LETTER TO THE CCO EDITOR: FRUSTRATED PARENT VOICE CONCERNS ABOUT THE DETERIORATION OF “KIDS KINGDOM”
WRITTEN BY TRICIA GERTEISEN
OCTOBER 23, 2023
Living in a city as large as ours, how do we not have a decent public playground for our children?
Mickey’s Kingdom is only 5 years old this month… but it was disheartening to discover yesterday when I stopped by with my younger two kiddos, the shape countless pieces of equipment were in and the overall complete lack of maintenance, which has led to the current sad state the park is in now and how it could have even happened in such a short amount of time…
As a #MamaOf5 in this community, it angers me… It also raises an extremely valid question 🤔
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, I vividly recall the day YOU cut the ribbon and the words YOU spoke at a said ceremony… yet, I sit here today and can’t help but wonder, I get it, it was a nice photo-op but the reality is, it feels like yet another broken promise 🤷ðŸ½â€â™€ï¸
Have you ever been back to the park?
This begs an even bigger, more serious question… why should I or any other parent in this community support Natalie Rascher – who proudly touts to give us 4 more years of “Winnecke’s Evansville”?!?
I don’t know about anyone else, but this gal is not interested…
I want someone interested in more than making appearances… I want someone interested in making actual changes.
FOOTNOTE: Â THE CITY-COUNTY OBSERVER POSTED THIS LETTER WITHOUT BIAS, OPINION OR EDITING.
You should attend a Board of Park Commissioners meeting (or send someone) to speak to this issue (for the record). They meet the first and third Wednesday at nopon room 3-1 Civic Center. August 2022 I stood for the hundreds of people on social media who objected to the administrations plans to remove hundreds of tree’s in Wesselman Park for “Pickleball parking and a new road”. The pushback led them to revise that plan and worked around the tree’s (for now). I’ll feel more sure after they (Mayor Winnecke and Deputy Mayor/Parks Director Steve Schaefer) have left office. The Board of Park Commissioners approved the original plan (cutting tree’s) without public input. Real slimy stuff. I hope the mew mayor replaces each of them Jan 1. 2024. In the following months the lack of EVV park maintenance by the Winnecke/Schaefer administration was exposed. Missy Mosby was quite vocal in addressing the problem, She deserves another term.
Natalie is riding the coat tails of Winnecke and the control of our city will be worse with him in a private position with EREP. Natalie doesn’t even speak in her commercials. Winnecke has done everything for her. She is truly a PUPPET for him.
Daugherty is the only one tackling the tough questions and has brought most of the issues to light. He has my vote and I voted for Winnecke 3 times. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 3 times and you lose my vote.
It’s just not limited to Mickey’s Kingdom, that is the condition of most of the parks in the city. Daugherty gets my vote because he has vowed to fix the parks.
Thanks for sharing your frustration. What a complete and total slap in the face to the many corporate and individual donors who gave to this project, so that no local government funds would be used. Also a slap in the face to the over 2000 volunteers (myself included) who worked many hours to make this happen. Another example of not taking care of what we have while simply getting a bond to go further in debt to build new things. The current administration, has been a failure. Left the city near financial collapse as they prepare to move on. Once again no accountability for this misconduct.
The question keeps coming up about who the new mayor will appoint as fire chief or police chief. The question we should be asking is who the new mayor will appoint as controller. The current controller, Russ Lloyd needs to be replaced. One term as mayor, 12 years as controller. The citizens have had enough.
