Indiana Becomes 30th Non-Smoking State: Sort of

2

The Indiana legislature today approved a smoking ban for the entire state. There are exemptions as expected for casinos but in a last day move the state senate forced an exemption for bars. Despite the exemption for bars places like restaurants, nursing homes, hotels, bowling alleys and shop-room floors. Other exemptions apply to cigar bars, hookah bars, fraternal organizations, and in home businesses that do not employ outsiders.

Smokefree advocates are mixed on passage expressing thanks for passing something but concern that it will be years before Indiana passes a strong smoking ban. Last year a similar effort became so full of exemptions that even the American Cancer Society opposed it granting exemptions to nearly any organization that anyone thought may have an issue with a ban.
