INDems to Hold Visibility Events Outside of Republicans’ Pretend Redistricting Sessions

INDIANAPOLIS – Today the Indiana Democratic Party will hold a visibility event ahead of the Indiana Republicans’ redistricting tour across Indiana. Democrats view this “tour” as a hollow public relations stunt geared to check a box and not address the concerns and problems Hoosiers voters want solved from their state government. Instead of solving today’s problems for Indiana, the Republican supermajority at the statehouse will use the redistricting process to rig the system against Hoosier voters for the next decade.

Mike Schmuhl: “it appears Indiana Republicans will rig the system against voters once again while also invoke a kind of performative politics that is more about power and control than solving today’s problems facing Hoosier families

Studies have proven Indiana’s current legislative maps are some of the most gerrymandered across the United States. In fact, Indiana’s maps have been found to be 95-percent worse than other states.

“Indiana and Hoosiers deserve free, fair, and competitive elections in their state and federal elections, not a system that is designed behind closed doors with little to no accountability. Unfortunately, it appears Indiana Republicans will rig the system against voters once again while also invoke a kind of performative politics that is more about power and control than solving today’s problems facing Hoosier families,” said Mike Schmuhl, Chairman of the Indiana Democratic Party. “If voters are tired of working more for less, having their children attend underfunded public schools, and seeing the state participate in unnecessary culture wars, then the responsibility falls on the Indiana Republican Party. It’s time they are held accountable for their partisanship.”

The facts don’t lie: The Indiana Republican Party’s “work more for less” economy, Indiana’s depleted public school system, and the unnecessary culture wars that have embarrassed the state nationally and harmed Indiana’s economy are all tied to the 2011 redistricting process a decade ago. Redistricting will shape the Hoosier State for a generation, and it’s why Hoosiers must hold the Indiana Republican Party accountable for rigging the system behind closed doors against the voters and communities they claim to care most about.
