaching vacancies.”

For additional information about the Transition to Teaching program, please contact Laura Watkins, Transition to Teaching Coordinator, at lw261@evansville.edu or click here.

FOOTNIE: The University of Evansville is a private, comprehensive university located in the southwestern region of Indiana. Established in 1854, UE is recognized across the globe for its rich tradition of innovative, academic excellence and vibrant campus community of changemakers.

Fostering Safe Communities

Fostering Safe Communities

 by State Senator Vaneta Becker

June 12, 2023

As the state’s leading law-enforcement agency, the Indiana State Police (ISP) offers assistance to nearly every law enforcement agency across the state. Yet, data shows our state troopers are among the lowest paid law enforcement officers in Indiana. That’s why I supported more than $95 million to substantially increase pay for ISP.

The General Assembly also allocated $10 million for the Regional Mental Health Facility Grants, which will work in tandem with a new law that will allow courts and law enforcement officers to refer arrestees to mental health services.

The new state budget also provides $60 million to programming to help improve outcomes in our juvenile justice programs.

As your state senator, I will continue to support law enforcement and improvements to our justice system, which foster safe communities.

Vanderburgh County Jail Inmates Graduate From IN2WORK Culinary Program

0

Five Vanderburgh County Jail inmates recently graduated from Aramark’s IN2WORK Culinary program.

On Thursday, June 08, 2023, a ceremony was held with the participating inmates, their families, and representatives from Aramark and the Sheriff’s Office. The participants prepared a meal for their families and spoke about their plans for life post-incarceration.

The IN2WORK program establishes a path to success for offenders by providing training and resources to empower individuals to attain future employment in the food industry.

Sheriff Noah Robinson explained, “Recidivism reduction programs like this provide individuals with a clear opportunity to break the cycle of criminal behavior.” Sheriff Robinson continued, “The feeling of achievement that comes from completing the course may just be the catalyst needed for an inmate to take a better path upon release.”

The Sheriff’s Office has had a longstanding partnership with Aramark Corporation, which has provided food service to the Jail since the year 1977.

Later this year the Sheriff’s Office will unveil new recidivism reduction programs.

Trailblazer Devawn White to play at Saint Mary’s University in Canada

0

VINCENNES, Ind. – Vincennes University men’s basketball player Devawn White (Montreal, Quebec) announced this week that he plans to play next season at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The reason why I decided to attend Saint Mary’s University is because it is a welcoming place that would allow me to play the game I love and get an amazing education which will allow me to go into the law field,” White said.

White averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds per game over his two seasons with the Blue and Gold.

White averaged 3.1 points and 3.7 rebounds for the Blazers as a freshman, starting in eight games for VU, scoring in double figures twice, including a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double against Parkland.

White returned to VU this past season and was a key member of the Blazers coming off the bench and helped VU return to the NJCAA National Tournament for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

White helped Vincennes finish last season with a record of 30-6, reaching the NJCAA National Quarterfinals.

White joins Tasos Cook (Columbus, Ohio) (Campbell), Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind.) (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) and Caleb Johnson (N. Preston, Nova Scotia) (Jacksonville State) as members of last year’s VU team to announce where they will be playing next season.

White more than excelled as a student-athlete at Vincennes University, balancing playing for a nationally ranked men’s basketball team, while also being a Pre-Law major at VU.

White earned Third Team Academic All-American honors as a freshman, after having a minimum GPA of 3.60 for the entire school year.

“My favorite memories at Vincennes University was being able to go to the National Tournament with a group of guys who have worked so hard and can call my brothers for life,” White added. “The tournament is something special that everybody who plays at VU should experience one time in their life.”

“It means a lot to have a big turnaround this season compared to my freshman season,” White said. “Because our team was able to learn how to bond together and find success to bring back the VU family legacy.”

“Vincennes University has prepared me athletically to compete with college-level players,” White added. “Academically, Vincennes has prepared me to continue my schooling at a high caliber level. They have also taught me how to prioritize my schoolwork while maintaining focus on my athletic career.”

“Academically, Vincennes has allowed me to elevate my vocabulary, as well as my writing skills,” White said. “Furthermore, they have taught me how to be independent. While attending VU, I was given the opportunity to grow on my own as a young man, with the support of my teachers, coaches, teammates and staff.”

White will be joining a Saint Mary’s Huskies squad that finished last season with an 8-12 record under Head Coach Jonah Taussig.

Saint Mary’s University plays in the U SPORTS league of Canadian College Athletics and is a member of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Conference.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department would like to congratulate Devawn White and wishes him good luck next season at Saint Mary’s University.
