The real important thing to point out on this page of the study is that the hotel they’re talking about building is the 240 room hotel in the third column. Now look at the subsidy it suggests… The suggested subsidy for a hotel of this size and type with all the other projects included is $13.5 million, NOT the requested $37.5 million.
Furthermore, notice the final projected cost of the hotel according to this study with all the other projects included… Surprise, surprise. It’s $37.5 million. Coincidence?
No coincidence or surprise at all. Neither is the mayor’s claim that it will not cost the taxpayers anything.
Pigeon is the poorest township in the county. All the TIF areas suck any increased property tax dollars away from the rest of the township forcing property taxes on residential and rental property to increase to just pay for maintenance of streets and utilities in the area.
There is no need for 70 apartments in the downtown area. As far as I know, there are still condominiums unsold on Main St. and property taxes unpaid on them. Who wants to live miles from the major shopping and entertainment centers of Evansville, much less in an apartment with ONE parking space, no garage, in a city of one car per person households, plus motorcycles, boats, trailers, etc.?
As long as they keep piling concrete and brick on top of the crumbling sewer system, they are creating an excellent scenario for an implosion. Everything will disappear into the stinking sinkhole of decaying sewers.
The mayors, past and present, have ignored and actively avoided fulfilling the EPA mandates for compliance with the CSO issue. Maybe they will budget for a monument to install after the downtown buries itself in the sewers that says, “Rest in Peace Downtown Evansville” and promote it as the unique tourist attraction Evansville needs.
