UPDATE: Long Island fingered on National Broadcast for Having Highest Electrical Rates in America:

UPDATE: Vectren sources have provided the CCO with some additional fees that actually bring the Long Island Power Authority bills to about $187 per month that does exceed the $155 that local supplier Vectren bills for 1,000 kWh.

Previous Article:

After hearing a national news show proclaim over the weekend that Long Island has the “highest” electricity rates in the country we decided to take the anchorperson to the test.

After reviewing the published residential electric rates and service charges that Long Island Power charges its customers the City County Observer is no longer feeling sorry for the Long Islanders. A typical residence that uses 1,000 kWh per month in Long Island pays $94.60 for their power.

In Evansville, IN the cost for the same 1,000 kWh is $155.10 which is a full 64% higher than our countrymen on Long Island. To make matters worse City-Data reports that the median household income in Evansville is $34,567 while on Long Island it is $68,295 or nearly double what it is in Evansville.

The median household in Evansville based on these figures will work 9 hours per month to cover their Vectren bill while the median household on Long Island will only have to work for 2 hours and 45 minutes per month to cover electricity expenses. This translates into a family from Evansville having to work 225% longer to pay for electricity than people on the supposedly most expensive electricity in the country of Long Island.

  1. Don’t look for Vectren to host a CCO & friends open bar party on their HQ top floor river view deck. Competition is bad in a free market system. Think of the chaos caused if the Henderson utility could sell cheaper electricity in Evansville.

    • Ooooh baby,my same thoughts.

I’m thinking this is a “dog that can hunt” story.

      Maybe a Drudge Report mention?

  2. If I ran a Henderson Realty firm, I would be advertising like mad the advantages of living over the “money saving” bridge and being out of the death grip of the parasite we fondly refer to as Vectren.

  3. Just think,

If all the Evansville residents had all that electricity $ back…

… maybe the FDP customers could afford their own houses/improvements?

… maybe they could afford bank fees and didn’t need Bank on Evansville?

… maybe even Durham would have had enough cash to buy her own New Kids on the Block tickets?

… maybe running that Roberts water pump, wouldn’t have been a big deal at all?

… maybe the McCurdy wouldn’t have needed an overhaul?

… maybe Whirlpool would still be here?

  4. Just look at the juxtaposition of stories: Lexington, KY pays far more for talented managers for their City; Vectren (a regulated utility) pays their managers millions of dollars. The answer, of course, is to make electric and gas a City Utility, and pay good managers at the level of Lexington ($ 100K plus). The line for these “City jobs” will be highly competitive, and we’ll get good people in those seats who earn every penny. Needs to be a push to get rid of Vectren altogether. If Henderson Municipal Power & Light can thrive at a fraction of the cost of Vectren, I like the sound of Evansville Municipal Power & Light (EMPL will give us AMPLE savings !).

    • The way this city is run, the “city job” would be appointed to somebodies (incompetent) relative. We gotta smoke out the good ol’ boys before we can make any progress in this city.

  5. Unless the Politicians have sold off our own Constitution, I thought that monopolies were illegal in this country. Am I missing something here???

  6. Next time you get your bill, look at what they charge for gas. Then look to see what gas is selling for and figure it out. You will be P— Off. They also make money off of transportation charges. At one time they would not buy local gas from wells in the area. Have one someone investigate that. I will we will get a decrease when we pay off the money they spent. For the days of Sigeco. I guess you can always go to that other electric company.

The American Consumer Satisfaction Index gave LIPA the lowest customer satisfaction rating among municipal-owned utilities in the nation, underscoring an overall dissatisfaction with the power utility

Inspector General Biben said, “Our office has the tools and resources necessary to conduct a swift and thorough audit of the Long Island Power Authority’s rate tactics, and I thank Governor Cuomo for the opportunity to verify and assess rate increases that impact Long Island ratepayers.”

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. and Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney have been vocal advocates on behalf of ratepayers on Long Island. Senator Fuschillo recently led a hearing on LIPA oversight and Assemblyman Sweeney has put forth legislation seeking oversight of the utility.

Senator Fuschillo said, “I applaud Governor Cuomo for ordering a thorough audit of LIPA by the Inspector General. This is a critically important step in the right direction towards making LIPA more transparent and accountable to its 1.1 million ratepayers, who are sick and tired of paying some of the highest utility costs in the nation.”

Assemblyman Sweeney said, “I am delighted that Governor Cuomo has begun the process of providing desperately needed public oversight of the Long Island Power Authority. A number of unfortunate and questionable decisions have caused the authority to lose public confidence. It is only through greater transparency and professional oversight that this trust can be restored. Long Islanders pay among the highest electric rates in the United States. They deserve no less than to receive the best possible management of their utility.”

If our rates are that much higher than the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), then perhaps it is past time for our own local state legislators and the governor to call for an assessment of the situation!

  8. vectren sucks!!! so does this county we are in a recession and they approved vectrens rate hike!!! maybe one day we will get a new company in here to compete with vectren offering lower rates then we can tell them to kiss our butts!!!

  9. Why don’t you read the Indiana Administrative Code 4-1-1 concerning electric utilities? You could probably find several sections under the code that Vectren has violated
