Braun, Sinema introduce legislation to improve the health and welfare of federal working dogs

0

WASHINGTON—Today, Senator Mike Braun and Senator Kyrsten Sinema introduced the Working Dog Health and Welfare Act of 2023 to increase the safe and humane treatment of federal working dogs.

“Working dogs” are used for the detection of explosives, narcotics, and missing persons, as well as serving in patrol and navigation capacities.

This legislation would include programs that detect abuse and neglect of these animals, as well as ensuring emergency medical care, exercise, food and water, rest and off-duty time, and medical needs after retirement.

“Federal working dogs, who work diligently alongside their human companions, risk their lives daily to ensure the safety of Americans. As both a leader in the Senate for animal welfare and a dog owner, I am proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation to ensure that these animals are protected both during and after the time they serve.”—Senator Braun

“Our commonsense legislation protects Arizona working dogs from inhumane treatment – ensuring they are strong and healthy enough to keep Arizonans safe and secure.”—Senator Sinema

“The Working Dog Health and Welfare Act of 2023 is a strong step towards making the country a kinder place for animals. Working dogs within our government agencies operate alongside human partners to perform invaluable services—including helping to sniff out threats, sense dangerous substances, and rescue those in peril. We rely on these amazing animals for help, and now it is time we treat them with the respect they deserve. This bill will help to ensure that government agencies implement GAO recommendations that promote the health and welfare of working dogs.”— American Humane Society, President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert

“The American Kennel Club applauds Senator Braun’s leadership in introducing the Working Dog Health and Welfare Act of 2023 to implement recommendations for protections and standards of care for U.S. Government working dogs outlined in the Government Accountability Office report, ‘Working Dogs: Federal Agencies Need to Better Address Health and Welfare’. Government working dogs do extraordinary work every day in protecting Americans at home and abroad. These dogs deserve our efforts to provide them quality care and the protections too.”— American Kennel Club

BACKGROUND:

  • There are nearly 5,500 working dogs served in the federal government within 64 programs at eight departments and three independent agencies. Officials from these programs identified that the most common job for federal working dogs is the detection of explosives, narcotics, and missing persons. Federal working dogs also serve in patrol, navigation, and other specialty capacities.
  • In October 2022, the Government Accountability office cited 18 issues pertaining to the treatment of federal working dogs including lack of programs that detect abuse and the mistreatment of these animals in a report entitled “Working Dogs: Federal Agencies Need to Better Address Health and Welfare.” In addition, there is a lack of regulation pertaining to emergency medical care, exercise, food and water, rest and off-duty time which are critical to the well-being of federal working dogs.
  • The Working Dog Health and Welfare Act would ensure that federal agencies implement GAO’s working dog recommendations for existing working dog programs within 180 days of enactment. It would also require new working dog programs to proactively implement GAO’s recommendations. Finally, the bill requires agencies to submit a report to Congress on the steps taken to implement GAO’s recommendations.

Evansville, Ind. – Zach Smith worked seven innings of one-run ball as the Evansville Otters cruised past the Empire State Greys 6-1 Friday night at Bosse Field.

Smith worked four in-order innings and struck out six batters. He allowed just one run and three hits in his seven innings on the mound to earn his fifth win and seventh quality start of the season.

Evansville used two homers to propel their offense.

Noah Myers led off the Otters’ bats with a solo home run to right in the first inning for his 10th homer of the year.

Empire State tied the game on a walk and single in the top of the fourth.

Jeffrey Baez responded with a 412 foot solo home run down the left field line to leadoff the fourth, good for his team-leading 14th home run of the season.

The Otters plated three more runs in the seventh inning. Dakota Phillips hit a two-RBI double and Ethan Skender followed with an RBI single.

Myers extended his hit streak to 12 games. Baez finished the day with three hits.

Jon Beymer pitched the final two innings for the Otters with two strikeouts.

Evansville pitching has allowed just six total hits over the last two games pitched. The Otters’ offense has smashed 15 home runs in the seven games since returning from the All-Star Break.

The Otters face the Greys in the middle game of the series Saturday evening as part of HOT96 FM and YMCA’s Wizards Night.

Partnership With COCA COLA And Evansville Will Continue Rain Barrel Program

0

The City of Evansville’s Storm Water Management Department is proud to announce its continued partnership with the Coca-Cola Company for its Rain Barrel Program. The program, which aims to promote water conservation, has been a tremendous success in raising awareness about the importance of preserving water resources.

As part of this partnership, Coca-Cola will donate 55-gallon plastic drums, which will be converted into rain barrels. These rain barrels provide an eco-friendly solution for collecting rainwater, which can be used for various purposes, such as watering plants, gardens, and lawns while reducing water consumption.

Individuals interested in obtaining rain barrels for personal use are invited to participate in the pickup event, which will take place Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. The event will take place at the Back 40 Parking Lot, located behind the Civic Center Complex.

Please note that both pickup events operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and no reservations are accepted. We encourage participants to arrive early to secure their rain barrels.

For additional information about the Rain Barrel Program, please contact Karan Barnhill, Storm Water Coordinator at the City Engineer’s Office, Civic Center Complex, by calling 812-436-4977 or via email atkbarnhill@evansville.in.gov.

Senator Braun’s amendment to protect Second Amendment from “national emergency declaration” gun control

0
braun

WASHINGTON – Today, Senator Mike Braun offered an amendment to the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act that would prevent President Biden and the Department of Health and Human Services from declaring gun violence a public health emergency for the purpose of instituting gun control measures and infringing on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

“National and local politicians across the country are always trying to restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. We need to set into law that no one can declare a national health emergency to seize the power to restrict our Second Amendment rights with the stroke of a pen. I will always stand up for Hoosiers’ rights to protect themselves and their families.” – Senator Mike Braun

President Biden and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra, and Senator Alex Padilla have called for gun violence public health emergencies.

Senator Braun’s amendment would protect Americans’ right to bear arms from executive branch infringement by affirming that the HHS Secretary does not have the authority to institute gun control by declaring gun violence a public health emergency.

Senator Braun’s remarks during the markup meeting of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee:

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans saw Big Government flourish and many of our constitutional rights be diminished.

More and more, big government wants to turn everything into a national emergency.

Recently, the Secretary of Health and Human Services advocated for gun violence to be declared a public health emergency to grant HHS power to restrict Americans’ right to keep and bear arms.

The Department of Health and Human Services was never intended to implement gun control of any kind.

My amendment would simply prohibit HHS from declaring a public health emergency to implement gun control.

I urge my colleagues to vote yes on my amendment.
