IS IT TRUE David Coker authored an excellent article in the CP on the industrial history of the City of Evansville?…his words about feeling pride when watching the “Price is Right” game show and hearing about Evansville being the place that boat trailers were made triggered similar memories in this author?…back in the day Evansville really did have a brand and that brand was “a place where things are made”?…from the LST, to Chrysler, to Bucyrus Erie, to Servel, to Faultless, to Whirlpool, Evansville always was a place for heavy industry to make products to sell to consumer markets?…that Evansville is gone much through the evolution of globalization but also by the stodgy failure to adapt to the world as it changed?…Evansville is of course not alone among the cities of industrial America to be bypassed by the winds of change but it has been bypassed none the less?…times were very different when one could trade a high school diploma for a union card and a good paying factory job?…as Bruce Springsteen sang “those jobs are gone and they ain’t coming back” so it is time for Evansville to get to the business of creating an atmosphere where job creation will occur naturally (to borrow a line from the 2011 Winnecke campaign)?

IS IT TRUE there is an order in which an entity with limited resources can make such an atmosphere possible?…prioritizing fun and games to the top is simply not in the accomplishment playbook?…for an atmosphere of achievement to take root first a place has to be desirable to creators of good jobs?…that includes a working sewer system without an EPA sword of Damocles hanging over the citizens wallets, walk friendly sidewalks, a good water system, safe neighborhoods, and excellent schools?…all of these are “must haves” to attract or even retain the kind of people who are vital to a vital and sustainable economy?…after the “must haves” are in place things like pristine public parks and bike friendly transportation corridors can be brought online?…only after these things are in place should fun and games projects on the public dole be considered?…Evansville of course has this backwards and thus it has a chronic identity problem?…when the “must haves” are in place an identity will start to emerge as it did back in the day?…until then the fun and games dole projects are not only bankrupting us, they are preventing a natural identity from happening?…we have to stop putting lipstick on a pig to start a real transformation process?

IS IT TRUE that other editorial writers that contribute to the literary world of Evansville, Indiana are awakening to the idea that income must exceed spending to manage a city responsibly?…they even seem to have figured out how to maintain a household on a known income stream?…the missing piece in scaling such a thing to a tax revenue dependent entity like the City of Evansville is that knowing what the revenue is going to be with the exactness of a weekly paycheck is impossible?…Mayor Winnecke has presented a best case revenue plan to develop a budget that spends every dime?…the bulk of the City Council is trying to force a worst case revenue budget and craft the spending to that?…the only logical choice is to go with the lowest revenue estimate to craft a budget and increase spending (or debt reduction) later If things work out for the best on the revenue side?…the old political trick of overestimating revenues and borrowing he difference is no way to run a government?

IS IT TRUE that CCO columnist and former GAGE president Joe Wallace has been named as one of three finalists for the Inland Empire Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award for 2014 for his role as Chief Innovation Officer of the Coachella Valley Innovation Hub?…the Inland Empire is a region of Southern CA that is roughly the equivalent of a Midwestern state in population and economic activity?…the CViHub in only three years has attracted 30 start-up companies that have a collective valuation of over $100 Million and has been projected to have a $12.5 Billion economic impact over the next 20 years by Dr. John Husing?…those who are interested can read about the awards at www.inlandspiritawards.com?

  1. I remember that older Evansville well. There was a “can-do” atmosphere here, personified at the Aces games, where line workers and plant managers cheered on the home team while wearing their red shirts. Notably absent was the elitist attitudes that is bred by skyboxes. Everybody was “in it together.”
Congratulations on your hard-earned success Joe. Is Debbie (Mrs. Silence Dogood) Dewey being considered for a similar award in this part of the country?

    • I too grew up in the Evansville of old, but that was then, this is now. Time marches on. The 21st Century has arrived,
but Evansville’s Elitist Politicos are still living in the Past,–to the determent of Evansville’s Future. They feel “safer” there I suppose. I would speculate if you moved their bed , they would sleep on the floor where it used to be.

        • Yes. Their smugness reeks like Limburger. I venture most of the Readers of the CCO can “smell” these creeps, the only exceptions being their boot licking minions.

      • Your assessment is spot-on, Crash. I think the bloodlines are weakening with each generation, so playing in a corrupt political machine is a good alternative for many in the “in-crowd.”
Manufacturing is probably not the big part of Evansville’s future, but it can still play a role. We do have good news coming out of the new Evansville factory district, which is known by its proper name, “Gibson County”.
Our other big hope for the new Evansville is the healthcare industry, but the old liners kicked that in the teeth by succeeding in getting the IU Med School placed in old Evansville, away from the “Medical Mile”. It would have been better to place it in the medical care district, but dirty politics won out.
The truth is that being Mayor of Evansville won’t amount to much within the next decade or so unless the “leaders” wake up soon, or the voters kick them out and get new ones. The middle class is deserting the worn out infrastructure for greener pastures in the former suburbs, that are now close to jobs, shopping, and betters schools.

        • “The middle class is deserting the worn out infrastructure for greener pastures in the former suburbs, that are now close to jobs, shopping, and betters schools.”

That, is social economic environmental migration.

Every point on the earth in migration today has one of the three known drivers of the journey as an tipping point to those painfully migrating for a more valued and sustainable life path balance.

Counting the affects and causes daily is simply using sustainable analytics to find working solutions.
Its what we’ve endeavored to achieve through our global groups consortium. Sure upsets some peoples bents, however nothing in concern of that obnoxiousness will change one recorded fact.

          The solutions will.

          • Did you poopy your diaper, V ?

Go tell mommy you poopied your diaper so she can change it and give you a sippy cup of juice.

Then you can tell her how you posted stupid, clunky sentence phrases on the internet by mis-applying physics terms inappropriately to words when trolling on the CCO website. Tell her you even threw in some latin phrases to try to make yourself sound sophisticated, but FAILED.

Hmm, I wonder if a CCO troll would become discontent with just posting long, meaningless paragraphs on the CCO website, and instead try to hack it with a virus ?

          • V We moved out of the hot dirty bright city for the cooler, cleaner and darker county years ago.

It’s a better life style living in the country side than in the inner city. Which is why most people try to move out of the city if they can afford to.

The development of the internal combustion engine and the automobile resulted in people being free to travel further and faster and IMHO let people with means move away to the more open areas.

Human expansion has been going on since the first monkeys/apes starting to stand upright and use their opposable thumbs to make tools and fire.

          • As City revenue and population decline, I think Mayor’s salary should also decline. Does someone presiding over the death of an urban area really need a “Chief of Staff” to help with the Last Rites?

          • @Moveedon Its what people do, that’s the difference between entropic migration and entopic projections, and why social economic politics sometimes fails by its environment to see the huge tempered shark hooks in some of the statements posted here.
From your previous comments we’ve seen that your site is more versed due the normally universal “entropic based values” seeking real solutions steadily more than the entopic value ole #1 up sports there. That’s just determined to be a normally vaporous defilade by assignment, to adjust the favor of any comments seen as an opposition in views or opinions, per the topic of discussion.

            Defilade[edit]
A unit or position is “in defilade” if it uses natural or artificial obstacles to shield or conceal

      • Early voting if counted has always meant MORE votes and More votes always helps the Democrats.

The GOP would love to see it rain and snow on the signal election day as it helps the minority win a few more seats.

Give me a bright sunny clear day for voting any time. Freedom should be more treasured that having a single day and a few hours to cast our votes for democracy in the USA.

We should have weeks to cast our votes. Early voting gives us more time to actually do our duty as citizens of the USA. That’s a good thing my friends.

  2. There was a book published -I think by by U of E- titled “Evansville, How A City Founded to Make Money Succeeded” or similar.
I’m told it is hard to find so if you run across one (Blue as I remember it) cleaning out mom & dad’s things give it a read. You won’t be disappointed.

  3. Lets go back to yesterdays IIT – The Editor sited a hack on his website CCO – he did not state it was local or politicized. Here is a summary of those 58 responses yesterday:

Moveon ( Really ? ) 10 replies saying the hack should cause us to get out our guns, call the FBI, call the Feds, and then he also blamed the hack on the pricing at the Fall Festival – givemeabreak

CCO #1 6 replies Hack the cause of politicians, yet he did state he didn’t think guns were the answer

JIG 1 reply stating that the problem was probably poor coding – Makes sense to me

V – 9 responses, all off subject and extremely difficult to understand, as normal

    Animal – 1 response – Call the FBI ( Really ? )

    Bandana – 1 response – Call the FBI ( Really ? )

Crash LaRue – 5 responses – Hack caused by Evansville politicians, and Annie get your guns

Joe Biden – 2 responses – Call the state and federal government about the hack

LKB – 8 responses – Hack due to light the CCO is casting on locals – OH and she loves Obama and his giveaways

Press and key – 1 response – hack due to election time culprit

A couple of other responses unrelated or just in support of other comments.

So from the coding of the site, a problem with the CCO’s server, a problem with a program upgrade, or the slight chance of a hacking we are going to call the FBI, the State, the Feds, get out our guns. Where in all of this is there a threat to us as individuals ? The local yocals do not care what goes on here. And we question shootings in Evansville when 15 responses are from those saying to get out your guns. Please notice there are about 15 actual individuals responding to yesterdays hack and such.

givemeabreak – why am I here ? For the humor in your trivial comments. Mr Editor, I commend you for not placing any blame on the results to your website, whatever the cause may have been. Oh and you want individuals to identify themselves ?!!! Right 🙂 Then you will have someone to aim at…

    • lolllllllll……right on right on…….one more BUSH did it……lollllll agree breakman what a bunch of morons……..

    • Comments concerning hacking or whatever took place are clearly conjecture, and were not stated as known facts by any of the posters.

In regard to “LKB – 8 responses – Hack due to light the CCO is casting on locals – OH and she loves Obama and his giveaways”, I DO love POTUS, but made no mention of any social programs. He has been hamstrung by the tealiban, so little has been accomplished in that area. There’s nothing like a “recap” with spin from an angry rightie.

      • LKB – Hey, no anger here. This site is viewed by those who need a break from the hard work that they do, or as in your case, someone who wants to complain about the city, its politicians, spending habits, and such. I smile as I read and respond to your trivial backwash 🙂

As I smile while reading most of what’s here, what I do not smile about is those who feel that there is an action requiring the securing of arms.

You may now go back to watching your latest rerun of sex and the city 🙂

        • oh you are so wrong. I and everyone else in here can see the anger in your post. The mere fact that you took the time to do such a skewed post shows your anger even if you can’t see it. It’s there in boat loads.

I guess your nerves are a little frayed.

Calm down and let the CCO take it from here!

The CCO has supported the CORE group which defeated your team by a three to one margin for fourth or fifth time now.

As for your gun remark I think everyone should pack a gun. That’s been my thoughts long before the hack which removed data from the CCO site. The probability of the site crashing and removing only selective data is REMOTE. So your theory is all washed up just like you!

        • You need to get some help. There is something very wrong with you. You don’t need or deserve a break, you appear to have already snapped.

    • You already have had too many Breaks. Now get back to work cleaning your mom’s dishes.

    • And thanks for putting me at the top of the list. I take that as a compliment. That shows me that I was getting under your skin which is a good thing for people like you! 🙂

    • Darn, How do you think those of us you disparage, as inferior to your Ivory Tower perspective, should categorize your smug Posts? Inspired revelations from the “Chair”, or just another Politico groupie grandstanding against the CCO for a “treat” from your Masters?
I give you my “inferior view”,–I think you deserve a piece of their Limburger –“Good Boy”!

      • There are probably a lot of people in this city who would like to see the archive “lost”.

That would be an extremely bad idea.

  4. I do hope the CCO recovers from this blip.
With big city elections next year we need the CCO more than ever to balance what is reported by the other news outlets that live in the mayor’s pocket, reporting only what he scripts for them.
Would be ok with me if the editor just scrapped this page and started fresh on a new server. If the archive is lost, so be it. Let’s just move forward.

    • I second that! This community needs CCO, because we no longer have a credible newspaper.
