During the fast-paced legislative session, I believe it is important to dedicate time to recognizing our veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our country.
That’s why I am sponsoring Senate Concurrent Resolution 3, urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to place a memorial sign where the 38th parallel crosses Interstate 69 just north of Morgan Avenue in Evansville.
The 38th parallel is historically significant because it was the battle line between North and South Korea that American forces fought to hold during the Korean War. The Korean War cost our nation greatly, and claimed more than 33,000 American lives. It affected Hoosiers everywhere, including my family.
This resolution hits close to home, as my father was one of those veterans. He was a Seabee, fighting alongside other soldiers and building airstrips and roads for the American forces. My brothers also served in the U.S. Army and Navy. I have great respect and regard for all who have bravely served. Creating a tangible memorial in my district is something that will serve as a constant reminder of their sacrifices.
The placement of this memorial sign – which will read “Veterans of the Korean War Memorial-38th Parallel†– would be a lasting tribute viewed by thousands of citizens and those traveling through our community.
Korean War veterans fought fervently for this country, and deserve recognition. Many Hoosiers have bravely answered the call to serve our nation, and our state is incredibly grateful.
