So if you do not agree with all statements that the editor has written do not come to this meeting. That’s more things then I have to agree to in a Microsoft end user agreement. Do not think I will make this meeting. I live downtown and it does not seem downtown residents are welcome. A big part of the downtown/south sides problems are because of the white flight in the 70s and 80s. You know you can run to the county but you can’t hide, the problems will follow.

    • If you are happy with the path of local government spending perhaps you should seek counseling .

      • Good spin, but that was not what I said, and you proved my point. If you do not agree you will be call names and told you are crazy. Not the way to get people to agree with you. Not the way problems are solved.

        • …If you have time for a 5+ year return, you should buy Downtown. Or hold if you own. The long term plan is working. Winnecke didn’t create that momentum, but he did realize it was important to keep it moving forward. Even Riecken did. This is an old horse though…The conversation about it is over too. (Unless you need to vent…which is what the IIT and some CCO posters are doing today.)

          • The sayings of Epsilon Becker over the years:

            1980: Downtown revitalization is working!
1990: OK, closing and re-opening Main Street several times is a surefire way to bring the downtown back!
2000: Our cunning plan to revitalize the downtown is going perfectly, now that we have created so many vacant properties!
2010: Mayor Weinzapfel’s downtown arena and hotel will have the downtown full by 2014 at the latest!

You are a wonderfully loyal drone, Epsilon Becker!

          • Did you notice that another store moved out of the downtown recently and out to the East Side? That store had been downtown for over 100 years I’m told IIRC.
More wasted money has been spent on trying to revise the downtown than necessary. Most of it was wasted by both parties on redoing main street over and over again with little or no results in growth. Downtown died in the 1970 and continues to flounder. Throwing money at main street is wasteful and foolish. All it does is give tax payers money to the mayor’s cronies.

    • “White flight” is a racist comment, unless you would had added the flight of another race that was pushed out from the area south of the old Division Street around that same time period. In general, I think the majority outside the area of those few hundred acres called Downtown are fed up subsidizing this area There is more to Evansville/Vanderburgh county then that small piece of tract of land that the current city leaders are dumping boat loads of dollars on! This morning’s C&P had a article of the city giving away $450,000 of “6 parcels of land” downtown to a developer who meets their needs(political payback)!

And yes, even though I live outside city limits as my ancestors have since the 1840’s, 15% of my property taxes are going to city government so I do have skin in what is spent inside city limits!

    • I to love other points of view. Went to both Bernies and trumps rally’s. I check MSNBC and FOX daily. But This bunch seems a little too pushy for me. Just my opinion already been told i am nuts.

      • I don’t know the bunch or who will be there. I’m not much for complaining with no action, but several of those issues do resonate with me. Saw the news today where Owensboro is taking their red ink serious. We need the same fortitude.

        • As it seems we are constantly compared to Owensboro. If our community only knew that level of taxation in KY. Owensboro has a city income tax of 1.33% then add 6% KY income tax and of course you have a tax on insurance premiums and their property taxes do not have caps. But, we have the tax and spenders here in River City as well. McGinn who has advocates increasing our income tax but doesn’t offer any suggestions to cut operational costs.

          • That Owensboro is looking at raising taxes caught my ear, but so did that they “say” they have cut as much as possible. A tax increase always says to me that the government wants to be a larger part of my life.

My opinion is that our highest tax should be paid to the state with no federal tax. Let each state contribute to the federal government. Doing so would stop the federal government from subverting the constitution through the threat of withholding funding. There are far to many regulations we are subjected to which did not come through the legislative process.

Have no idea what that has to do with Owensboro vs Evansville, but it was free. 🙂

          • IE: That’s an interesting thought. It’s the same yin/yang argument that Hamilton had with Jefferson – a strong central government nation versus a strong state-driven decentralized agrarian nation. Hamilton was a genius. Jefferson was too, but was a conflicted man who wanted the slaves to be free, but kept his slaves as property and concubines. (I’m having a bit of fun there at the end, sorry about that.)

          • Well if the women don’t find you handsome they should at least find you interesting. 🙂

      • Understanding both is the key to making an informed decision. Congratulations on your willingness to step outside of the echo chambers and think for yourself.

      • I didn’t go to either rally. I pretty well understand what both candidates represent. Bernie’s “democratic socialism” is opium for the millennial masses. Can’t say I blame them with the cost of education and the growing national debt, but they seem obvious to the actual Sander’s affect, or is it effect? (Who wrote this language?)

Trump is what he wants me to see, but he’s opaque. As I have said, I voted for him to end this primary and will again because I consider him about as dangerous as Teddy Roosevelt and don’t like the Hillary on the horizon. Hillary is fake, fake, fake. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=ellen+sienfield+faking+orgasims&&view=detail&mid=507435F0EC5522242033507435F0EC5522242033&FORM=VRDGAR and some real bad things could happen with her. I see Chief Justice Obama and economic Zar Bill. Yes, he presided over a great economy, but was dragged kicking and screaming to it.

But then, all politics are local.

          • IE: Teddy Roosevelt wanted to be President to dare mighty things. You are right, Trump tells you want you want to hear, things like “A chicken in every pot, I will just do it – bring the jobs back and make America great again.” He does that because he is bored, and he thinks it “would be cool to be President.” Is there something he wants to achieve? No. That’s why no-one can figure out what he’s going to do. Cause HE doesn’t know what he would do. He just wants to be President, “Cause it would be cool to be the President, yes, I’d like to say, ‘I was the President.'” Giving the keys to such a person is like handing the car keys to a madman. He doesn’t want to make deliveries or do work. He just wants to ride around in it for a while. Dangerous Indiana Enoch. VERY dangerous to do that.

          • The only danger is that we have effectively destroyed the checks and balances of power our founders created, especially during the last eight years. I still have not seen actual historical evidence of this dangerous Trump. I have seen a dangerous pattern with Clinton, and I have seen an ineffective pattern from the GOP. Maybe it’s time to live a little dangerously.

In all honesty, I wonder if we are not at a time in our existence like Rome before Caesar? I am more concerned about a Caesar than a Hitler.

          • IE: …then you can say, “But the trains ran on time.”
I read a book on Cicero about 6 months ago. I like the Caesar reference. Good stuff.

          • Your just repeating internet rumors. Is there any proof of her being a criminal? The guys doing the investigating would have already charged her if there was. She is probably the only person who might loose to Trump so they may not charge her even if they do find some proof.

          • I missed the part in MJ news where Trump actually did something illegal. I can’t imagine Trump having to deal with a criminal element when building in NY. What’s the city come to? Almost like Obama “having” to deal with Tony Rezko for a parcel on which to build his fence to keep the south side out.

But I do tip my hat to you in going with Johnson. I would have bet Becker that you would follow the pack to Hillary when she was coronated over Sanders. You’re full of surprises. Next thing you will become a moderate rather than a left wing radical. But then again, you are running a string of supporting losing politicians.

          • Trump may or may not have done something illegal, but it’s a good thing he will never be president because of the kind of people he pals around with.

          • Hmmm…well, that and he’s wildly unqualified, personally and professionally, for the Office.

          • Where is the proof of Hillarys illegal actions? If she did anything against the law with emails or Bengazi, where’s the charges?

          • Yes, where are they? And where are the Whitewater files and Emails? Wait, the Whitewater files were found in he r bedroom after the trial…nothing to see there. I believe she is actually that great of a speaker and wall street consultant to garner millions to hear her speak. And speculating on futures? No cow has chance against her financial savvy.

          • Your just repeating internet rumors. Is there any proof of her being a criminal? The guys doing the investigating would have already charged her if there was. She is probably the only person who might loose to Trump so they may not charge her even if they do find some proof.
Hope this is in the right place now. I wish we could edit or delete our own comments on here.

          • …..these talking points “Benghazi,” Hillary’s emails” (and I was stunned to see “Whitewater”) are just that……TALKING POINT NARRATIVES.
Crime? No, that’s not the political rhetoric standard. It’s the Judicial standard, of course. But Indiana Enoch knows these things 100%. He’s just being a baseless irritant and smiling while he does it. They do that everytime they bring up Huma and Hillary’s name to try to imply somehow they are lesbians….it’s just throwing ANYTHING on the hope it sticks on the wall (Lee Atwater did that.)
Alas…all this hope Hillary will be indicted (there still isn’t any crime, mind you….let me repeat that….no crime) is a bottom of the ninth inning swing for the fences cause “you’re about to get beat.”

          • I am smiling DB. That’s all one can do with liberal republicans. Say, maybe you should invest in some cattle futures with Hillary.

  2. Does anyone know what’s been going on with either the Vanderburgh County Redevelopment Commission or the Evansville Redevelopment Commission? I know they do meet. The city council’s appointed representatives – Stan Wheeler and Dave Clark – make no reports during televised city council meetings. Say what you want about Cheryl Musgrave, but she understood what the ERC was doing, researched the issues and kept the city council informed. The two current members are woefully inactive and seemingly ill-informed. But I guess that’s why they were appointed.

  3. IS IT TRUE Will Roger’s once said; “Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.”? (CCO)

    * * * * * * * * * * *

I do not think Will Rogers is responsible for this one, but it could not be truer:

“Poverty is like anything else, the more you pay for it, the more you can have of it.”

        • Well, your mama needs a sense of humor. But when Judas complained that the money wasted on pouring perfume on Jesus’ head could have went to helping the poor, Jesus said the poor will always be with us. Kind of sounds like money alone can’t end poverty. Just saying.

          • Deuteronomy 15:11 among numerous others. That’s actually the same verse you are referencing, it’s just most conservatives like yourself stop halfway through it.

          • Jesus is quoted in Deuteronomy? Interesting Reverend EB. I wonder why when Jesus walked the earth He didn’t feed all the hungry if eradicating poverty was his Mission?

          • Oops. Been a long time since I have read the good book. Plenty of Scripture to be had in new testament re: Jesus and the poor.

          • Oh and IE why would you dismiss god the father’s directions re: treatment of the poor? How Christian of you! After all Christians are quite good at picking and choosing which parts of the bible matter.

          • Why gee golly EB, I thought the liberal’s favorite verse was do not judge and here you are judging me. Guess that’s easier than explaining why Jesus didn’t eradicate poverty.

          • Comrade Ghost, even though our progressive movement is anti-Christian, we are incidentally taking care of the poor by paying for all of that public assistance, including your vast haul.

I also believe that you have mixed up your sources. You mean the Six Commandments in the Book of Doo-doo On Me, by the prophet Friedrich Engels. These state: 1. Thou shalt not work. 2. Thou shalt hate thy neighbors if they are law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. 3. Thou shalt covet thy neighbor’s significant other. 4. Thou shalt covet thy neighbor’s stuff. 5. Thou shalt sponge for sex days per week and on the seventh thou shalt sponge some more. 6. Thou shalt obey The Party in all matters.

  4. a day in the life of joe “the tea party member” republican–by john gray

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of coffee, he
takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joes employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

    • If the left would put as much effort into something constructive rather than constructing fiction they might do something great. But fiction is a good substitute from actual thinking. Doesn’t give you headaches caused firing brain cells.

    • Excellent Response. Joe should get down on his knees and pray that the Liberals get control of the Congress and the Presidency in this next election! 🙂

  5. IS IT TRUE that City-County Officials have discreetly increased our property tax assessment over the last several years which in turn have increased our property taxes? …could this be a good reason for you to attend the CORE sponsored “Community Roundtable” discussion of local issues to be held at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, in the meeting room at the North Park. (CCO)

    * * * * * * * * * * * * *

What they have increased, not so discretely, is your assessment. That affects the NAV Net Assessed Valuation for the county or the city, making it look like there is a bigger pie for them to carve up. The real culprit in an actual higher tax bill is the amount of spending that must be paid for. It is their spending, not the fact that your assessment is higher, that drives the issue. As long as the chamber controlled ERC exists, the spending will never be under control.

Abolish the Evansville Redevelopment Commission now, today!

    • Ultimately, those 9 elected members of the Evansville Common Council are responsible for approving all of the spending. So take your complaints to the people responsible.

    • I’m not a lawyer, but I believe that ERC can be abolished by the Mayor whenever he wants. He isn’t going to bite the hands that feed him and his fat war chest, and neither is Carol.

      • And neither did the previous two term democrat mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel, to whom we owe a great portion of the city’s debt, to say nothing of the rubber stamp city council that was aiding and abetting him for those 8 years.

  6. Third Party Candidate coming this week?
There are so many sane Republicans who realize Donald Trump is not an actual conservative, in order to keep alive what it actually means to be a conservative? They will run a third-party candidate to make sure Trump never occupies the White House.
They have a week to decide. (Filing deadlines)
“There are three possibilities: Senator Ben Sasse, age 44, of Nebraska; former Senator Tom Coburn, 68, of Oklahoma; and Mitt Romney, 69. Expect renewed buzz around this possibility over the next week, most see a 50-50 chance that one of the three will do it.”

  7. Uh oh. Trump willing to speak to Kim Jong Un. Remember the fit you conservatives threw when Obama said he was willing to speak to Iran, Castro, etc? Come on spin doctors, I’m waiting.

    • Whatever a rich white guy wants to do is fine with the righties. Trump can be trusted because he’s rich, white, and a “guy.” We won’t have to worry about the orange-haired clown doing it, though. He is not electable.

      • That’s two. Click your ruby red heels together one more time and say “never Trump.” But watch out for that wicked witch of the West Wing to appear. She’s not in Arkansas.

        • Pretty good Indiana E.
This dislike thing that men have about Hillary. It’s fascinating. Like blaming Hillary when Bill Clinton cheats. It’s some strange fabrication that it somehow is germane to Hillary’s being President….and MEN buy into this nonsense cause they…just…can’t…stand…smart….strong…women.
          Hillary is a symbol.
(“That new woman boss? I don’t like her. Nope. Just something about her. Just don’t. President? Give me a f’n break.”)
Talk about paid speeches. Fair game. Talk about Wall Street. Fair game. This Huma lesbian and Hillary’s fault Bill cheated? Folks…it’s pure bias cause she’s a woman.

          • Are you sure you’re not a liberal with that misogynistic defense? See if you can persuade Condoleezza Rice to run. She is what a smart…strong…woman looks like.

  8. How much money is the Sheriff making off this record number of inmates. The commissary and using the new phone system?
