IS IT TRUE? August 9, 2011 Special Evening Edition

IS IT TRUE that contrary to some postings today that the Vanderburgh County Democratic Party is paying market rate rent on a long term lease at one of the Kunkel Group’s properties?…that the Democratic Party pays rents of $1,266.50 every month and that this fee is a fair market rate for comparable properties in downtown Evansville?

IS IT TRUE that Evansville, Indiana my just be represented at the Little League World Series this year?…that the Golfmoor Team is two games away from the series and is the #1 seed in the Great Lakes Regional in Indianapolis?…that the next game against Hamilton, Ohio will be televised nationally at 2 PM local time on ESPN2?…that Evansville is a baseball town and that the City County Observer encourages all of our readers to tune in and give a shout out for our kids on the Golfmoor Team?…that those who can’t tune in can do a silent cheer from your work location?

IS IT TRUE that the federal reserve has pegged a date to keep interest rates at or near zero for the first time?…that Chairman Ben Bernanke today announced that interest rates would be remaining very low until at least mid 2013?…that we wonder if this is a politically motivated move to keep the regulating uncertainty of the power of the fed to tighten out of the election year thought process?…that we also wonder if the fed really has leading indicators that are indicating economic malaise for the next 24 months to justify keeping the cost of money essentially free for banks?…that many people were surprised that a third round of quantitative easing or QE3 was not announced today?…that QE is basically a cutesy term that means the fed will print more money to buy financial instruments with?…that one could easily conclude that after running the printing presses at full steam ahead for two years that the folks in Washington are finally beginning to fear the “inflation monster” that President Reagan put back in its cage back in the 1980’s?

IS IT TRUE that attorney extraordinaire Les Shively will be out of town on Thursday and has already taped his radio show for WGBF 1280 am that the City County Observer is a regular guest on?…that we encourage our readers to tune in and listen to Mr. Shively from 8 to 9 on Thursday and are looking forward to rejoining the program on August 18, 2011?…that getting the subjects that need the attention of the public to push forward good public policy is what the City County Observer is all about and that we take every chance to do so without fear of reprisal and without seeking the praise or favor of elected officials?

IS IT TRUE that Thomas Jefferson said “when the government fears the people there is liberty but when the people fear the government there is tyranny”?…that a free press that has no fear of the government is the backbone of a free and transparent society?…that it is time to put what Jefferson said into practice once again and instill a healthy fear of the people into our over confident elected officials?…that we are grateful for our readers who share that vision for Evansville?

  1. Well done on correcting the erroneous information concering the Democrats rent. I must say I have seen an inprovement in the manner in which the CCO corrects statements by its many well meaning but grossly misinformed posters.

  2. Since I cannot find a way to “contact” you guys, I just wanted to compliment you on the continued progress of your site. I like the extra column. I also am glad you dumped the WP log in feature, although I doubt many people even used it.

And, I also applaud you on what a good job you are doing covering what’s happening in the public interest in Evansville. Keep up the good work.

You don’t have to publish this; maybe you can make it easier for folks to send you a message. You should also consider a “news tips” type of box so that people can send you things like that too. If you already have those functions, I guess I am too blind to see them.

Finally, you may be interested to know that all your subscription related emails go straight into my GMail spam folder. You could probably fix this with a few DNS tricks including SPF, and a reverse IP look-up with your mail server. Just saying.

Take care. I’m enjoying the SC beach this month, so it’s nice to follow what’s going on up there.

    • We’ve been considering things very similar to your “news tips” idea. Some sort of “message the mole” of sorts is what we’ve been talking about.

As for the email spam filter – this is something we’ve tried to work around. We’re using a standard wordpress plugin for our emails. Hopefully you’ll only need to clear us as “not spam” once.

Thanks again for your kind words.

  3. I hope you do not mind, but since Rich brings up the timely issue of suggestions to your website, I hope you will allow this cross-post from another article

You should consider two things on your website. First is a public policy on the guidelines for posting to the CCO. There are thousands of articles online about this topic for news agencies, and I would consider it an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to work on this issue with you. The other would be the suggestion of having a “Suggest Removal” next to posts. I have had this argument with numerous people in the local media, and ESPECIALLY with C&P. The C&P method of “Suggest Removal” is antiquated, out-dated, and not effective. Their method does not allow the user to tell WHY they are “Suggest(ing) Removal” of a post. Just because a post pisses you off does not mean it should be removed. There needs to be a valid reason for removal of a post, and users should have the ability to tell you WHY they “Suggest Removal”.

One example (one of many I have) for posting on the website would be as follows:

As indicated, it is a suggestion based on what other leaders in the news industry are doing for their online commentary. Think of it as a “tool” to allow your users to better interact with you.

    • Banning the word “teabagger” would be a good start in raising the civility of the discourse. It is a gross insult that should be confined to venues such as MSNBC and Democratic Party web sites. Nobody with a functioning brain accesses those communications media, anyway. Those morons are entitled to their right to free speech as long as they keep their crap to themselves.

      • So they should ban the word “teabagger”, but not restrict the use of phrases such as “nobody with a functioning brain” and “moron”?

Seems a little hypocritical to me… i understand you dont like bad things being said about your party, but in 1 short paragraph you condemned their personal attacks, and responded with personal attacks of your own.

For what it’s worth, as a reader, I immediately discredit any posts that include such personal attacks, and rarely read the entire comment.

  4. I’d also remove the empty avatar icon placeholders since the site is not set up to use them.
