Mayor Winnecke Holds Groundbreaking For Sunset Skatepark

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and other stakeholders broke ground at the Sunset Skatepark location Monday morning. Deig Bros. Construction will continue ground work in the coming weeks.

Designed closely with local skateboard and inline skating communities, the 23,000-square-foot facility will serve as the largest skate park in our region.

“Located between Mickey’s Kingdom and the new Sunrise Pump Station, Sunset Skatepark will further elevate the quality of place along our Riverfront,” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. “Skateboarders, inline skaters, riders: This will be a park for all to enjoy.”

Developed by Hunger Skateparks, conceptual designs include a manual pad in the center of the rink, an Amoeba Bowl, a bike zone, and ledges that include out and ride-on options.

Designers added plans for rain gardens to mitigate stormwater runoff. The team also ramped up appearances by pulling creative inspiration from the historic Mississippian culture that once thrived during 1000-1450 A.D. a few miles from the park’s location.

The anticipated completion date for the park is late summer 2023.

    1. It will be a great facility. Best thing, it was built in the proper location, unlike the Park Commissioners choice for a massive 24 court Pickleball project in tranquil Wesselman Park. That project must be relocated. Hundreds upon hundreds agree. The City Council is now aware of what is planned and hopefully they will protect our great park.
