On Thursday, February 02, 2023 at 6:10 PM, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of 11650 Sawmill Drive for a medical assist. Upon arrival, the Scott Township Fire Department located a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle, Daniel Brian Smith (60 yo), stated to deputies that he had been in a verbal confrontation with his sister, Faith Raelynn Georges (62 yo), just a few minutes before he stuck her with the vehicle. He said the confrontation led outside the residence, where he got into the vehicle to leave. Mr. Smith said he could hear Faith screaming and yelling at him when he backed out of the driveway of the residence. He said he left, not realizing Faith was behind the vehicle. Mr. Smith said he returned to the residence a few seconds later to find his sister in the roadway. Mr. Smith said he then went to the neighbor’s house and asked them to call 911 for his sister.
Ms. Georges was transported to Deaconess Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Mr. Smith was also transported to a local hospital for a chemical test in accordance with Indiana law regarding fatal crashes.
Mr. Smith agreed to speak by detectives at the hospital and made statements indicating that he had operated his vehicle in a reckless manner during the crash. Mr. Smith is preliminarily being charged with reckless homicide and driving while suspended, causing death. Toxicology results are pending at this time and additional charges may follow.
Mr. Smith is currently admitted to the hospital for a pre-existing medical condition not related to the crash. He is in the custody of deputies, but his arrest is still pending until such time he is released from the hospital and can be transported and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.
