Less than a month before the 1956 presidential election, Vice-President Richard M. Nixon visited Evansville to boost support for President Dwight Eisenhower, who was trailing his Democratic opponent, Adlai Stevenson, in the polls. After a press conference at the airport, Nixon’s motorcade headed to Evansville College, where the Second Lady, Pat Nixon, accepted a volume of poetry from E. A. Richardson (right), Indiana’s Poet Laureate and an Evansville resident. The Vice-President then proceeded to the Coliseum, where he addressed an audience of 5,000 before leaving Evansville.
