On Tuesday, December 01, 2015 Sheriff Dave Wedding announced the installation of a new inmate communications system at the Vanderburgh County Confinement Center. This new service is provided by Telmate, a leader in corrections technology.

The new communications system, which is part of the Telmate Smart Jail Solution, utilizes video conferencing and hand held tablets to provide inmates with new ways to connect with friends and family. The new system enhances the security of the facility while giving inmates more options and time to communicate with loved ones. Friends and family of inmates now have the option of remote visitation from their home by using a standard personal computer.

The new inmate tablets will serve as wireless access points to the Telmate suite of inmate software services. Features include: messaging, photo sharing, approved entertainment, ebooks, a law library, and much more. By utilizing this innovative technology inmates are able to connect with the outside world in a controlled manner, access educational and recreational content, occupy their time and manage their account.

This new technology will enhance facility security and control while increasing operational efficiencies. The system will reduce physical mail, decrease contraband issues and serve as an effective inmate behavior modification tool. All Telmate software is inked to Telmate Verified, an automated identity verification system that authenticates every system user. The ultra-secure tablets feature corrections-grade, locked-down devices, hotspots, and security servers. Jail staff have 24 hour access and control of the video, phone and tablet services. The system also features Telmate Investigator, a suite of tools that turn collected data into actionable, crime-solving intelligence.

“No other technology vendor even approaches this level of advanced tablet technology in a correctional environment,” said Sheriff Wedding. “Telmate tablets provide us with a valuable tool to encourage proper inmate behavior, which results in fewer disciplinary incidents. The ability to connect with loved ones while keeping up with evolving technology only increases the likelihood that inmates will be able to successfully re-enter society.”
