IS IT TRUE June 28, 2012
IS IT TRUE that the summer break has only been going on for a month or so and the crime of killing or trying to kill each other is way off the charts by Evansville standards?…that this has never been a “murder a week†or even a “murder a month†kind of town but that the summer of 2012 is off to a “murder or attempted murder a week†start?…that the City County Observer would like to encourage the people who take life so cheaply as to murder others over passion or property to please snap out of it and stop the senseless violence?…this looks worse and makes us worse as a community than anything that any politician or group of politicians could ever do on a local level.
IS IT TRUE that today is widely expected to be the day that we learn about what the United States Supreme Court believes about the constitutionality of Obamacare?…that predicting what a court will do has always been a losing proposition and that either of the possibilities have some probability associated with them?…if it were not for the arrogance of power we would not be in the waiting on baited breath for today’s decision?…the memory of Nancy Pelosi parading around with an oversized gavel and dismissing statements like “SERIOUSLY†when asked point blank if Obamacare was constitutional?…that IF the Congress of the United States would have read the bill (some might call that VETTING) we as a country would not be on the precipice of seeing three years of work wasted by a judicial ruling?
IS IT TRUE that anyone with a lick of common sense and an understanding of the concept of freedom knew that a commercial mandate from the government would come under harsh constitutional scrutiny?…that on the other side of the coin, it also makes common sense for healthcare to be affordable and accessible for every person?…the question at hand is whether or not the government can FORCE THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES TO BUY ANYTHING FROM A PRIVATE BUSINESS?…the common sense of preserving self determination and freedom in this case should override the niceness of offering healthcare for all if a mandatory purchase provision is the method of funding?…this could have been done honestly if the Democrats in congress would have been honest enough to CALL A TAX A TAX as opposed to doing what they did which was to put the IRS in charge of collecting it and loudly asserting that THIS IS NOT A TAX?…that the actions of today are the culmination of a dysfunctional and dishonest federal government that treated the people of this country like idiots and the Constitution of the United States as a dish rag?…that this is one more case of not really getting what we voted for which was transparency, honesty, and good judgment?
IS IT TRUE that what we are sure of is that either the Obama Administration learned its VETTING process from the Weinzapfel Administration or the Weinzapfel Administration mimicked Obamacare when it came to VETTING?…it is time to stop the idiocy but we are truly concerned that no one in power knows how to do that?
IS IT TRUE that comparing the debt levels and the reasons for the debt of Stockton, CA that is on the verge of bankruptcy to Evansville does make one wonder if we are close behind?…the biggest killer of the Stockton budget and the driving force behind the bankruptcy has more to do with unfunded obligations for retirees than it does with debt to build public buildings?…that being the case Evansville may ratio out to look more like Stockton than it really is?
Well I guess Nancy was correct this time.
Not really and neither was the President. The mandate was struck down insofar as the commerce clause is concerned and the power of the feds to manipulate states by withholding money was too. Both were ruled unconstitutional.
What the court did and it was sort of genius was declare that the penalty for not buying healthcare to be a TAX. As I recall the President and Pelosi were both indignant in stating that it was not a tax. Wrong on both counts and now the court has corrected them.
The future will be interesting. It is clear that the court gave the President an F for constitutional knowledge while pulling a legal rabbit from a hat to avoid chaos and waste.
Why don’t read what Joe Wallace wrote above. He called the Tax is a Tax deal before the court announced it. CCO is right again
You are much more entertaining when you write about local affairs.
So Roberts said this thing is a tax.
So everybody has to pay up.
That’s going to be funny.
SCOTUS really split the difference this week, eh? Protecting the poor with one decision and the rich with another. Shouldn’t everyone be happy? Alas, I didn’t think so.
I am elated. In 2014 I can drop my $18,000 per year health plan and just pay the $2,000 tax. So can and so will the other 15 people in my office. We will be saving $256,000 between us.
Joe:
Wont your 2014 income preclude you from doing that? Wont you have to seek the best policy you can get from the “insurance exchange” at that point in time?
__
I am not sure of the details as they may be in 2014. The plan as written is full of loopholes and creates uncertainty. I like most will choose the best that I can get for the least that I have to pay for it. As a healthy person my best option may very well be to just pay the tax and keep the difference. Quite frankly if it is possible everyone should do that.
Her is part of the problem:
____
Which health care serÂvices are used most freÂquently by undocÂuÂmented immigrants?
Most of the health care serÂvices used by undocÂuÂmented immiÂgrants are for childÂbirth. A study of emerÂgency MedÂicÂaid expenÂdiÂtures for undocÂuÂmented and recent immiÂgrants in North CarÂolina between 2001 and 2004 found that between 82.2% and 86.4% of health care spendÂing was related to childÂbirth.

How do you stop this vicious cycle?
The 2011 estimate of illegal aliens in the United States was 11.2 million. On several occasions President Obama has talked about insuring the 30 million people who are currently uninsured. So over a third of that number are illegals in here having babies.
__
Press, please stop referring to the undocumented Obama supporters as illegal aliens. Barry, um Barak, doesn’t like that and he may send the IRS after you.

Servicing the debt on their downtown revitalization project is listed behind retirement obligations. In other words, if they had not spent $60-80 million on a new arena they might be able to meet their retirement obligations. Lesson to be learned?
Then there is the whole argument over the unionization of public employes, and its effect on costs. I believe we are beginning to see some taxpayer resistance in that area from the states.
The whole state of California has dug a hole for itself with their reckless spending and payday has arrived. Stockton is only the biggest city in the nation, to date, to file.
But we live in the Midwest. In Indiana where people value thrift and common sense. How on earth did Evansville ever get an administration like the previous one? It reminded me more of something you would see in California or Chicago or Detroit, where they thought the taxpayer well would never go dry.
Call me Chicken Little, I could not care less. I appears that the places listed above might be much better off today if they had been blessed with a few more high profile chicken littles in the past.
